The figure is probably spun to be the peak consolidated audience, whilst also adding in iPlayer & repeat viewings.
You criticise certain members for having a hate campaign against X Factor/BGT, yet you have your own little campaign against Bake Off. Seems a little hypocritical to me.

ITV denies it's moving News at Ten – but is 'relaxed' about occasional switches
New director of television Kevin Lygo has no plans to permanently move bulletin, say sources

https://www.theguardian.com/media/20...ten-kevin-lygo
They've been relaxed about occasional switches for ages, have they not?

Indeed, it finds itself at 10:30pm this evening to make way for a 90 minute docudrama.

When a show is worshipped and beyond any criticism from anybody, someone needs to restore the balance.

Also, questioning the validity of a 3.5-4m timeshift isn't a "hate campaign". What show has ever timeshifted that amount without any extenuating circumstances?

It's clear this will be happening a lot more regularly, hence this likely planted article. Announce it via leak, downplay it officially, ease it in slowly.

Wouldn't be surprised if the branding is tweaked to move away from "at Ten" and become "ITV Late News" or "ITV Nightly News" to allow it to fit anywhere. While it'll be at 10pm more often than not (or between 10:02 and 10:05 as it currently is, to be specific) it'll be at 10.30pm and even 11pm more often.

Broadcast article talks about new entertainment format next year disrupting it. Perhaps I'm A Celebrity will run 9-10.30pm more often again. etc. Jack Dee's new sitcom could air at 10pm, perhaps.

I'm in favour of this move but we'll see what happens.

ITV did state they would be investing more money into IAC, but I can't remember whether that was last year or this year. I think it was last year, seeing as the tasks were so much better and the I think there weere more 90minute eps.

That statement sounds " exactly" what a few posters are about a certain ITV show XF, where if genuine people ( not me) start a thread in the XF forum, being honest saying the ratings will be down, certain posters jump straight in and will not allow criticism on thier show?

Sound familiar?

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2175702

Thread looks like it has been tided up by moderators.

XF by the way, adds, ITV ITV+1 catch up, consolidated, and if it can all ITV and ITV2 repeats. But that's fine by a few, but not fine on GBBO.

Looks like that IS the Bake Off rating for just the Wednesday showing of Bake Off.

From Broadcast.

Bake Off launch is most-watched show of 2016

The opening episode of The Great British Bake Off has become the most-watched show of the year after over 14m viewers watched Love Production’s behemoth.

The launch of the seventh series pulled in a live average of 10.5m (47.5%), before consolidated viewing added a further 3m viewers.

In total, an average of 13.6m people watched the launch – a share of 52%, according to data provided by overnights.tv with a peak of 14.3m in its closing moments.

This was well above the consolidated average of last season’s opener, which cooked up an audience of 11.6m (46.6%).

It sent it soaring to the top of 2016’s most-watched shows – ahead of an April episode of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent which entertained 12.5m.

GBBO also muscled past BBC1’s best programme of 2016 - the final of Euro 2016 between Portugal and France which drew a crowd of 12.3m to BBC1 in July.

The stellar performance will heighten the desire of rival broadcasters to lure the format. ITV and Channel 4 are understood to be keen to poach the show as crunch talks continue between the BBC and Love Productions.

Not every post I make has to be connected to the X Factor. We talk about other shows on here too, you know.
"You criticise my show so I criticise yours" is a tad childish, is it not?

Yeah but you never know.

But 3.7m out of 10m+ is not really that good is it!? Nadiya does seem to be everywhere though.
She's the new Dr Who companion, too, so I hear

I am getting fed up with the attention Nadiya is getting. Why the focus on her? No other Bake-Off winner received the OTT attention she got. It is making me wonder whether the BBC ordered her to be the winner just so they can have a new Asian presenter on their books. Cynical old git that I am!
How many hours of telly per week over, say, the last 6 months has she been involved with? Has she turned up on Newsnight, Panorama or are you just seeing a logical series of appearances to coincide with the new run of GBBO?

Perhaps, just perhaps, she has the right personality/story/demeanour/charisma to translate into telly presenting where the other winners did not (watched all of them and I struggle to remember any of the others). Square pegs don't fit into round holes no matter how hard you try.

