I imagine there is a few indies who won't be happy with Channel 4 as £25m means less money being spent on commissions, that could be good news for other broadcasters if more indies end up pitching ideas to them rather than Channel 4.

That's not true, though. Sky used to show Friends before C4. There's even a thread about it.

Sorry, got a bit confused. I remember Sky being interested and they obviously bought the first run rights. I think it might've been ITV who offered a lot of money for the FTA rights but the producers stuck with Channel 4 after having a good relationship with them, despite a lower fee per episode.

If C4 backed out they would look incredibly dumb. Not the impression you want to give to the world. The damage to its reputation would be a good argument for selling it off.

They certainly need to try to keep one of the judges at least.

Nice of Mel and Sue to tell everybody that if Hollywood or Mary switch then they are only bothered about the dough. Classy.
They're probably privy to information that we're not. I'd wager if Mel and Sue haven't been consulted that neither have Paul and Mary. I know Mary has been saying for a while she's not sure how long she'll continue, this would give her the opportunity to leave. Paul might be wooable but he has a really good relationship with the BBC and I expect he'll be more interested in continuing that.

Like Poldark and Victoria, I think it'll stay above 4m in the overnights.

I don't know whether that'd be enough for another series.
I think it probably will be. Relationship dramas are hard and the success rate isn't good. I'm surprised it isn't doing better though given how well received it has been and the hype around it. A pity as it's actually good.

I imagine Poldark and Victoria will both return too. Poldark's already filming again I believe.

The story that keeps on giving and I'm sure there are more twists to come yet.

If only the TV Festival had fallen a month later. Can you imagine?
It would be carnage. How I wish it had been a month later!

It's been an extraordinary sequence of events, with the winners and losers out of it changing throughout. I've no idea what happens next!

I imagine the international sales for Victoria and Poldark are strong enough to justify series 2 and 3. I wouldn't be surprised if ITV already has series 2 scripts written in case of a recommission

I think Cold Feet will be back although I think ITV probably will wait until episode 3 or 4 to see if ratings rebound

So are we expecting a ratings bump tomorrow for Bake Off? The publicity that has been around this show the last couple of days will surely have more people tuning in?

I thought I sensed a chill between Jay Hunt and Charlotte Moore on that Leader's Debate
As did I actually now you mention it!

Hunt is the biggest loser in all of this now, no question. She might as well have just commissioned C4's own baking show for a fraction of the cost to run when Bake Off is off air. And it would probably be easier to find talent for a new programme, as who in their right mind that is credible will want to be involved now given all the negative publicity around the move?

It's also a massive own goal when you consider the question marks around C4's future, potentially making privatisation more likely. Not to mention the fact she's made herself look a massive hypocrite given the comments she made about Black Mirror when that was taken from them by Netflix. And all for what? A version of Bake Off that will be Bake Off in name only as literally nothing else about it will resemble the BBC One programme?

It's just disastrous all round: disastrous for the BBC, disastrous for Love (long term anyway), disastrous for C4 and ultimately disastrous for UK TV, for all that I am not a lover of this particular programme personally.

But as a story? Can't beat it. I will buy the inevitable book on what happened here when it comes out.

No worries. I half remembered it being on sky but had to Google it. DS to the rescue.
I find it sad that 4 don't still have sitcoms on Fridays. BBT and ANother.

Can he not do both? If not, surely 4 would offer him a show. They love those sorts of shows.

Big Bang Theory should have been promoted to C4 years ago, no question about that. It's utterly bonkers that it plays out on E4 instead, where it is an exceptional rater by multichannel standards but ultimately not achieving its full potential.

In Australia it's regularly one of the most watched programmes for Channel Nine, the 2nd biggest commercial broadcaster over there, and the same would be true over here. Certainly I'd expect it to be doing 2.5m+ in the overnights, which would be the ideal starting point for a comedy block.

It's not like E4 would be massively weakened either, as they'd still house the repeats which would benefit from the primetime C4 exposure for the Big Bang brand.

It's a bit late in the day now sadly. An opportunity missed.

I'm sure he can but he knows that, for example, the motoring show he's doing couldn't exist on a commercial network, as you'd have to be nice to whoever's advertising during the show. That's why Top Gear could only exist on the BBC or somewhere like Amazon or Netflix, where there are no advertisers to please.

The BBC made Paul Hollywood. He'd only done a few spots on daytime telly before that, but Bake Off made him into a household name. Plus, the BBC have given him a different range of shows and subjects to do. That can all easily be taken away if he goes to Channel 4 - the BBC would be well within their rights to cancel his projects.

I'm 99% sure Paul is in a golden handcuffs deal anyway, despite what Channel 4 are claiming. Unlike Mel and Sue, Paul's never worked for a rival broadcaster in any major capacity and his only attempt at going stateside was a bit of a damp squib. He's in a much more precarious position - is he good enough to steer the ship alone with potentially 3 new people hosting and judging? I'm not so sure. Like I said, Bake Off was like a miracle - everything just clicked and worked. I don't think Paul alone can make people tune in, especially as of the two judges, he's the marmite one.

With the tagline 'more bad news for bake off fans' clearly Paul and Mary are also going

I wouldn't say that's a bombshell... Paul has always said he wanted the show to stay with the BBC whilst Mary has stated in the past that she would leave should Mel and Sue do so.

I mean wow, who can remember such a momentous story in TV terms as this- Truly extraordinary, you couldn't have made it up even a week ago.

Channel 4 swoop in with double the BBCs offer, splashing 75m on a massive 3 year contract without consulting any of the talent that make GBBO so special and subsequently losing all four of them (as it's more or less confirmed Paul and Mary are going by all accounts) I can't see this working out well for them, the GBBO name might be enough to get some bums on seats, but have they learned nothing from Top Gear? I mean it might 3-4m curiosity factor, at the end of a three year run with all the variations its not going to be doing much more than a homegrown 4 hit- What an absolute catastrophe for them, as they have to try and reboot the nations most popular show all the while Love Productions are laughing all the way to the bank.

If I was a Ch4 exec I'd be furious with Jay Hunt right now- She's basically given herself an impossible job and spent a bloody fortune in the process

I think it's probably the only thing Paul and Mary can do now. If they do go to Channel 4 (which I hope won't be the case), they'll just be seen as money grabbing.

In a weird kind of way, they come out of it much better if they leave too.

25 pages in 24 hours, surely that's the most in a day for this thread? I can't think of anything that's been so discussed as this.

Channel 4 will up the ad rates for the first series and advertisers will be frothing at the mouth thinking their products will be seen buy up to 11 million only for reality to hit when the series gets around 2 or 3 million
