Who did Pinder remind me of? There was a captain in last year's UC that looked exactly like him.
These people could get all the difficult answers but man they flopped all those geography questions - Savannah?
That head jerk by Hodge was so cute. And Barton looked lovely (especially his byebye at the end)
And poor Rachel Weisz - after all years of hard work in cinema she was still not recognised by these people

I did not recognise either of them. Not everyone goes to the cinema regularly or reads celebrity magazines.

I don't see the relevance of that comment. It all depends on which programmes you choose to watch. I didn't recognise them either, but then there are very few I would. I'm not proud of the fact, but then again I don't really care.

Add me to the 'me neither's. Have to say I'm always a bit baffled by questions like these. I know University Challenge makes an effort not to be too elitist, and I'm all for that, but celeb pics seems to me like going a bit too far down that route.
Another me neither here.
I have a pretty good answer rate on both Mastermind and UC - but I don't watch much telly, go to the cinema rarely, and don't read celebrity magazines - so asking me to identify an actress I may have seen once or twice in a long life is hit and miss.

They are more than "Celeb" pics though. we are not talking about the Kardashians (reality Tv non entities if you don't know) . Cinema is part of culture. Culture is part of having a broad knowledge. Lange and Weisz are not household names but they are known primarily for what they do as actors, not "who they are" for it's own sake.
Yes it can be hit and miss but there are four on the teams, so 4 times the likelihood someone knows them, however relatively obscure they are.

Same here. I've accidentally caught Weisz in a few 'Mummy' films with Brendan Frazer but that's all.
I knew her, but couldn't name her, I was shouting at the TV " she was in Tootsie " which was less than helpful in retrospect.
Sorry, but General Knowledge is knowledge of a wide range of stuff, the clue's in the name.

Film is part of the culture and those two pics are probably the 2 of the most famous, hardworking actresses who get to this stage in their careers because of their talent instead of anything else (Rachel Weisz even is a Cambridge graduate, know your alumna)
I guess we are okay to ridicule them just for once when the team fail to give the most obvious answers (Surprised they got Gillian btw)

No - but we were all watching Only Connect when you posted.
Was it planned that two 'mature' teams should play one another? Not including Paxo the average age was 45. (Not that there is anything inherently wrong in that, just an odd coincidence.) Ms. Banks was pretty phenomenal though.
I was particularly interested that Mary Ann Brailsford and Sir Dave Brailsford both had mentions in questions tonight.
Good one last night I thought - once the Open University got into their stride there was only going to be one winner.
They all answered at least one starter but Crawford was particularly good.

When the OU won back in 1999 he criticised the team quite strongly for being against the spirit of the competition. Apparently some of the team members had joined the OU simply to be eligible to go on University Challenge. Perhaps he still feels this is the case.
However, last night he seemed relatively less than sneery towards them, even complimenting them on the fact that they had done so well despite only meeting earlier that day.

There's a school of thought that says that older students have an unfair advantage because they're likely to have a wider knowledge of art, music, literature and so forth. However, they've only won twice in 45 series.

That's because we weren't included for a good many years despite the teams being extremely knowledgeable and far from "ringers". However we didn't devote the same effort into picking teams as certain other high prestige Universities. There is now a far more rigorous selection procedure involving tests, trials and practice matches against the very wonderful OU Staff and, this year, our equally wonderful Student Association Executive (who very nearly beat the final team).

Oh noes! It's "unfair" for one group of people to know more than another - in a quiz about deep general knowledge.
Next we'll be hearing that it's "unfair" that older people have more money that millenials - because they've had a lifetime to save.
