I'm watching season 2 at the moment, and it was interesting seeing the conclusion to Age of Steel and Mickey's exit from the TARDIS.

It struck me that of all the companions to leave the Doctor since 2005, Mickey's departure seemed the most like a classic companion's: unexpectedly choosing to stay behind at the end of an adventure, never to see the Doctor again (or so it seemed).

For me, what added more of a classic feel to this one is that Mickey was being left behind somewhere that wasn't actually his home - a parallel Earth. It just had shades of many of the classic companion departures, like Victoria, Leela, Romana, Nyssa and Mel.
