Thanks Ray.

You can see how when ITV had a strong schedule people stuck around for news rather than turning over. Also interestingly ITN beat BBC News in a head to head. Now fast forward to 2016. It's not just the schedule, BBC News has turned itself around from being rather po-faced to being authoritative and approachable. This was happening when ITV moved main news later in the evening and cut its budget making the 6.30 bulletin the main one of the evening. It's come to a point that even if the schedule is awful around it, BBC News has a core audience that seek it out.

It's a disgrace how ITV treated ITN News as an afterthought. More concerned with asking them to brand as ITV News than fund and schedule it well. You reap what you sow.
Could it also be the fact that over the years as more channels have arrived, and therefore commercial channels are hit harder than the ad-free BBC. Viewers seem more loyal to the BBC, most probably because its a British institution.

Looks like that IS the Bake Off rating for just the Wednesday showing of Bake Off.

From Broadcast.
Crazy, can't believe its time shifted 3 million and that's just the first show...

Or it could be that they prefer the programmes on the BBC. Either could be true, yet some will go on about the loyalty and default ad infinitum as if it's fact.

I think you might be right with Commercial Channels being hit harder but I think it is mainly due to the ad breaks. On the Beeb you watch a drama at the time and there's no breaks in the story/flow etc... Watching Victoria the other night was really hard due to the breaks and I wonder if we've got to a place of Netflix and on demand that Live Drama on Commercial channels is very difficult to launch as its a lot to ask someone to stick with something if its being interrupted every 10/15 minutes or so.

I don't think Nadiya's had overkill, I find her a likeable presenter who has a great skill to share with us. I thoroughly enjoyed her two programmes. Maybe the fact that she got a programme was because she is the most TV friendly and interesting of all the winners? How many other winners have a rich heritage in a foreign country to explore?
I think she's great, and so do a lot of people. It's not mandatory to watch the shows she does any more than it's mandatory to watch anything else.

Are Asian people not allowed to be on TV without it being box ticking?
Along with gay people, especially Clare Balding, and female comedians.

I wonder what these figures would convert to in the modern ratings 'economy'. 15m combined at a push? Although I suppose the Royal Wedding in 2011 did absurdly well, and that was on a weekday (albeit a bank holiday). Fascinating times ahead when the Queen dies for sure.

The BBC will run a feature legth trailer of Poldark between PC and SCD meaning SCD overuns. That way they can get many to see the Poldark trailer, plus denting TXF.

Not that TXF isn't weak enough.
Sorry, I was watching Antiques Roadshow again on sunday...didn't the XF do very well, then?

I think The Mole, Night Fever and Fort Boyard would be good choices to bring back for C5's 20th.

The latter would probably be quite expensive to bring back just as a one-off though.
Geoffrey Bayldon (the professor) is still going strong last time I checked!

As for The Mole, there's more chance of them bringing back 'Touch the Truck'.

Okay I managed to get the Bake Off rating for episode 1. It was 13.58m! It added 3.14m to the overnight rating of 10.44m! This is for Wednesday alone no omnibus repeat added to it!

I was also given some stats on it.

Total => 13.58m (52.0%)
4-15 => 1.05m (61.8%)
16-24 => 1.25m (65.9%)
=> record high
25-34 => 2.21m (66.0%)
35-44 => 1.96m (60.6%)
45-54 => 2.52m (58.7%)
55-64 => 1.96m (47.1%)
65+ => 2.63m (35.1%)

A show that appeals to all ages across the board pretty evenly - probably the secret to its success

Hmm, rather impressive. 2016 is the year of the timeshift it seems.
However, rounding 13.58 up to 14, as Broadcast did, was very questionable rounding.

It's that little kid at the start sneaking a crafty bite that keeps 'em all coming back. Too cute.

13.58m?! That is insane. And a monster time-shift.

It's also a touch ahead of the 2014 final which has a consolidated rating of 13.51m - making it the second most watched episode of Bake Off ever (just behind last years final rating of 15.05m).

I think it's going to grow throughout the series and we might see some 11m overnight ratings at this rate. Just when it looked like last year it has peaked, it's continuing to defy all expectations as it get bigger and bigger! It's astonishing really.

It can't get bigger than last year's final can it?

What do people think will happen with Strictly this year? Can it beat last year?

Well the opening episode should, considering Simon is politely moving XF to 8.15.
Alarms will be ringing if it is down.

Yeah, the Royal Wedding did 24 million as a peak figure for the ceremony at a similar time of day - so I don't think the climate around those sort of major events has changed too much.

The other thing worth bearing in mind is that these ratings are only for in-home viewing - I imagine the Royal Wedding (and other major events like the Olympic ceremonies and England matches) will have had lots more people watching on big screens, in communal places. etc. In reality, I wonder whether a lot of those events actually had as many or more viewers as Diana's funeral did - it's just that the latter, by its very nature, was more likely to be watched at home.

Never ceases to amaze me how popular Bake Off is with younger audiences. It makes a mockery of the endless efforts of TV types to attract younger viewers, that the most popular show with that demo is a gentle, nostalgic baking contest judged by an 81 year old grandmother!

I think based on that the final will be bigger. 16m? Surely that's possible now.

I think Strictly will be very similar to last year to be honest. The series average hasn't moved much over the last 3-years.

Made a note of Strictly averages last week. You're right, hasn't moved much at all in recent years. Very consistent.

2014 - 10.25m
2013 - 10.71m
2012 - 10.80m
2011 - 10.98m
2010 - 11.23m
2009 - 9.34m
2008 - 9.64m
2007 - 9.05m
2006 - 8.55m
2005 - 8.26m
2004 (2) - 8.61m
2004 (1) - 6.45m

Re people viewing in public places I read somewhere (probably on DS) that Sky add 15% to the audience for live football to accommodate people watching in pubs etc.
