The additional services, delivered in conjunction with the BBC and consisting of a mixture of standard and high definition streams ...

Unfortunately quite a number of viewers will not be able to receive these strèams. IIRC around 25% of population cannot get COM 7/8. Although those with satellite should get extra streams.

Mixture of SD and HD ...so does that mean 8 or each?
Surly it has to as T2 must have space for quite a few HD channels? |

Since COM7 has currently 6 HD streams and 7 SD streams, COM8 can be a viewed as an exact mirror of COM7 in terms of bandwidth availability.
Therefore, there can be 4 or 5 HD streams and 4 or 3 SD streams from the BBC for the BBC Olympics services; ideally: 600 BBC RB0 (SD, 9pm to 7am) - BBCA 601 BBC RB1 (SD, 24 hours) - BBCA New streams all 24 hours: 602 BBC RB2 HD - COM8 603 BBC RB3 HD - COM8 604 BBC RB4 HD - COM8 605 BBC RB5 HD - COM8 606 BBC RB6 SD - COM8 607 BBC RB7 SD - COM8 608 BBC RB8 SD - COM8 609 BBC RB9 SD - COM8 Current placeholders on BBC B, for BBC RB2 and BBC RB3 removed and replaced with CBeebies HD 6am to 7pm and then simulcast BBC RB 0 in HD on BBC RB10 HD especially as the Rio Olympics coverage is running from the afternoon until the early hours of the morning UK time. 124 CBeebies HD - now on BBC B (6am to 7pm) 610 BBC RB10 HD - BBC B (7pm to 6am) 106 BBC Four HD - remains on COM7 but now 24 hours a day for the olympics coverage (1pm onwards) Returning to COM8, above shows 4 HD and 4 SD mix; meaning to mirror COM7 on COM8, another broadcaster can host one more HD channel and 2 more SD channnels alongside the BBC and QVC. This is however, all speculation but can be done based on current set up on COM7. |

It's interesting and good news, as maybe this will mean a that someone else could make a use for the space after the BBC have finished.
I wonder if it has to have so many HD channels on it ...hence why the BBC are doing this and maybe why Aquiva couldn't appear to use this space with other smaller channels. |

The figure in practice is more as not all the remaining 76% has DVB-T2 equipment or an aerial that covers the COM7/8 frequencies for their area. Without any change of home equipment/aerial the figure is more like 30% cannot get COM 7/8. |

Surly it has to as T2 must have space for quite a few HD channels? The white paper released a while back by Ofcom said they were hoping to fit 6 HD channels per DVB-T2 mux at AVC maturity (at the time there were 4). The fact they already squeeze in that many and a bunch of SD channels into COM7 is crazy. I'll be watching the inevitable satellite mirrors which'll probably all be HD and less bandwidth starved. |

At first I thought it's gotta be 4 HD and 4 SD, but actually anyone receiving COM8 can view HD channels so there's no point in doing that. I dunno why they will bother with a mix, why not just do 6 HD channels and be done with it?
On PSB1 we have RB 0 and 1 (DVB-T, SD) On PSB3 we have RB 2 and 3 (DVB-T2, SD) On COM8 we could have those four in HD, plus 1 more in HD and three more different ones in SD. They might limit to {4+QVC} HD to keep the quality up, and just go SD for the four extras. PSB3/COM8 simulcasting will be necessary because COM8 has lower coverage. Quote:

Unlike the SD muxes, they've managed to do it without any perceptible quality loss so far.

How wonderful to the select elite who can get COM 8 and two fingers up at those who can't.
Platform neutrality isn't even neutral on the same platform! |

I'm very pleased that it will make so many people happy,
although I won't be watching any of it. |

I can get COM7 but not COM8. Shame.
Ah well, I can probably stream it all through the BBC Sport app on my SmartTV. |

COM7 and COM8 are in effect short-term bonus muxes that were never part of the original DTT plans. The BBC is simply taking advantage of that bonus in order to provide an enhanced service (my guess is that all of those streams will be available online anyway, and might very well be on satellite).
It's an approach that I applaud. All part of the BBC sixth public purpose... If you want to have the extra services lobby your MP To close down com 7and 8 and sell the spectrum .... And mandate T2 AVC AAC |

What?? The spectrum being used by COM7 and COM8 is an integral part of the 700Mhz clearance plan.
The implementation of the plan will trigger dso2 and as I stated the imperative to go T2 AVC AAC etc .. which gives far more services than we have now available to 93% population .... not 70% with a bit extra and the 98+% will have all PSB emitted in HD only .... This was the purpose of the temporary muxes to get the level of suitable recievers up ... And as we know freeview has removed the freeview trademark license leaving only freeview HD/play etc for kit being sold now.... |

Yes, but there's no point in lobbying your MP as it's all a done deal.
