We've all dreamed of giving up the office job, turning off the smartphone and re-locating to a remote location away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. But what would actually happen if we took the plunge? Well, we're just about to find out.

In March, Channel 4 put 23 members of the public in a wild, 600-acre area of the Scottish Highlands. They will remain there, with no access to the outside world, for a year.

A Channel 4 statement says: "With no prescribed infrastructure, the group will take in with them only what they can carry and the basics needed to kick start their experience, including the tools of their trade. What they do and how they do it is up to them.

"The series aims to challenge everything about modern living, raising questions about what we need to be happy, what we want from our communities and how we are influenced by society as a whole."

The experience will be filmed by cameramen embedded in the group, ensuring that there is no outside influence. The participants, all of whom are single, bar one, will have to build their own shelters and source their own food. To aid the process, they were provided with basic building tools, as well as some animals and basic cooking ingredients and equipment.

So who are the 23 people given this chance to start a society from scratch? Ranging in age from 24 to 55, many of the participants have a specialised skill, such as carpentry or fishing, to aid survival. There is also a doctor and a paramedic, as well as a chef.

Eden starts on Channel 4 on Monday July 18 at 9pm.
