The Irish and the Italian are identical.”

In what respect.

Family values and the way we are brought up.

I have Irish friends and I am full-Sicilian, and we are completely the same.

Strict Catholics
Loud and overbearing
Cannot agree without raising our voices

It is very difficult growing up as a quiet person being Italian or Irish.

It's stereotyping Salv.

Sorry and I'm not having a pop but not all Irish are loud, overbearing shouters, nor are they strict catholics either.

Catholicism has fallen dramatically in Ireland over the past fifteen years, most of it due to the child sex abuse scandals. The church in Ireland is actually in crisis as there are no vocations into the priesthood or convents.

Many only set foot in church or christenings, deaths marriages...etc.

Perhaps the Irish travelling community bear more resemblance to your background and not Irish people as a nationality.

Of course it's stereotyping. Not everyone molds into a stereotype. But when I looked into Hughie's history and looked up some of his family, it is identical to mine. The traveling community certainly is. This is why I never would go on BB, I'd be disliked for being too loud and it will come across aggressive, even though I am far from that.

Well, tbh, I know hundreds and hundreds of Italians and Sicilians, and not one is quiet, so perhaps it's not a stereotype in Italy. We are naturally loud mouthed. I cannot think of a single person I know who is a quiet Italian. And the 5 friends that I know who are Irish, their families are exactly like mine. That's obviously not to say that all the Irish are loud.

My family definitely sounds like yours. I think the Irish and the Italians, even the ones who aren't religious, have that Catholic family dynamic where the male appears to be the boss from outside but is matriarchal behind closed doors. It was neatly poked fun at in Father Ted where the men have to drink tea on command.

Exactly this. My Mum wears the trousers in my house. But my Dad outside.
