Is it going to be a new story and new cast or a follow on?

I just watched this. Was I the only one with more sympathy for the monster than for Eleven?
Spoiler

I have to say I'm glad where Steve ended up.
Spoiler

Overall I thought this was OK, but not as great as some of the hype led me to believe. Not as good as Jessica Jones, for example (which had flaws of its own).

Also I found Jessica Jones to be pretty bad (imo) but each to their own.

finished this last night......wow! At first i wasn't sure as fantasy/alien/monster stuff is not my thing, but I was hooked straight away. Loved the whole 80's vibe, the kids I thought were incredible especially dustin, and the cute little connection eleven and mike has <3 but i didn't like nancy at all. Only downside I would say is the last episode the flickering lights were blinding and i found it hard to concentrate on what was happening.
Jimmy fallon did a hilarious sketch with the kids which you can find on youtube (Barb is back)

I did enjoy this and i'm glad it has been given another season (obviously it would) but it wasn't as good as what some people are claiming.

We just finished this last night - kept meaning to watch it from its release date as I loved the trailer but we kept putting it off. Wish we had watched it earlier now!

I thought it was very Twin Peaksy as well, especially at the end with the mirror. I kinda wish they would just leave it where it is, hate seeing shows turn into something different and drag on just because they are popular but hopefully it will be good.

It was only the mother, sheriff and kids that knew the true extent of everything that went on. Kids are quick to adapt and move on as they don't always fully understand what's going on around them, at least not to the extent of adults. The Sherriff seems a little hardy, so he'll be okay, and the mother, well, she seems to be a tad emotional anyway, but as long as she has her kids with her, she'll be okay. There's the three teenagers too, but they've seemingly managed to get over it.

It's only if the town had become overrun with creatures that they'd have to better explain what's going on. I don't think the show would work in another town, because everything that's going on is happening at that lab, and that's in this down. The story centres around El, so wherever she is, that'll be where the show is.

The only problem they're going to have moving forward is the kids; they'll grow up quick, especially if the show manages to last for 4-6 series.
BIB - I've read somewhere that they will simply set each season 1 year apart to account for the kids growing up.

I hate the word over rated and what it stands for. Just because something is popular people can't wait to say 'over rated'.

I enjoyed it for what it was, which was deliciously pastiche and predictable. Comparisons with ET are far more accurate than the comparisons I've seen with shows like Lost.

For my money, Daredevil and Narcos remain the best Netflix original shows that I've seen. Stranger Things was good though and I will definitely check out a second season.

Just finished this last night so am late to the party. While there are many things to like about it (especially the young cast), the flaws (Winona Ryder, the plot, the pacing, one dimensional characters, poor character motivation, really bad monster effects etc.) accumulate with each episode. I'm not sure a second season that follows directly on is wise considering the plot is one of the weakest things about it.

British actress Millie Bobby Brown is everywhere at the moment. Everyone is raving about her including Stephen Spielberg. She's on Lorraine now being interviewed. She's very mature for a 12 year old. She is delightful.

I finished watching this a couple of nights ago. I was enjoying watching this series so much that I didn't want it to end. The best series I've seen this year.

Such fantastic acting from the kids. Loved the 80's vibe and the nods to ET and the like.

Just hope the 2nd series maintains the quality of the first.

Just finished it, really enjoyable and a real affectionate homage to sci-fi/horror of the 80's.
With that in mind all that was missing was Martin Sheen, they need to get him as a crazed mayor next season.

The Tangerine Dream/John Carpenter mash-up style is heavenly.

In this case it's true. The show is a hit amongst nerds and 40 year old men because it references all those 80s classics that came before it that were actually innovative and fresh. This makes all the references and hits all the similar beats without bringing anything new to the table.

The characters are so stereotypical, the females being the worst: you have the suffering, divorced, unkempt mother who is all about her children and nothing else, the shallow teenage girl who has nothing else going on apart from her obsession with boys and 11, a magical victim, who only cares about looking pretty. Just because your show is set in the 80s doesn't mean we have to regress to such outdated perceptions of women. It will be interesting to see how they handle Ryder's character now that she has her son back or if they'll just cut her out because she's served her purpose.

It was only 8 episodes and since everyone was raving about it i kept thinking it would get better. It didn't. The show is beige.

Maybe, but all type of different people like it, not just ''nerdy and 40 year olds''. if you dislike it fair enough, not everyone will like the same thing but just because something is popular doesn't mean it's over rated.

For me the characters were the best thing about this show, especially 11 who played the part so well.

I'm not saying it's overrated because it's popular. It's not about how many people like it, it's about how much they like it. People talk about this show like it's the second coming but if it wasn't set in the 80s the show would be exposed for what it is - a generic Hallmark series.

You pretty much are, it's the only reason people can't wait to say the word 'overrated'.

So what it's set in the 80s? To me the show was good because of the characters and an interesting story, but yes I also liked the 80s vibe.

So now we seem to be up to the backlash against the backlash. Funny how things go. I also don't like the use of 'overrated' (especially as an adjective!)

Any way I enjoyed it but was perhaps a little bit disappointed. Really it was surprising that they managed to make something coherent given the number of other sources they seemed determined to reference (Carrie, It, Amityville Horror, Poltergeist etc, etc). One would have expected that kind of patchwork to cause major problems with the narrative but I thought the story worked pretty well. Certainly it was miles better than Cabin in the Woods which it resembled in many ways.

Performances and direction all seemed good to me although I thought Winona Ryder hammed it up better than Matthew Modine. I loved the gradual transformation of the house and the vibe with the kids was nicely developed. The missing element was obviously some originality but I suppose that raises the question of whether there is anything left to do in Horror. At least there were no zombies.

First series of Daredevil is still my favourite recent thing from Netflix but I am yet to try Narcos.
