Eleventh Doctor Series 5 and 6 (Matt Smith)
Twelfth Doctor Series 9 (Peter Capaldi)

Thought I'd do this because Peter Capaldi is getting a new costume revamp.

Classic: Tom Baker's earlier costume. Definitely the most iconic Doctor Who costume of all time, scarf and hat and all, and, along with the beautiful curls and the maddening eyes, the whole appearance is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the Doctor.

Jon Pertwee's wardrobe definitely comes close though, he had some awesome clothing. There was even a purple coat he wore in Planet of the Daleks which was pretty snazzy, although I think the red suits him best.

Modern: Peter Capaldi's red coat design. Part of my love for his Doctor is how much he invokes the classic Doctors and this costume adds to that. I hope we see more of it in Series 10.

Classic

The one Tom Baker wears in City of Death.

A nice long coat but not too long.

Runner Up 8th Doctor's costume.

Capaldi's red jacket is nice but I'll have to go with the 10th Doctor's Brown suit and very long coat.

I prefer the Doctor to have a style rather than a costume.

Best style: probably the 1st Doctor, in terms of the clothes he wore suiting him.

For Capaldi I really liked his look in The Wizard's Apprentice. That kind of downbeat, back of the closet look suited his character a lot better than suited and booted style, especially the horrible red interior blazer.

BIB: I Always thought that horrible overcoat or whatever he wore with the red interior blazer thing was meh too. Preferred the casual hoodie look he had in Series 9 suited his mad look better IMO.

In terms of the classic series, it's a tie between Troughton and Pertwee for me. Their clothes just matched their Doctor's ever so well. They were looks, but not costume-like if you ask me. They just suited them perfectly.

For the new series, Matt's original tweed and bow-tie look is by far the best. It's clean and simple, but contrasts nicely to what his Doctor is. I didn't like the look he had in the second half of series 7 until the end. It was just too dark and glum. If if he had to change, I'd have preferred him to have the green jacket he wore ocassionally in series 6.

Chris' look was good too and David's was okay (preffered his blue suit out of the two), but I absolutely hate how Capaldi's Doctor looks. Yes, his more clean look doesn't quite suit him as such, but it's far better to the mangled, grab some clothes for the sake of it, look he had last year. It's just scruffy and so un-Doctor-like to me.

I don't like his red jacket either, doesn't suit him. It doesn't feel individual to him - its trying to hard to be Pertwee, like his clean look was if I'm honest. A smartened up version of his scruffy jumper with jacket/hoody etc might be better, but then I'm not keen on his Doctor full stop, so I doubt a new look is going to change things!

I love Tom Baker's outfits including the burgundy version he wore in his later episodes. I liked the idea that was an older version of the 4th Doctor, who had possibly travelled with Romana and K9 for a long time between seasons 17 and 18.

In new Who, I think the 10th Doctor's outfit for me is still the best - as others have said, it was a look rather than a costume. I thought the 9th and 11th Doctor clothes looked a little more like costumer, although I quite like the 12th Doctor's look.

I still have a soft spot for the 6th Doctor's clothes!

C20 Who - I'd go for Tom. Slightly preferred the longer coat and scarf combo to the Season 12 jacket, and it was cool that they changed the coat on a regular basis. Thought he looked particularly (strangely) stylish in stories like 'Androids of Tara' and 'Stones of Blood'.

C21 Who - Matt's initial clothes in Series 5. Vividly remember the first official photo being released whilst they were filming 'Time of Angels'/'Flesh and Stone' and then seeing the fan's photos from the filming of the beach scenes, which I think were from his first day on the job and, I don't know, I just had an immediate good feeling as it just looked 'right'. Booted, braces, bow tie...and thank god they didn't go with the 'Pirate' look!

4th Doctor season 12 style.
Matt Smith with cool bow tie.

Classic Who-I think Troughton's scruffy frock coat and bow tie etc suited him to the ground and really summed up his character. It blended in with his outward character, causing people to underestimate him and making him seem this scruffy, passive person when off course he wasn't.

I'm not saying this because he's my fave Doctor but I really like Davison's costume, it just seemed so suited to him as a younger Doctor and the sports feel to it added to this active Doctor who could run down corridors rather a lot!

New Who-Tennant's Costume in whatever guise was cool but think Smith's original costume worked best for me. It proved a neat contrast to Tennant's and it accentuated his zany character for me.

Tom Baker, season 17 outfit, loved it. I also preferred the boots he wore in his last season.

I always felt that from Peter Davison onward, the Doctor started wearing costumes rather than outfits.

Although Peter Capaldi's first costume is my favourite from the Modern era, David Tennant is my favourite 'New Who' Doctor.

Hmm a few thoughts. Firstly, Im thinking 'another costume revamp??'. That will be 3 costumes in 3 series and is only going to fuel the notion that they can't decide what they want Capaldi's doctor to be.

Secondly, Op, not to nitpick, but it's not really giving your opinion of your 'favourite doctor costume' when you then go on to name 6 of them.

Thirdly, to answer the question, for me, Tennant's mix of formal and casual just works so well as a costume, and I think what was so good about it was that it just seemed like an outfit where he could blend into most situations easily.


If someone were to ask this just based on the current doctor, i'd go for the hoodie look, because while the red lined jacket look is rather dashing, putting an older man in a formal looking outfit just seems to further make him look older, but the hoodie and t shirt look presents you with a character who is aesthetically a mix of young and old at the same time, sort of how Matt Smith was with his young face/older person outfit.
