Eastenders - Gavin Sullivan

Didn't DTC once claim that Gavin would be the mother of all Eastenders villains and would give the likes of Johnny Allen a run for his money? What a complete letdown the character and the storyline has been. It could have had so much potential and Gavin could have been a classic villain if written well, but all he did was randomly pop up every few months, say a few cliche lines, then disappear again. The Halloween episode and last week's episodes with Kathy hiding and looking terrified as the door handle turned were some of the most cringeworthy scenes I've seen in a soap for many years. Eastenders used to do villains so well (Steve Owen, Johnny Allen, The Firm, Michael Moon ect.) what happened?! Did anyone out there actually enjoy the storyline?

I was quite excited about Gavin and Kathy, especially following the St Pancras episodes but the whole thing literally descended into badly written farce.

I think the problem with Gavin was that DTC hadn't really accounted for the fact that Paul Nicholas's work schedule prevented him from doing any long stints. Maybe he convinced himself that would work in the character's advantage; a villain who appeared sporadically and mysteriously and caused damage whenever he did, but really successful villains tend to be embedded in the show so we can see their mechanisms in action. Add to that the fact that Paul Nicholas, although a decent actor elsewhere, never seemed to connect with the character and it all fell incredibly flat. When you've got an actor who doesn't commit to a character, and writers who seem to be at a loss as to how to present him in a menacing and believable way, you've got a huge issue.

It's also telling that the more successful villains under DTC's tenure have all been a world away from the straight male gangster types that Gavin tried to emulate. Babe, Claudette and Bobby have all worked much better than the throwback villainy that Gavin represents, and that's because they aren't obvious or prescriptive.

Nope! Totally dire from start to finish, he was so underdeveloped and directionless.
