Another downer for Apple I think, the fact they are even interested in and contemplating doing this is bad enough let alone if they ever put it into practice, if you have an Apple device that suddenly tells you off for trying to film or take pictures of something it thinks you shouldn't and then goes so far as to strongarm you away from functions you could have paid as much as £700 then if you're sensible you might think it's high time you started using another type of device. It's anti consumer and what should be the response to that, your device tells you can't film and it's stopping you, do you comply or do you simply move over to something else, something better! There are myriad ways to record, and millions upon millions that wouldn't be disabled even if they were actually stupid enough to bring out a device with recording restrictions to pass. What exactly do you pay a company up to £700 for? To be told what you can and can't do with the functions you paid for, with Apple being as controlling as they are it already goes on, they control what apps IPhone users can even have without jailbreaking and don't even give a Windows Explorer mountable drive when connecting to PC so they make that awkward as well to transfer music/data/pictures whatever freely which Android devices/Windows Phone etc has no problem with. All this letting musicians actually try and stop the recording of gigs, is letting us be controlled and creating a negative hierarchy between the hallowed artists and you as a mere audience member, culture won't be sharable, it'll be proprietary.

The technology to block itself looks to be fairly crude, it will use infrared signals, meaning an infrared filter over the camera lens may well circumvent it, also circumventable by not buying a bloody future IPhone, I prefer that one! Hopefully Samsung, even Sony won't be in a hurry to copycat this sort of idea, as it is pretty disincentivising for anybody to buy any phone with this actually implemented in it, some are warning that it might end up being used by authorities at things like protests to stop filming there, thereby risking this unfriendly technology to become a blunt interest that will damage people power. But of course nobody would be daft enough to try and bring a new IPhone to such an event, as this would become pretty bad reputationally wise, the Xbox One tried to impose a bunch of anti customer restrictions and it didn't get them very far, I can only hope the same bad publicity could happen here.

Philosophically whose device actually is it, Apple & the corporations, or yours.

First, this has been covered in another thread.

Second, it's just a patent. It doesn't mean they are going to introduce this as a feature. There have been loads of crazy patents. One of my favourites was one that supposedly used the vibrate mechanism to ensure that your phone lands on its back if you drop it.

Great click-bait for tech websites, but a non-story in reality.

You are on of these permanent thread moaners who seem to read every apple based thread only to disregard the content as rubbish. Surely a simpler solution would be to avoid or better still not post.

As for the OP you would think the numerous instances of Apple controlling and robbing customers would encourage punters to move elsewhere. Unfortunately not though, it seems this company can do no wrong for many and do not even like these subjects raised.

Using a similar technique it should be possible to link it all to apple pay, if you want to take a photo/record a video then whoever owns / controls the area could introduce a charging scheme

Its all down to pros and cons. When I chose between Android or Apple, I spent about three weeks reading up what was what. For my use Android was clearly the one to choose, but for my sister, it was the other way around - Apple was the clear choice for her but for reasons that were not so important to me.

So if Apple do implement such a scheme you can be sure that some people will think it an excellent idea that fits in with their lifestyle and it may even sway some users from Android. Everyone has different priorities.

Future Ifs are irrelevent.

You really need to assess current can and can't does for IOS. And that is only for the ones that might apply to your current or future usage pattern/needs.

So people spend £700 on a phone, £50 to get in the gig - and spend most of the time watching the band on a tiny screen instead of looking at the stage. Meanwhile, normal folk can't see the band - all they can see is hundreds of phones held high up, blocking the view.

Some journo on TV a while ago said she managed to get a ticket for the 1st Kraftwerk gig in London for years (decades ?). Sadly, she never saw her fav band - all she saw was a sea of f*cking screens.

Anything that pisses off these 'I live my life thru a tiny screen' retards gets my vote.

I actually think what's even more sinister about this infrared tech blocking your iPhone recording gigs is that this technology could also be used to block recording of anything the powers that be don't want you to record. Could be an end to videos of people capturing incidents of Police/Military brutality that will no doubt please Dictators/dodgy governments of the world.

I understand as its an infrared signal Apples blocking tech will work on other smart phones too.
