I think the problem here is there either isn't the writers and sadly British TV dictates to cheaper reality shows or factual. I think the BBCs over-reliance on panel shows is due to the budget cuts.

We love Sitcom is like those soap quizzes that ITV do at Christmas that always get slagged off here. Except much much worse with very poor production values.
When it comes to hosting a quiz, Ben Miller is no Stephen Mulhern! |

A successful sitcom still is the holy grail on both sides of the Atlantic. Sitcoms like Seinfeld, Friends, Two and a Half Men are still playing in syndication even though they ended years ago and even current sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory are repeated regularly.
20 years ago, even on cable you'd have never got a British sitcom in primetime, but it's happening more and more in the US. People are realising there's a big wide world out there with lots to offer, which is only good for countries like ours. |

People say the likes of Holby City should be rested for a few weeks. But really, there's no point. It costs the same amount whether they make episodes or not. Actors and crew are already under contract and the studio space is owned by the BBC and is ready for filming immediately. Why bother stopping filming when you can keep turning out episodes? It wouldn't make sense. |

I think that's becoming less of a problem to achieve now. There's quite a few sitcoms which are co-productions - thinking mainly here of Catastrophe, Episodes and The Thick of It. They were produced with the partnership of Amazon, Showtime and Hulu. OK, they're not the main networks but they seem to have been received well abroad.

I would say drama is easier to sell internationally compared to comedy simply because humour doesn't translate everywhere. Slapstick does well hence why Mr Bean was such an international success. Panel shows are incredibly cheap to make. One set, a panel of regulars and some cheap guests. They are also very quick to film. Makes for cheap yet enjoyable entertainment.
I'm surprised given the success it's had in America that Whose Line it is Anyway? hasn't come back, it's had two successful run of the live shows in the West End and it's cheap to make. I think the creators have approached Channel 4 but they only want a one-off and not a series, maybe they should ask Channel 5 or Dave |

Those shows are great and critically acclaimed but they're not the broad, mainstream hits like a Miranda or a Mrs Brown's Boys.

Panel shows have been the staple of British television for decades and that's not going to change and many are very good like WILTY, Mock the Week, Room 101 etc I'm surprised given the success it's had in America that Whose Line it is Anyway? hasn't come back, it's had two successful run of the live shows in the West End and it's cheap to make. (SAT, 1800hrs) 2.59m I still think it would rate very strongly if it was saved and put against easier competition or a stronger lead in. But it is a very old show now admittedly, so the BBC are most likely happy to use it against strong competition and try out newer shows in easier slots. |

Was Aftersun that holiday rep drama starring Michelle Collins?
Life Begins ratings while decent ten years ago would be considered great today. I think that was the period when Caroline Quentin and Martin Clunes had golden handcuff deals with ITV which spawned William and Mary, Doc Martin, Blue Murder etc Speaking of Clunes, he's got a follow up to his Islands of Britain series called Islands of Australia which was made for Seven in Australia but I think ITV were involved so I imagine that air in the UK in 2017 or maybe even this year |

You come here and say that!
![]() ![]() I was thinking about your schedules yesterday and they do make sense. Still think genres being mixed up on a night rather than genres being restricted to nights can make a great schedule. This BBC1 schedule from Sunday 1st September 1985 is one of the best. Have fond memories of watching this one. Two sitcoms, drama and factual. (We'll gloss over the fact one of the sitcoms was resurrected as it buggers up my argument about bringing back old shows! ) A really nice mix. These figures posted by Ray Tings show how well it worked.19:15 - Open All Hours: 15.69m 19:45 - Howards' Way: 9.77m 20:35 - Whicker's World: Living with Uncle Sam: 11.58m 21:30 - In Sickness and In Health: 15.58m 22:00 - News: 11.45m ITV had a great Sunday for a few years with You've Been Framed followed by Darling Buds. Forget what came after that but it was blockbuster stuff. Some of the language is quite jarring now, though. I know it was always said the racist words were there to make Alf look like an idiot, and how the other characters would show him up as an idiot, but watching the DVDs of all six series recently, I've noticed all the characters getting some throwaway racist lines at some point, so I can't help thinking some of the words were just thrown in to get cheap laughs. Warren Mitchell was amazing in it. He put so much energy into every scene. Didn't they repeat that first episode of Howards' Way later in the week? |

True, but even the big dramas like Downton don't get shown on the main networks - they're on PBS. I don't know why American networks won't show more foreign stuff, but there you go. I don't think there's been a monster hit sitcom on both sides of the atlantic other than Friends and Frasier. Seinfeld was very niche for years in the US and never really got a huge fanbase here, although people seem to be finding out about it with each passing year.
Only 5 has shown the likes of NCiS and CSI. Sky Hoover most up. It's a shame because American TV has stories and concepts that most British viewers do not experience. Sherlock uses funky ideas. You can't imagine itv of BBC commissioning Timeless like NBC has. Even if itv did they'd probably screen it at 7pm on a Sunday evening.... |

It was a awful, non of the panellists knew anything about sitcom. Also some of the questions were completely irrelevant like the maths round. Ben Miller was also giving the answers as like I said non of them had a clue.

ITV and BBC1 do not show American shows anymore. Even 4 doesn't anchor a Friday night around Big Bang like it did Friends, Frasier, Cheers, Roseanne, Golden Girls, Cosby and Will and Grace.
