I think EE has a shocking track record for lesbian representation over the years. Before awful Tina was introduced I don't believe there were any prominent lesbian characters since Sonia's brief dalliance with Naomi way back in 2007, and that was another terrible storyline with paper thin representations of gay/bisexual women.

Once Natalie Cassidy goes on maternity leave, how about they use the opportunity to ditch Tina and Sonia permanently, as they're just not working, and create a really awesome and successful lesbian power couple who are actually interesting and exciting to watch? The new EP should look to Orange Is The New Black for ideas on how to do this; that show is mega successful and just proves that you can put LGBT women at the forefront of a drama and still appeal to audiences.

I'd personally like to see Belinda realising that her marriage to Neville was a sham because she's always secretly preferred to be with women. Carli Norris would be fabulous at playing a feisty and outgoing lesbian, and she's also hot so that's a huge bonus.

Thoughts?

in the 90's, there was Binnie and Della. Didn't last long, mind.

If you do a search for 'Binnie & Della' some youtube stuff will pop up.

They could make Sonia very briefly fabulous by having her stand on the Albert balcony in her final act and pronounce;

Dont cry for me Barmy Tina, the truth is I never loved you, throughout my dull days, my sad existence, I kept my bosoms, now keep your distance...

That without a doubt would be the best thing Sonia has ever done

I agree Elly that OiTNB could be used as inspiration, I think their black characters are really well portrayed and EE could do well to bring in young female black characters like Pousey and Taystee.

I do vaguely remember them but left them out as they were so long ago now. Four lesbian couples in the show's history is still really poor.

Sonia is more likely to serenade everyone with a trumpet solo, unfortunately.

To be fair, Kim is not all that dissimilar to Taystee, when the writing for her is good. But yes I'd love a character like Poussey, or Nicky who is my absolute favourite - a total car crash of a character but with a heart of gold and who isn't afraid to be very sexual. EE lesbians have always been sexless, I'd love to have one who isn't afraid to be seductive.

Loved Binnie and Della. I seem to remember there were a few other characters 'disgusted' by their relationship.

I'm all up for a brand new lesbian couple. A couple of smoking hot 19 year old ones will do nicely.

Lauren and Whitney would make the dullest lesbians ever. But Belinda and Roxy together would be brilliant.

The depiction of lesbians on TV in general is poor, in my opinion. They do rather get overlooked in favour of gay male couples.

I always thought they should have made Stacey and Ruby Allen a couple. They had terrific chemistry.

So true. That's why two of my favourite shows are OITNB and Orphan Black; both of those are brilliant at depicting lesbian characters. On British TV they're practically invisible.

Oh yes, I loved Cosima and Deplhine on OB. I've lost track of the show a bit but they were such a good, NORMAL and believable couple. Most lesbian interactions on screen are still so sensationalist or even reductive (girls making out; lez be friends etc).

Genius.

As for the OP I agree, I think the square should be invaded by a veritable army of young and spectacularly sexy females of the sapphic inclination.

Lesbians shouldn't be created for the male gaze so I don't think they need to be young. I'd actually rather see a couple of no-nonsense forty somethings, or maybe even older. Ritchie Scott and DCI Keeble would have been my lesbian dream couple before they sacrificed Keeble's awesomeness for the ridiculous Bobby storyline.

Axing Sonia and Tina Turnoff and replacing them with Samantha Fox would improve the lesbian situation greatly. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah touch me!

Waste of time .. there are already so many ridiculous storylines and they're all taking place in the microcosm that is just one small east London square. The series has got so silly in the past year or two and no longer reflects real life anywhere.

I don't think it would be ridiculous at all to have a professional lesbian couple living in east London. There are plenty about, particularly in larger and more cosmopolitan cities. I agree there have been some ridiculous storylines recently but there still needs to be a better range of characters IMO.

The problem is that unless they just decide to make a regular character who is straight into suddenly being a lesbian, they will have to bring in new characters that are already gay.......and then they'll be accused of simply box ticking.

And if there are characters that are gay, what happens then? Their character can't just be around their sexuality can it? So in that respect, it wouldn't matter what sexuality they were....

I mean, take Lee for example......he's just as interesting as a block of wood but he'd still be the same block of wood whether he was straight or gay......

What i'm getting at is, why should someones sexuality make them more interesting? I don't think it does.
It didn't do a lot for Sonia did it!

Clearly someone's sexuality doesn't make them interesting in and of itself, because as you say, we have Sonia and Tina, two of the worst characters on the show, identifying as lesbians (or maybe bisexual in Sonia's case.)

The show 'suddenly' brings in new characters every month or so. They can certainly bring in an exciting new lesbian character. You can call it box ticking, I just call it having a diverse range of characters who can bring different dynamics to the show.

I want decent lesbian characters. Female characters who don't fall into predictable affairs and relationships with the dull womanising male characters on the show, thereby repeating the same tired storylines we see again and again. Female characters who shamelessly love/fancy other female characters and who are brilliant to watch regardless of who they sleep with.

And if it didn't 'matter' whether a character was gay or straight, then why not make all characters bisexual and be done with it? Would you be happy to watch a show which had no straight characters?
