Christ. Might not remember the theme, but I remember a lot of those characters being in it

Is that the steel band one? That was a one-off for somebody's wedding, Harry and Concepta Hewitt maybe?

EDIT: just seen it was Emily and Ernest. Didn't think they married as early as 1972.

It was a one off use after Emily and Ernie's wedding reception.

It sounds very Crossroads / Acorn Antiques-ish.

Slightly off topic, but in keeping with alternative endings, I've this vague recollection of seeing a Christmas episode on Granada Plus where there'd been a Christmas party (possibly the factory's). It was either from the 80's or 90's. Anyway, instead of the standard closing theme playing over the shot of the rooftop, they played the closing theme over a clip of someone doing the robot dance at the Christmas do. It was all rather odd to watch.

As others have said, this was a one-off theme. This was actually a very experimental episode of Coronation Street. As well as the easy listening/jazzy closing theme, the content of the episode itself was very different from anything viewers would expect from Corrie - either in 1972 or today. There were quite extensive scenes of Ray Langton and Vicki Bright in the park set to incidental music with lots of close up shots of flowers while the couple were discussing a fling they'd been having. Sadly the episode is no longer available on YouTube for me to share.

Why did they have a steel band arrangement to begin with? Had they had one in the episode?

I actually prefer this alternative arrangement - It's a bit more Manhattan than Salford, mind and those Light Programme strings don't really match the rest of it.
