Chips and gravy sounds alright though - I'd try it once (we do have e.g. chips in a pitta with chilli sauce here, nice if you also get the salad) ”

'Chips and pitta' is in an Amy Winehouse song, 10 points if you know which one

Salad cream in mash is beautiful. My second favourite is mustard.

No! Must go back to the poor years, it really was cheap comfort food back then!

I've never thought about adding salad cream in mash and I love salad cream, might be trying that next time

Sounds horrible and I actually like salad cream. Salad cream and chips is nice.

I always put salad cream in my mash. Freshly made mash.

You know I'm no good - you run out to meet your chips and pitter rhymes with bitter)!

If I feel really lazy I'll buy the microwaveable chilled mash from Tesco or the Co-op. It's sloppy enough already without adding salad cream. Might try it with proper mash though, but into new potatoes at the moment, all they need is a big knob of butter and some parsley, gorgeous.

He is obsessed

I'm a butter, dash of milk and herbs man myself, and I don't generally go for salad cream full stop, but I'm intrigued now. My father used to love it liberally applied to chunks of finest cheddar.

Any insights most welcome ”

Anything added to instant mash potato would improve it - absolutely vile stuff!

It was instead of butter. It was instant mash and that is vile without some added flavour. Perhaps salad cream was all they had on their basic rations.

I prefer to keep the salad cream for salads...speaking of which, I wonder does he like his salad tossed too?!

I'm guessing it would just be like a bland potato salad but mashed to smithereens?

Tonight's 'mashgate' was about instant, but the other day he was insisting on salad cream in 'proper' mash

When we were kids we always had a big plated salad on Boxing day ( with left over turkey ) ... and Cadbury's Smash !

It was the smash and Heinz salad cream that made it bearable to me ... being your average salad-dodging nipper

I think they were talking about how to make instant mash more palatable. Can't say it appeals to me as I hate salad cream

Or the London things - disgusting jellied eels or pie and mash with liquor.

New potatoes and real butter. Yummy. A meal in itself.

I always use butter and a raw egg in mash and sometimes a little milk if the potatoes are a little dry.

Might try salad cream next time.
