Strictly Come Dancing : 9.26m (46.5%)

Go For It: 2.46m (12.2%) Inc +1
The X Factor: 8.28m (39.0%) Inc +1
Newzoids : 3.31m (16.7%) Inc +1
Carpenters Song: 2.15m (13.4%) Inc +1

Fantastic figures for both shows!

Strictly peaked at 10.1m.

That's almost X Factor's highest overnight since 2014. The final last year had 8.35m inc. +1.
It was 8.69m. But Strictly launch shows never average 9m in the overnights is what I should have said. Just can't do it. X Factor, BGT and I'm A Celebrity have but Strictly never can. It's a bit surprising considering how high the ratings can get during a series.

Good figure for both shows, just proves that both the BBC and ITV can both have successful evenings if they avoid clashes.

Where the heck did that come from for The X Factor?! Excellent for Strictly - first time it's finished above 9m for the launch; strange we were having that discussion last night about it never managing that and... voila.

Newzoids on one hand struggled with the lead in given but it's nearly back to it's series one launch figure - hopefully it'll hold on to it's audience this time.
SCD helped XF.

Note may not continue, many posts on XF forum it was the worst show seen.

SCD brilliant, 46.5% of viewers!

Seems SCD gave XF a leg up, handing some of its large audience to XF.

But even with, No competition on BBC1 XF didn't interest everyone with a far lower share of 39% inc +1.
Whilst Strictly left everyone agog with 100% sh... oh wait.

That XF rating ! For its worst episode so far as well! The producers will be kicking themselves they didn't start the series this weekend.

The weather was pretty dreadful all over the country. So people would've stayed in and watched tv.

Both shows did excellently, benefiting from pretty awful opposition.

It didn't help to that extent last year though you do have a point to an extent - I'm sure the crossover lead in didn't hurt it.

I'm surprised you lowered yourself to read The X Factor forum.

It did it! It actually did it!

BBC Strictly Press (@bbcstrictlyPR) tweeted at 9:36 a.m. on Sun, Sep 04, 2016:
9.3m tuned in for the @bbcstrictly launch show last night with a peak audience of 10.1m. The highest launch show ever for the series

No, Simon saved SCD by moving it to 8.15 in order to avoid a clash.

It would have been embarrassing for SCD to be down YOY considering the schedule.

The viewers clearly disagree it was 'it's worst episode so far' ('so far'? This series? Since 2004?)

Cowell is clearly taking the show in a more light-hearted direction in these early stages, after the seriousness of the Barlow years of the show

Strictly does gift it an audience really, although considering last week it is a great achievement to increase so much week on week. The Question is if they can hold on in SCDs absence for three weeks now, or if we'll go back to the 5 and 6ms. I didn't think it was that bad of a show, but equally not a huge amount to make lost viewers suddenly make it appointment to view again.

Are you on first name terms with Simon Cowell now?

Cowell didn't "save" SCD, what a ludicrous suggestion.

Wow. Great ratings for both talent shows there. Strictly up to its highest ever launch is really impressive. That show just keeps on going.

X Factor is particularly surprising, that's way up on last week and comfortably better than anything it did last year outside of the final (the highest it got last year was 7.9m and on the same night it got 7.5m). It's only 0.6m down on the same night in 2014 and the same as 2013. Very good result. Perhaps there's a bit of positive word of mouth in there and the timeshifts for last week could be quite big. I hope they didn't shoot themselves in the foot by doing something as divisive as chicken-gate (I found it hilarious but others won't have). Although BGT didn't take a knock last year after the 'hypnodog' episode so it should be fine. I'd expect tonight to be lower but still up nicely on last Sunday.

Outside of the big 2, ITV didn't have a great night. Newzoids did alright (although the lead-in was better than I expected). They'll probably take that number given how low it went before. The Carpenters thing didn't do much though, although it was oddly scheduled. Doesn't bode all that well for Ross next week though. The best that can be said for Go For It is that it isn't much lower than last week despite Strictly. It still did very poorly though and shouldn't return.

But they were already watching it..... Viewer retention will surely be the only way to judge wouldn't it ?

The X Factor will be down tonight with no crossover lead in and tougher competition from Antiques Roadshow. It'll also be down on last night next week due to opposition from Casualty and, for a brief period, Last Night of the Proms. If it can hold above 7m it's doing enough considering the state it's got itself in to be honest.

The ITV schedulers will be interested to hear about Cowell; most of the past clashes were actually engineered by ITV just as they engineer the clashes between Emmerdale and EE which damage both programmes.

Yep Simon saved a show that's been beating him since 2012

ITV's Birds of a Feather emerges from this week with an awful lot of credit, doesn't it? I was guilty of not giving it enough credit before - but I see it a new light now.

BBC One has thrown everything at this sitcom season and so far only AYBS has produced a better figure than Birds averaged for its most recent series, and even AYBS got nowhere near the 7.8m Birds managed for its return episode, albeit achieved in January when figures tend to be a little higher across the board.
Birds Of A Feather is in another league. Think of it what you will personally, but you can't deny that the love for it is very strong.

I guess Strictly's highest ever launch rating could be attributed to a lack of clash at the end of the show dragging down the constant increase it would have been getting up to then. It would have also attributed to The X Factor pulling iin the figure it did.

But saved?

Both broadcasters schedule unnecessarily to be honest - Strictly shouldn't need to clash with The X Factor and there's no reason why Emmerdale should clash with EastEnders.
