Just curious really.

It happened when someone at work returned their phone and it was one of our earlier issues: an iPhone 4S. Being used to a Nexus 6P (phablet of the highest order) I was like "oh my goodness it's so tiny! .... It's actually kind of cute..."

Then I couldn't stop thinking "well they've brought out that new SE model" and "maybe I'll get a 4S off eBay to play with". In the end after a day when I was carrying shopping with one hand and trying (and failing) to operate the Nexus with the other, I did the sensible thing in the middle and got a 5S off eBay to play with.

I love it. It's so nice being able to operate it with one hand, and to pop it in your pocket and not feel it. Having used an iPhone 6 before my two Nexii I thought the 5S would be a painful drop in performance but I'd say it performs better than the Nexus 5X did (not difficult though, to be fair - sometimes the 5X was fine, sometimes a slug could outperform it).
Don't know if I really feel like ditching Android so soon and going back to the straitjacket that iOS can be, but if there are no 4 inch Android handsets in future I might be tempted for the next upgrade to get the SE2, or whatever they decide to call it.

But then, I pick up my 6P after using the 5S for a bit and am blown away by the size and feel like I just entered the TARDIS. So who knows.

One's brilliant value for money though - £130 for a second hand 5S is a much better buy than similar money for a newer Moto G or the like IMO.

Oh, and the 5S battery life is really bad (at least if youre into things like Pokemon Go) but on the other hand it charges remarkably quickly. Apparently the SE is much better that way.

I kept my 5s as a spare when I bought my 6 and still have it and use it on occasion.

I'm planning to go from my iPhone 6 Plus to the smaller iPhone 7 later this year.

I want to go back to a smaller phone from my Honor 7. It's just uncomfortable in the pocket. Will see what the iPhone 7 is like but probably go for the SE which is perfect for me really.

I've just got an iPhone SE as Ive found my Xperia Z5 to be too big for comfortable one handed use. I've kept it though and still use it in some circumstances, as it's a very good phone.

The 6s is a comfortable pocket phone, if the 7 has the same form factor it should be as well.

I had the opposite experience.

When I got my Galaxy Note 2 it was just before the trend for large phones started. As you can imagine, I initially got a bit of stick for carrying a 'tablet' with me, and there was the odd snigger when I took a call with it. But I loved having a 'proper' screen for browsing/apps etc.

When my Note 2 died I replaced it with a HTC One M8, which was only slightly smaller (5 inch screen rather than 5.5 inch) but I really noticed the difference. Even after a year of having the phone I still couldn't get used to something smaller so ended up buying a Nexus 6p to replace it. I'm much happier with the 5.7 inch screen.

Yeah, it's borderline for me. I don't really do a lot with the phone so the smaller the better. But I still want to check the weather, the bank, stock market, whatsap, text, sat nav etc.

I don't bother browsing on the phone, even on my Honor. Would rather use the iPad or better a proper PC. Looking to get a Surface 4 Pro shortly.

So my phone needs to be purely functional, robust and oh, have a good camera. SE sums that up for me as it has all the VoLTE, payment, fingerprint etc. It kind of reminds me of my 4S which in pre-4G days was a great little powerpack of a phone.

That's what I want again. But will look at the 7 before I buy, if I can wait.......

.
That's a good point, browsing on any phone is crap, even on phablets. The smallest I would usually browse on is my iPad Mini.

I disagree. It depends on the quality of the screen & your eyesight. Ever since introduction of the Retina screen on the iPhone 4 browsing has been do-able provided you are prepared to scroll around the page. I use my iPhone 6s Plus a lot for browsing mostly because it's with me all the time. My wife has a 6 Plus & rarely uses her iPad Mini 2 any more.

I think that's the thing - when I upgraded to bigger phones I was still frequently using the phone as a browser, and often on old desktop sites. Since then however I more frequently have an ultrabook or iPad Mini with me. The other thing is the increase in sites using responsive (mobile adaptable) design, making it less of an issue. Typing on them was terrible but this was before Google Keyboard (ironically) came to iOS.

The next upgrade will be interesting. Not ruling out the compromise 4.7-5in size. But I refuse to use non-Nexus Android phones as most manufacturers are like "want the new Nougat OS? Your S7 MIGHT get it mid 2018 if we feel like it, or you could always buy the new S8!"
Currently that means the 5X, which I loathed because it lagged like crazy whenever I was in a hurry to do something, and the 6P, which is better described as a tablone than a phablet. If Google are doing their own phone, the smaller model really needs to be half decent or I'll be strongly inclined to go back to iOS yet again. Right now while I have an iPhone 5S and Nexus 6P I'm making a list of pros and cons.

I've gone from a Note 4 to a Huawei P9 and I'm preferring the smaller screen. I thought I would miss the difference in size, but it's only been a good thing. I forgot how well a 5.2 inch phone fits in your pocket over a larger device!

