It's a problem, I agree, and a reflection of the exodus of people leaving the BBC, plus a lack of leadership all round. I also find it bizarre that a channel that can broadcast LTIH, CTM and DIP - different shows but very clearly aimed at mainstream audiences and successful - can then not apply the principle of popular drama to other commissions.
That has been a problem for several years now, but ITV's inability to get its act together for a long time meant that it wasn't so noticeable. But, inevitably, the pendulum was always going to swing back in ITV's favour at some point, and that's now happening. And with Piers Wenger apparently not joining until January 2017, I suspect things may deteriorate for BBC drama, rather than improve …