Might've been mildly amusing if the actress concerned hadn't already been announced and a complete in-action clip aired. Never mind, eh....?

I don't think Nadiya's had overkill, I find her a likeable presenter who has a great skill to share with us. I thoroughly enjoyed her two programmes. Maybe the fact that she got a programme was because she is the most TV friendly and interesting of all the winners? How many other winners have a rich heritage in a foreign country to explore?

Ray, was wondering if you have any ratings from the week Diana died? Tribute programmes, news, funeral, etc?
Sunday 31 August 1997

This is what William Phillips wrote in Broadcast:
"Under 100,000 viewers saw ITN's first newsflash about the death of Diana, Princess of Wales at 01:57 on Sunday morning. By 11:00, 11.6m were watching for news, three times as many as usual. By 14:00, almost twice as many as usual were tuning in; by 16:00 there were more than 40% over the norm. As the bare facts sank in, followed by speculation and punditry on BBC1, viewers began to seek distraction. BBC1's all-Diana evening schedule produced its smallest share of primetime viewing since October. Despite boastful early estimates, live coverage after 18:00 did not produce sensational ratings. At 19:15, when Diana's body landed at RAF Northolt, the total live TV audience of 23.6m was 4.8m more than for routine programmes a year ago: under 1 in 10 extra Britons. ITV trounced the BBC in Sunday's peak and took a competitive slice of viewership during the day. The public's tendency to cling to Auntie during emergencies was undermined. Between breakfast and teatime ITN was often preferred to BBC1. From 15:00 till 15:45 it outrated BBC1 and BBC2 put together. None of this exactly endorses the BBC's current obsession with rolling news. However, BBC1's blanket smothered Sky News, whose most watched hour (for the body's return) gathered under 600,000."

I just can't believe it's added another 2m viewers- Where are they all coming from? It's just a behemoth and it doesn't seem to be slowing down in its YOY growth either. Could we get 15m for the final?

Bake Off has the advantage that the person kicked off the show is widely revealed the next morning in most papers and on TV. So - even though the show itself is not live - that drives live viewing to avoid being accidentally spoilered.

On the other hand DCI Banks has the issue of two part episodes 7 days apart that I bet (like with us) drives many people to record and watch together so the full story is viewed in one ad free 90 minutes like the episodes of such dramas used to be (and many still are). I don't think it helps retain an audience for live viewing at all this way. Silent Witness does it but at 24 hours between episodes it will have less effect than with DCI Banks.

Especially as viewers are getting more and more into on demand type watching where if there is a two part story you likely can - and will - watch both together in one 'binge' - this factor will I suspect get worse for ITV not better.

Conflicting ways of treating viewer expectations on Wednesday gives BBC the edge.

Nadiya is clearly like most winners of these talent series not really that popular. The only known talent show winner to have had much ratings success is Susan Boyle.
Ah, but SuBo didn't win though

Very interesting Lewie. Thank you.

Looks like the people watching X Factor on +1 is fairly constant at around 500,000. Getting the casual viewers in for the initial broadcast is the key. It's like that for all the reality shows. There needs to be initial interest then something happens to bring more in.

The subsequent hype that week led to the funeral figures no doubt. The timing for the first newsflash is wrong isn't it? I always read that ITN didn't break into coverage until gone 4am, way after BBC had. Unless ITN had a brief update.

But the difference here is that Daheley is an experienced journalist and is capable of doing the job without being a competition winner who happens to be Asian. Had that chap won Bake Off last year, I bet we wouldn't have seen him on telly since his victory.
Are Asian people not allowed to be on TV without it being box ticking?

Thanks Ray.

You can see how when ITV had a strong schedule people stuck around for news rather than turning over. Also interestingly ITN beat BBC News in a head to head. Now fast forward to 2016. It's not just the schedule, BBC News has turned itself around from being rather po-faced to being authoritative and approachable. This was happening when ITV moved main news later in the evening and cut its budget making the 6.30 bulletin the main one of the evening. It's come to a point that even if the schedule is awful around it, BBC News has a core audience that seek it out.

It's a disgrace how ITV treated ITN News as an afterthought. More concerned with asking them to brand as ITV News than fund and schedule it well. You reap what you sow.
