If a show which struggles to hit 4m can weaken The X Factor then it's not exactly a great return. If weather hit it the share would have stayed at the same level but that declined by nearly 3%.

In the great scheme of things it's a reasonable figure. I just think it should and could have held on to more of it's audience.

Well I almost nailed it. Casualty is a bit low but I didn't account for the Paralympics.

TXF peaking well over 8m shows that people still are happy to watch it. Bodes well for its 7 day rating.
Go For It seems to have a loyal 2.5m viewers who'll watch it even against SCD. But it can't build on it so it's a tricky call for itv. Could it grow in a second season, maybe on another day? Is 2.6m a good effort versus SCD?

Newszoids and Ross are on at least 30 minutes too early and I doubt they'll ratings will drop when TXF is finishing closer to 10pm. They were good shares at those times.

A little surprised that the Proms didn't do better. The Proms crowd looked really patriotic and were full of stars last night.

For someone who doesn't like the show, you don't half spend a lot of precious time reading about it.

Whilst The X Factor's rating is disappointing week-on-week, whilst it is getting nearly triple the rest of ITV's line-up then it is secure for the foreseeable future.

Last night is a combination of facing Casualty instead of the Lottery, and the Paralympics which would have shaved viewers off both ITV and BBC One.

Last night should have been a good night for sport. Lots of live soccer and boxing on. Always worth remembering that no programme gets more than 20% of people to watch it.
Only 20m people were watching TV last night. The other 43m were doing ...

The Paralympics definitely took viewers from the main channels when you see how BBC1 and ITV did last year.

Its a disappoiting rating, and this is exactly what would have been said by yo for TVUK if it dropped this much.

And ADP, I don't remember you calling TVUK 'ailing' when it did badly earlier this year, despite rating less than TXF and being at a higher rating part of the year.

I think the difficulty with freshening up the Live Shows of the X Factor is that there is only so much you can do. Whether you watch will depend on whether you like watching person after person sing someone else's song (no matter what the theme week). There isn't much you can do to change that. It's a bit like with Strictly- if you like watching couple after couple dancing, you will. I gues Strictly has a slight advantage because they do different dances, but then I guess you get ballads/uptempo songs on X Factor.

Keep It In The Family is so much better than Go For It. Its more family orientated fun. 2.8m for Go For It is not worthy of a recommission, especially when you consider the last 10minutes were probably boosted over 3m by TXF, and the rest of the ep was probably low 2m.

Disappointing for TXF last night. There's no dressing it up, especially since it was dark, not very warm, and the competition on the other channels was minimal.

Still, 7.44m is a big number by today's standards, but it would have probably been higher had SCD been on to prop it up a bit.

When Jonathon Ross finishes, I think if ITV want another chat show, they should go for a popular fun host. Now that ITV have signed up Dawn French to host Big Little Shots (who I think is perfect), Dawn would be great as a chat show host. Or perhaps even Dawn with Saunders together?

Would certainly make for a fun Chat Show, and having a comedian host would be different from JR.

Is it though? Of course it's not spectacular, but it was down 6% YOY with tougher competition. The series 12 equivalent, with pathetic competition, was down 11% YOY, so I'd say this year's rating was more resilient.

And I suppose that's all The X Factor can do now - manage the decline. Of course it should see some benefit in due course as I think the Rugby World Cup commenced mid September last year which shoved elongated shows to Sunday evenings. Splitting them up into manageable chunks should help.

Out of interest how did tonight's equivalent show rate last year?

Ross still wants to be Letterman with the set and the anarchic questions. He was almost rude to Malkovich last night insinuating that he was not good looking.

ITV on a Saturday night is more suited to the conversational style with no desk. Aspel was perfect at it. Wogan and Parky could do it.

A woman host would be a good idea. Malkovich seemed more comfortable with the Irish comedienne. She was better than Ross.

Build a set like a winter cabin with a fire and comfy chairs. Some wine and nibbles and see what flows. If all of the guests are from the same movie or TV show then sobeit. Preferably not quite though.

I know that sounds a bit Buble. Actually, some Des O Connor type of host could work.

Very slightly, yes. 7.7m would have been about right. Very marginal and the signs are still that the arrow is pointing up for TXF, not down.

With due respect I would never expect the Proms to be a hit with the BARB system.

Think it'll be down around the 7m mark at best. Being around even means it'll barely lose any viewers from the Saturday episode and it hasn't managed that so far this series.

sounds dreadful, and those new two wont ever be considered full Spice Girls. They would be far better off looking for a girl group who embody the spirit of the Spice Girls, "Girl Power" etc and using them as a support band.

This is the thing, nothing they could replace it with would do better or even nearly as well. So they're stuck in this situation where it's performing badly against Strictly, which everyone and their horse wants to compare it to, but on the other hand it's performing much much better than anything else they have got for 3 months of the year.

It was never going to set itself back alight so soon after so many below par series. Let's see what happens in the bootcamp through live shows.
