Nintendo to release the NES Mini !
Quote:
The Verge reports Nintendo will be re-releasing their classic games system, only much smaller, under the name NES: Classic Edition. While the original design remains intact, it has modern features like HDMI connection and Wii Remote capabilities. (It will also come with a controller that looks like the one you grew up with it – it just also will be smaller.)

Hopefully it will make its way over here. My 8 year old son adores retro Nintendo games. This would be an amazing Christmas gift for him.
NES is one of the few mainstream consoles I don't have in my collection. |

Here is an Amazon UK listing for the machine and it looks like it comes out the 11th November.
I wonder if you will be able to download new games to an SD card or similar and play those on it. https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Misc-/Nin...m-1124287.html https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-Cl...o+Classic+Mini |

I never had a NES but I've always wanted one. Ninty are on to a winner here, with the increased public interest in retro gaming as of late. Makes sense that they get in before a crowdfunder project does.
It's on my Christmas list .

Seem's like a bit of a waste of time to me. The majority of people that play retro games are playing them through emulator's now.

I doubt it. I think it would've been mentioned now if that was a feature.

I have too many consoles cluttering up my house. A complete Parodius /gradius collection would be nice for one. There was a psp one but I don't do handhelds. |

Perhaps It's aimed at people that don't have PCs, or don't have the knowledge for faffing around with Emus, or can't be bothered trawling for ROMs. Perhaps it's for people would rather support the companies that make the games rather than downloading illegal files. Perhaps is for people currently outside the Nintendo ecosystem that don't have Wii or Wii U to play VC games. Or perhaps it could just simply be a novelty gift for the gamer in someone's life. Quote:
Yeah... bit of a weird one, that... unless it's a case of "plug the USB cable into one of those hundreds of plugs you have at home for charging your mobile phone/tablet" type things...

Was excited about this but I hear the cartridge slot isn't real it's just a facade, so you're limited to the 30 built-in games. Seems like just another plug n' play console to me. Besides the Mega Drive one released a couple of years ago seems better as that can play cartridges as well as having loads of games built in.

Being able to play original carts may be a bonus, but the emulation in those things isn't great. The sound is terrible and it often slows down and glitches.

And you can buy an original NES plus games for about £50 on eBay.

All the ones I know aren't. At most they're using stuff like the RETRON but hardly any of them are limited to their PCs and ROMs/EMUs...
They don't just have to use PC's to play their retro games either. They have emulators for PS1, PS2, PSP, Nintendo DS, Sega Dreamcast, PS Vita, Xbox, Gamecube, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Android, Xbox 360, PS3.....they have so many options and the majority aren't going to suddenly change just because a little machine is being released with 30 games on it. There are so many ways to emulate and most people use one of these to play their games. |
