Goodbye News at Ten? (again!)
Kevin Lygo keen to move ITV News Kevin Lygo has an ambition to push back ITV’s main nightly news bulletin to free up significant space in its schedule. http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/k...108925.article Very often on ITV you have soaps right until 9pm. Now, I'm not for one moment saying they shouldn't have soaps at all, but soaps dominate the channel totally. Of an evening to sit down and watch soap, after soap, after soap, is mind numbingly depressing. I stopped watching ITV simply because my partner was obsessed with soaps. It would be Home and Away, Neighbours, Hollyoaks, Emmerdale, EastEnders, Emmerdale again, Coronation Street when EastEnders wasn't on and then the soaps that clashed would be watched one after the after as one would be recorded! It actually made me angry. People would say to me "did you watch so and so?" I'd say "No. Don't get chance to watch anything as it's soaps only in my house!" Come 9pm, I was so fed up with the soaps, the TV either went off or I put BBC1 on to actually see something different! That's the reason ITV is struggling at 10pm. It has nothing at all to entice non soap fans and by the time you have a free hour at 9pm on ITV, most people have sat watching BBC1 and are settling down to their 9pm offering. BBC1 might have more factual programmes, but at least they're varied. There is something before and after soaps on BBC1 during the week. That is the key difference and that is why BBC1 does better than ITV. And now ITV are addressing the problem with introducing even more soap! |

Anchoring my own breakfast show for 11 years has been for me the stuff of boyhood dreams. It was the job I hoped to do as a young Belfast lad - and because of Sky News I got there! Forty five years plus on I have other dreams, and to achieve them I realise that unfortunately I need to step away from the daily studio commitment for a while. There is an addiction to a live breaking news studio environment. However, after more than 3,000 hours of programming it is a habit I have to suppress. Increasingly in life I have found myself in the fortunate position of having so much to do but little time to do it. This seems an opportune moment to change that. Going forward, I will now produce and present a number of documentary projects which I have been stalling for some time, as well as continuing my work with ITV and Channel 5. There is so much going on and I realised it was now or never... Sky's Head of News, John Ryley, has been very understanding and sympathetic of my decision. I would like to publicly thank him and the wider Sky family for all their support throughout my time at Osterley. John’s counsel and guidance in helping me to reach this decision has been invaluable. Finally, I cannot stress how hard it is saying goodbye to such a programme and the friends and colleagues who I have met over the years because of it - but nothing stays the same - nor should it. New studios mean a wonderful chance for new ideas and a new approach with new presenters. I hope they enjoy and respect the privilege of hosting Sunrise and waking up Britain and the world as much as I have. To those who have worked or woken up with me on Sky News over the years - thank you. I hope you appreciated that I tried to do it differently. |

This man Lygo really means business it seems. It always has been ridiculous having the bulletins at the same time and once the BBC occupied the slot it was the beginning of the end for ITV News there. It wont be easy for any 10.00 to 10.30 slot on ITV1 though, and it actually might work against 90 min dramas starting at 9.00.

If ITV reduced the amount of soaps and actually had programmes that attracted a much wider range of demographics, like they used to, then NAT would be perfectly fine where it is because viewers would already have been watching what was on previously.

Rebrand as ITV Nightly News and air it whenever is best for the schedule. Let the schedule run later on different nights - particularly Friday I'd say. Yes there will be News at When headlines but no one cares about ITV News at Ten, no matter how good it is. The Daily Mail's Weekend TV guide lists "BBC News at Ten" on BBC1 but just "News; Weather" on ITV at 10. I'd even be inclined to shorten it - is that allowed? Opens up lots of space for good shows later in the evening. Comedies at 10, 90 minute dramas from 9, 2 hour dramas from 9, a late-night drama at 10, films from 8.30 or 9. If Lygo also restores the Sunday soap block I'll be very happy with his scheduling work. With Polly Hill and the rest of his new team ITV could be facing a brighter future. |

I wonder if the 6th Corrie is being considered for one of the 10pm slot. If it was I would have it on a Monday and have
7pm Emmerdale ( hour ep) 8pm 30 min factual 8.30pm Corrie 9pm Drama 10pm Corrie With the other Corrie eps on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. But an Hour Emmerdale means there is no eps for it to air on Sunday as well. |

ITV could slot it in on a Tuesday at 8pm, taking advantage of a quite weak Holby
7pm Emmerdale 8pm Corrie 8.30pm 2 hour drama 10.30pm News On Tuesday on ITV I would have done this: 7.00pm Emmerdale 7.30 Tuesday Report: A new current affairs programme like World in Action 8.00 Blankety Blank: If they're going to bring it back, give it a prime slot. 8.30 Birds of a Feather or a new sitcom. 9.00 Drama 10.00 High Speed: A new comedy celebrity panel quiz about cars, football and anything else blokey! Instantly you have an appealing, varied schedule that most people would just sit and watch as you wait for the programme you want to see to start. |

Holby will just move to another day if ED or Corrie causes it to lose viewers. I wonder why ITV have this need to introduce more soap rather than come up with new programmes?

Alternatively, ITV could launch a nightly live chat show at 10pm. Channel 4 did this very well with Graham Norton, and more recently Channel 5 had a go too. ITV need something that can fill that 10pm slot and be an alternative to what is on BBC One. The nightly chat show works in America, but here in the UK, the pool of guests would be limited. We would possibly end up with soap stars, z -celebs and Ant and Dec. |

That is a good evening of varied programming. ITV maybe be a little more ambitious than we are expecting - well fingers crossed.

There is a point though that ITV is no longer there to provide a BBC type coverage of multiple genre. Their aim is to make money in a market which is not the cakewalk it used to be back in the day. Lygo now clearly wants to maximise the audience on ITV, and the schedule in recent years hasn't been clever enough with certain slots left to rot. If News has to be sacrificed to an extent as part of a process then so be it. |
