I think for most if not all of them it wasn't about taking 5K from the prize fund but they thought there would be consequences i.e Automatic nomonation or evection.

True. Big Brother has pulled too many dirty tricks, so most HMs smelled a rat and didn't take the offer.

It ruined BB's fun to some extent because they were hoping there would be a succession of takers each having to throw somebody back to the poor side, causing far more friction as they saw their £5K taken away.

Yes I think they expected most to take it causing arguments.

I don't know why they take it to get alot of resentment and questioning from other housemates. It's not alot of money at the end of the day.

Thing was there was only ever going to be 2 allowed in the Rich club so there'd never have been much of a divide as such, folks would just have seen who was willing to accept the offer.

It was done to stir them up simple, it did exactly that, most of them were worried so they didn't take it, Alex, Jackson and Ryan showed their true colours to the others

I agree. They are all so busy to be seen as not playing a game that they played the game by not playing the game thinking that was the way to win.
I had to laugh at poor Ryan sitting on the grass with his head in his hands having lost both the money and any perceived moral high ground

BB never intended all of them to take it, they only had 'room' for two HMs leaving, ironically, the £70k that was the original prize back in the day

Precisely - BB I guess was hoping the Jackson/Ryan scenario would be played out with most of the HMs but they mostly opted not to take the money and be poor.

There was a hidden consequence...provided more than 2 people took the money (which is what happened). The consequence was that the 3rd and subsequent money-grabbers had to take the place of one of the previous money-grabbers who would then be denied their £5K.

In the event, it was a double whammy for Ryan...he was a money-grabber who ended up with no money.

I'm not so sure. Everyone knows by now that BB hosts a money grab with no consequences every year, and they'd just seen Jason do it too.

Indeed. The things being said about Jason after he took the money and evicted Lateysha, they were statements of envy that he had the money, not anger at him having taken it, but at they themselves not having it. There were lots of snide comments about the money and him now having it, more so than about him evicting Lateysha.

Not a lot of money? It takes me 3-4 months to earn £5000. I am a music therapist & don't earn a lot but I am sure there are many who earn a good deal less than me. £5000 isn't a lot of money compared to the £100K winner's fee, but I certainly think it is a lot of money!

Oh and I'm sure more would've taken the money but for fear of a trick like eviction. But also lots of them are consumed by the idea of how they are perceived on the outside world. It isn't that the necessarily think they'll win, but I think they think they'll be famous when they leave the house and looking greedy may effect their fame. I know they should know by now they won't be celebrities from this, but I think there are a fair few of them in there who believe they will be....

I've been so surprised how many times housemates have mentioned that kind of thing this series - about making money afterwards from the show. I would love somebody to ask them who won the last 3 civilian series and what they are doing now on the back of appearing on BB. They wouldn't know the answer. There is no post-BB money to be made barring an interview or two straight afterwards.
