You know, I spent the whole episode wondering why everyone was dressed as if they'd just stepped out of TopShop. What were the wardrobe department thinking? I know that 'futuristic' usually means clothes made out of tin foil, but chucking in a couple of extras with mohawks doesn't convince me that the episode is set 200,000 (?) years in the future. Just a superficial thing, but it definitely marred the episode. Quote:

So overall, I liked some bits of the episode, but I felt that it all fell flat on its face when viewed as a whole. When Adam stood on the observation deck, I couldn't help thinking of episode 2 in the series, and wondered if they needed to double up certain sets to cut costs. Or maybe it was just a 'clever' reference back to show the difference between the good-natured Rose and sneaky-natured Adam. Oh, and the 'boyfriend' thing puzzled me too

When did this happen? That doesn't make sense. And that bit at the end between Rose and Adam where he asks her if he can go with her,...it just seemed a bit weird and didn't make much sense. She then used the fact that he had fainted to jokingly say the 'relationship' was over. It was all at the teasing stage rather than anything substantial. Didn't the actor playing this Adam character say in some interview that he kissed Rose onscreen? That didn't happen. |

Very much like a classic episode of Dr Who.
lighter on special effects compared to previous outings and I think the story benefitted from it. As did the reduced Doctor/Rose 'chemistry' nonsense. The monster was, erm, a monster for a change. No 'monsters have feelings too' PC rubbish. They killed him off without a thought. Yeah! A great finish with the snapping fingers. Excellent. |

I really enjoyed it, even better than last weeks. I'm liking the character of Adam.

It may have been something undetermined but was I the only person to notice the start theme appeared to have evolved slightly, if anyone taped or video'ed it please go and have a look, I have just checked again, and the opening theme was quite different.

I actually liked the 80s theme... probably deliberate considering the story's gestation.
One line wiped out the whole Bad Wolf theory for me... about to start work so I'll expand later! |

I meant to say it could have just been sound distortion or interference on the opening theme, but somehow I doubt it!

I enjoyed tonights episode much more than last week. I'm not sure why. I thought the whole thing was very well done. Like Pegg & the bird from Black Books, and I like the way they are never afraid to make a joke.
Overall, I'm really enjoying this series. I think it's just the Rose / Dr chemistry. Nothing excelent, but VERY likeable. Rose makes me smile. Next week looks good too. I'm genuenly amazed how good the series has been so far (and I was never a Dr Who fan). |

80's
Why not 80's costumes? We've just gone through a 70's throwback, so would imagine 80's coming back several times in the future (heaven help us).
Just glad I still have my platforms from 1st time round in 70's...though a bit old now to wear them out. I can wear them in the closet..... Voted Very Good this week - as Dalek was the pinnacle and had to be excellent. Enjoyed this though. Only half way through the series and I'm still pinching myself saying "this is new Dr Who" on a Saturday night. Great innit? H

Next Time
A 'very good' episode, and miles better than the "Aliens of London" farce. Of course, it couldn't touch "Dalek"! Quote:

This series is far better than I could have hoped. |

I voted "Fair" because although it was only "good" I found myself straining to hear the dialogue over the background music

Oh dear. That wasn't very good at all, was it? Even telling myself that it wouldn't come close to "Dalek" at the start didn't help.
Buoyed by RTD's comments that "Simon Pegg makes the best bad guy ever", I was expecting something a lot better than this mush. I could imagine Pegg making a good baddie but the lines he had to work with didn't leave much room for that. And this episode did feature bad CGI (I really really haven't noticed this before) - the bit with the creature behind the doctor looked like I added the SFX, but that didn't matter because by then I had lost interest. The other problem was I didn't care a jot about the people on earth or on the space station. I actually thought, at 7.40pm, "Oh - it's almost finished. Has the story started yet?" Adam was quite interesting, the doctor came across as callous (we know that Adam returns in future episodes, I wonder if he'll be all bitter at the doctor now), Rose shone as usual and Tamsin Greig's nurse stole the show. Now if only she could have been The Editor! Still, it's sad to note that I havent seen anything better on telly this week, and, thanks to Tamsin's almost seduction of Adam, rescues this from "Poor" to "Fair". |

According to DW Confidential, RTD states that its not time for the master to come back yet.
Anyone any thoughts on the opening theme please? Put me out of my misery! |
