I just don't want Paul to die.

I was talking to my mum about this storyline at the weekend. First of all this is a bit of an aside before I address your post but bear with me: Just out of interest I said to her, "Have you heard that Ben is supposed to die next week?" She had no idea that Ben was even rumoured to die, so I do think that for 'casual' EE viewers who watch it every day but don't really have the opportunity to read spoilers, it will be a genuine shock for them when they watch the episode, are told Ben dies, and then find out the truth that it's actually Paul.
Anyway, back on topic: we were then discussing how someone like Ben would die, and she said "I did think it was a bit weird how they were making so much of Ben showing public affection in the last episode, like something was about to happen. But surely it won't be a homophobic attack? They just don't happen in this country anymore." Those were her genuine words. A lot of people believe that because we live in a time when being gay is generally accepted in the media and on TV, that homophobic attacks simply don't happen anymore, even though there are plenty of statistics to show they do.
My gut feeling is that if it is a homophobic attack, the attackers won't have planned to kill Paul but complications with his diabetes cause him to die. This may also be how Ben's family realise it wasn't Ben who was killed, when the doctor starts talking to them about his diabetes and the penny drops for them.
It's going to be really hard to watch this week but I'm glad they're doing this storyline, if it does turn out to be a homophobic attack.
