CS: Max's "non reaction" to Kylie's death?

I've read a few comments complaining about Max's non reaction to David telling him Kylie had died and that the actor should be recast.

Is Max not very young? He probably wasn't able to properly process what David was telling him. I don't know what age he is but but he looks very young and probably couldn't fully grasp the enormity of what David was telling him. Max clearly knew there was something wrong and hugged David so I'm confused at a few people saying his reaction was a letdown

He's a young actor obviously they wouldn't want to put too much strain on the young actor who plays max as it can be hard.

I remember reading a interview with the actress who plays belle in and she was young and she didn't understand why the actors were crying and what was going on.

He did seem more upset about Carla killing his parachute man.

I saw those comments too and I dunno what ppl were expecting! Ffs Max is a kid! When i was a kid my granddad died and i didnt believe it. My reaction was kinda like Maxs. So as a kid Max probably couldn't take it in

But then again maybe Max likes to bottle his feelings up cos he doesn't like ppl seeing him upset. The way he was last night might have been how the actor (Harry McDermott) was told to act

But then again next week

Spoiler
Gail is worried that Max is clearly upset

So he must be grieving for Kylie

I'm 16 years old and I lost my grandad who I was extremely close to in March. My reaction to hearing he had passed away was quite similar to Max's, the state of not believing it's true at first or not understanding. Especially a kid of Max's age would be asking lots of questions of what had happened, they would be confused. Don't forget also that Max's dad recently died and he was found in Max's house! So death would be very strange to him at that point.

Just because someone doesn't burst out crying or start screaming and sobbing when hearing someone has died, it doesn't mean it isn't realistic. If anything this state of confusion is how most people react. Everyone reacts to grief differently, it's a very personal emotion with no right or wrong answer of how it should be shown.

I don't believe that any grief in any TV show can be described as 'unrealistic'. Again, when my grandad passed away- my dad (his son) was quiet for days on end, my mum (who was very close to him) cried constantly amd wept whilst I was just confused.

Don't forget that the actor playing Max is only young, he would barely understand death himself never mind portraying someone who's meant to. He did an excellent job in my opinion in such difficult scenes.

Whatever people may say about Max he is really the only likeable child character in the show. I hope they keep that up for a while. If this was Amy she'd probably be more interested in whether or not her pocket money will be raised than any actual concern over her parent's welfare.

Does anyone know what age Kylie is actually? Wika states she was born in August '87 but that would make her 29 and I thought she was the same as David which would be 24/25?

Yeah she's 29. She does look early 20s tho!

I think she looks way younger than David!

Edit: just remembered that Max is 10 and Kylie had him when she was 19 so yeah she must be 29

It's not just kids/teenagers who react in that way. I was an adult when my beloved grandfather died and when I was told he'd died I was in shock, totally stunned, didn't show any emotion. I stayed that way until his funeral a few days later. It was only when I watched his coffin being lowered into the ground that it hit me and then I was a wreck.

One of the worst child actors ever.

The kid's been playing Max along side Paula Lane as his on screen mum for almost 6 years, which would have undoubtedly fostered a bond between them. TPTB may have wanted a low key reaction, lest they be accused of exploiting the child's real feelings over her departure in the scene.

I thought his reaction was quite realistic. When my stepfather died 10 years ago, my stepbrother was only 9 at the time and didn't have any reaction at first, I remember him sitting in silence for a few seconds and then asking to put the telly on. It frustrated my mum at first. It didn't hit him until 2 days later.

Maybe he'd read about it in the papers two weeks ago.

He's not good , and I do wish they would cut his hair
Lily was more or less completely ignored, David didn't even look at her

To be honest Lily was probably a bit too young to have even been in on that conversation, might have been better for her to learn what happened later, in her own way of understanding it.

What sort of performance exactly did you want him to deliver? Some intense De Niro-esque "Method" rant?

I agree......but having said that the parent in question is Tracy......

Joking aside I like Max too & I think he's a decent little actor for his age!!

He needs to be recast he is awful.
I'm no fan of Simon but when he was that age he was much better and showed emotion.