I really notice the difference in going from my works Note 4 to my own Galaxy S5 so the S5 is going to be the smallest phone I ever have.

I can use it one handed, but how often do you not have a second hand free as even on the smaller screens it's easier to use one hand to hold the phone and one to touch the screen (I don't like to really use the phone whilst I'm walking along).

The Note 4 is ok for work as it fits into trouser pockets ok, but only an issue with jeans so would unlikely get something of that size for a personal phone.

I had a Galaxy S5 and had to get rid as I thought the size was rediculous for a phone. I've now got a iphone 5s which is much nicer to use and fits in the pocket nicely. I've also got an iPhone 4s and I prefer the size of that to the 5s. I would like the 5s or se to have the same 4inch screen but the body to be more 4s size.

I dunno. My missus does a lot of stuff on her iPhone 4 but I just can't be arsed. Would rather wait until I can get on the laptop. All that zooming in and out and different interfaces because it's mobile etc. Maybe I'm just old and grumpy. I can't be doing with it.

Even on the iPad (3), I struggle. Go on some forum on Mercury (hate Safari) or Chrome and you click to reply. Up comes the keyboard. Down it goes. Click again. Up comes the keyboard, down it goes. iPad in the bin, go to a proper computer.

I guess some people get on with a phone as a browser. I don't. I want a PC to do that at the moment. Surface 4 seems a good compromise between iPad and laptop so that's where I am heading. For a phone, I just want it to do the basics and if I do have to struggle with a smaller screen now and again to find some info, I'm happy to take that compromise.

I was using a 1st Gen Moto G (4.5in), and bought a 2015 Moto G, and had to send it back - just couldn't use it with one hand and it was too big in my pocket. I've since bought an Alcatel Idol 4.7in and its really a perfect phone size. Can use it one handed and feels comfortable. On the downside - the battery is fine only if you don't actually use the sodding thing. Once you start browsing and watching videos it shoots its load rapidly. If any android phone maker can come up with a decent phone at £150 or less with a battery that isn't a wimp, they should clean up.

I got the original galaxy note back in 2012 and I haven't looked back. Since then I've always used 5 inch plus phones. In fact when I switched from the original Note to the S4 and the note 3 to the S5 I really struggled with the smaller sized screen. It's all very good saying that smaller phones are easier to use in one hand but the screen is just too small to enjoy doing anything on it like web browsing, watching videos of looking at pictures. At the moment I'm using a iPhone 6S plus. I couldn't go any smaller than 5.5 inches. I love phablets

Yes, I don't like the big phones, horrible having it in your pocket.

Some of these phones are ridiculous.

I have found 5-5.5 Inches to be just fine, with my 3rd Gen G. Looking back at my First gen Moto G's screen, it seems so tiny

No problems with a Moto X Play in my pockets, i couldn't go back to less than 5 inch for the screen now and i am more than happy with the 5.5 inch screen on the MXP

I have an S7 Edge and that's about the largest I would want to go. Luckily I have big hands and using with one hand isn't an issue but I no longer own any jeans with pockets big enough for it!!

Personally I think the phablets are too large, and look stupid as phones, but that's just IMO.

lol

The S7 edge is right in the middle of phablet territory...

I also think that weight of the phone plays a part when one hand typing. Smaller screens do tend to be lighter but not always. Weight is also a sign of a bigger battery which usually means it lasts longer. i personally think anything over 150g feels heavy in both the hand and the pocket. An average screen phone size seems to be about 5" and unless you have really tiny hands you should easily be able to use with one hand.
To know what im saying take a look at the LG x cam thats just come out it has a 5.2" screen but only weighs 118g it feels as light as a feather compared to some even the ones with smaller screens. Not sure on battery life but if it gets you through the day i think thats all that matters to most people.
Im using a Galaxy s6 edge and think its a perfect ballance between screen size weight and battery life imo
But no i definatly wouldnt downgrade to anything smaller than 5" as to me the screen seems to get clumbsy pressing things you didnt mean to because everything is so tight and compact. its gets frustrating and is no fun at all, ok if you have small dainty fingers.

In my case, eyesight is not a problem. I may be older than my wife but I have far better eyesight. She needs specs, I don't (yet). I have no problem reading anything on any phone and I've used plenty. I just cannot be bothered and that is the long and short of it. If I have to zoom out or scroll left or right, I'm done. Will look on the PC later.

As I say, if I'm out somewhere with a 4.5" iPhone and need to look for a garage or a cafe or a shop or something, I'm happy to do that. If I'm at friends and need to check something, happy to do that. If I'm at home, no way am I browsing on anything under an iPad and even then, it's stupid behaviour drives me nuts quite often.

There are exceptions. The BBC News app on Android I have found quite good and Twitter also. But anything expansive I just want a nice big screen, a mouse and a keyboard.

I guess I'm just an old git.
