Strong night for Channel 5 last night to say the least.

England flying meant Cricket on 5 pulled in a figure twice the slot average at 7pm with 940,000 (5.4%).

Later at 9pm a Can't Pay? We'll Take it Away! special pulled in an impressive 1.66m (8.4%) and Big Brother rounded off the night with 1.20m (7.6%).

Phenomenal for Can't Pay! Shame BB couldn't have capsized on it, but BB still got one of it's highest 10pm ratings there excl +1. But yes, what a fantastic rating for Can't Pay. Well, looks like Eden won't be a big hit then now it's beaten by C5. Good night for BBC2 .

Having just seen a trail for Impractical Jokers UK I'm somewhat confused as it seems to be a copy of the exact same stunts in the BBC3 show except with a bunch of absolute nobodies. What's the point? Couldn't they at least have dreamed up new dares?? And didn't the US version flop resoundingly on Five so why mount a UK version at all?

Where did that Can't Pay, We'll Take It Away rating come from? I'm impressed!

I hope the cheap ratings were worth it. Here's what the reviewers are saying about this latest barrel scraping trash from Four:

"Desperately sad, depressing television. God knows Channel Four has broadcast some trash over the years, but this was a new low, degrading everyone involved while exposing how cynical Britain's lovelife has become." Christopher Stevens, The Daily Mail

"The dating show for those who find Tinder too intellectual. Isn’t it awful the way things such as personalities and, I dunno, clothes get in the way when you’re trying to find a partner, asked nobody ever apart from whichever commissioner somehow got this made? Let’s all go back to basics, strip ourselves of all the ephemera we hide behind and show some penises on the telly." Esther Addley, The Guardian

"Naked Attraction essentially reduced human attraction to a kind of game show meat market. And it would be naïve to think that anyone at Channel 4 commissioned this show – or any of other nudity-flaunting formats on Channel 4 this summer – for the sake of breaking down barriers." Gerard O'Donovan, The Telegraph

The UK version was already commissioned and made by the time the US version went out. It's unlikely to do well IMO but Comedy Central will get some use out of it on repeat I'd imagine, so I'm sure they'll salvage something from it even if they don't find a new hit for C5.

It always does well but I'm also impressed it did that well last night for a special rather randomly scheduled away from the main run which finished in May. I expected it would come in below average if anything.

I could see them commissioning a lot more episodes next year. It's just so reliable, that why wouldn't you?

What a bizarre cart-before-horse decision.

Ahem.....Two words - Big Brother. Another one - Benefits.

You're as bad as I apparently am if you're defending Naked Attraction by vainly attempting to change the subject.

Four is facing a very uncertain time at the moment so it's certainly topical. And as someone who grew up watching Four more than any channel, I find myself caring less and less it it does end up in commercial hands. Because it's lost the plot quite frankly, and I'm not sure there's much left to spoil for the likes of BT or whatever American company may come in. Indeed, I rather think ownership and strategy which truly reflected the current values of Channel 4: ratings at all costs, might actually help them to progress. After all, the more discerning viewer has long found something else to watch. And we'll never get the C4 of old back, not now.

I find it a little absurd that someone who defends Five so vociferously can take the moral high ground in regards to tat on C4.

After all, the more discerning viewer has long found something else to watch anyway.
C4 has never been shy of exploiting nudity or sex going right back to the red(?) triangle screenings so it could be argued this latest show is just a continuation of that kind of programming.

There's more of value and interest on C4 and it's associated channels every week for the discerning viewer than there is on the Viacom free-to-air channels. I don't disagree that they're a shadow of what they started out as but they still manage to put more on-screen that interests a middle-aged, average person like me than Five does.

But I don't. I've said many many times which you've not taken on board for whatever reason that I think Five must cut the Benefits shows, which they are doing. I would like to see Big Brother cancelled also, but ratings picked up slightly towards the end of this run so I probably won't get my wish.

Ultimately though I don't think their programming is anywhere near as cynical as C4's has been just recently. And a real effort is being made, in bringing in new comedy next week for example, to diversify and improve the schedule.

Well, I struggle to find these great programmes I must admit. Roughly two-thirds of C4 in peak is female-skewing lifestyle. At least half of the rest is ratings chasing garbage, and then a small percentage of what is left might be of value, i.e. a worthwhile documentary, but I'll probably miss it in the schedule amongst all the dross. And let's face it, if they could get away with screening the likes of Gogglebox all year round they would do.

As for the digital channels, I think I'm getting too old for E4 and its over reliance on Big Bang Theory is just ludicrous now, really. More4 is probably the biggest disappointment going, yet more lifestyle programmes on loop and very few decent documentaries. Film4 is probably the best of a bad bunch here, making good use of the film rights they have, but I'm as likely to find a film I want to watch elsewhere.

Anyway, I think we can both agree that it's important now that the government makes its intentions clear soon one way or another, as the current uncertainty is hardly going to lead to any improvement if the last few months are anything to go by.

I must be imagining these new Benefits shows and the like that keep appearing every week. More BB then? And people thought C4 had run it into the ground!

Ultimately though I don't think their programming is anywhere near as cynical as C4's has been just recently. And a real effort is being made, in bringing in new comedy next week for example, to diversify and improve the schedule.
Is that The Office rip-off that they've been trailing? The one set in a border-control office? 15 years too late.

People raving about the Ollie Reed doco from Sunday so perhaps you should train a keener eye on their schedule.

Bit odd that you single More4 out for criticism when they've initiated foreign drama as a staple. Remind me again, how many subtitled films/dramas do Five air? Have they EVER aired anything subbed?

Just as a rough illustration I went through this week's listings and found that C4 & Co have 17 programmes that interest me this week, whereas C5 & Co have six (and five of those are The Wright Stuff). In the interests of fairness I would've included Powers in that list but it finished last Friday.

I wonder if they might see it as a replacement for Home Fires in the spring, pairing it up with The Durrells?

I would keep it in Summer because ITV often don't show drama during this time (unless they are flops), and its nice to have drama break up overload of factual.

It could definitely work, but I think I'd keep it in the Summer as well, it's not often you get a hit new drama in July. Between it and Long Lost Family (and potentially The Investigator if it can hold 3m) the lights are kept on during a pretty dead period for ITV.

I'd probably pair The Durrells up with The Good Karma Hospital next Spring. Tonally it'd be a good fit as Good Karma Hospital also sounds like a lighter drama set in a sunnier location. Unless that is also seen as an 8pm drama it could be a good pairing.
