I love how people say Channel 5 can't afford The Great British Bake Off. Have you lot forgot who own Channel 5 now and how deep their pockets are?

The demise of Top Gear and now the loss of GBBO. This is not a good year for the BBC.

Remember who owns 70 percent of Love Productions...

To add, I'd be surprised if numbers didn't jump for the remainder of its last series on BBC now. Sad move, that's for certain.

The BBC couldn't afford to keep GBBO but could afford to bid so much for MOTD that itv didn't even try to compete with it.

It's about priorities. The BBC chose the Premier League over other sports and programming. MOTD gets 3m viewers.

Love is a business. This is no different to any other business wanting to sell its products for more money.

I won't dare to dream.

The only scenario where I could see it ending up on C4 or C5 would be if ITV feared a major backlash following the move. No doubt they'll be watching closely to see how the reaction unfolds in the coming days.

C4 or C5 would not worry about that. It would be an utterly transformative piece for either of them.

Sadly won't happen and it'll go to ITV.

I wouldn't count them out but I do think it's an odd fit for the channel.

The future of Top Gear could improve without Chris Evans.

The BBC has a wealth of talent. They will survive.

I hope that they can pull this back and just all agree to stay on the beeb. This isn't a slur on the fta channels but as the statement says ... its a natural home on the bbc. Is there dtill a chance?

From the press statement the BBC must be clinging onto the hope the public backlash will force Love to reconsider or ITV to drop out.

It's not about what Viacom can afford - of course they could afford it, but they'd still want to see a nice return on their investment. And the simple fact of the matter is it would get more viewers on ITV, and therefore they would be able to bid more confidently.

The only realistic danger to ITV if they bid is Sky. But I would be utterly astonished even with the links if they went down that road. This is, after all, fundamentally a programme about an extraordinarily high viewership, and in turn, a product that has immense appeal from an advertising perspective. The idea that you wouldn't want to fully exploit that and instead allow Bake Off to become some sort of loss-leader to get a few more Sky dishes put up, I'm really not buying.

Adverts, sponsorship, product placement. Lots of money to be made here.
I am not a watcher but I tend to agree it's a BBC type show.

Totally. This is BBC playing games. Look the nasty government won't let us take all the money we want in licence fee so we can't afford to pay for the most popular show in the country. Forget about all the money we spend (waste) elsewhere the only saving we must make is letting GBBO go to another channel. Really! Hmm....
