I have a book titled 40 years of British Television and at the back they have a month by month top 20 guide of TV ratings from 1962 to when the book was published in 1992 - I could extract info from that if anyone wants

Or if they can't sign up Mary Berry but want a Mary Berry type on the programme they could pick Penelope Keith to be presenter. Penny (DAME Penny if you please) is now a C4 face as presenter of Hidden Villages.

Otherwise if everybody turns down Bake Off as "a poisoned chalice", maybe the next presenter will be someone going by the name of Jay Hunt.

Episode 1 was available to watch on Sky for some time before transmission, so are those figures added into the total or is this just the live figure?

And if Bake Off loses Mary but keeps Paul then I'm reminded of the ITV 80s smash Game For A Laugh which lost all-but-one of the on-screen team in one swoop. LWT paired the one-who-stayed, Jeremy Beadle, with a new team of co-presenters, only to see their programme plummet in the ratings. It was then axed.

If C4 hold onto Paul and Mary I can see the programme dropping in the ratings but still doing VERY good by C4 standards. I would have expected ratings to drop even if 4 had held onto the whole team, simple because it's moving from BBC1 to C4. That Virgin ad where only 7 year olds know how to work modern TVs seems to be quite accurate. Some people can't even find Channel 4

I have that book too, the ratings Ray post are from past issues of Broadcast (I think) and they have more information.

Even if you half the audience (to account for the on screen changes) then knock off another 10-20% (for the channel switch), you're still looking at a programme which will draw in about 4m viewers. Might be poor for it by its current standards but still a respectable figure, and one which BBC1 and ITV struggle to get most nights. I just don't think it's going to be the catastrophic failure many are expecting or want it to be.

Well, yes, 4m is good for C4 but I would still imagine that if ratings dropped that much Jay Hunt would get a bit of a kicking from the tabloid press. (Any excuse with that lot.)


The wording in that article seems to suggests that he is more likely to QUIT Bake Off than stay.

Two have quit, one's husband has said she's probably not going while "The Male Judge" has remained schtum throughout. I imagine a few failed businesses makes you more susceptible to silly money offers so let's pretend for a second that "a source" does mean they've had a kosher tip:


I wouldn't be surprised if he's waiting for Mary to say "No" officially so that his participation then becomes absolutely essential and Hunt will do anything to get him. He could name his own price at that point, after all that's what LP did!

Is it true that the reason the BBC couldn't pay Love Productions what they asked for for Bake Off was because they've spent all their spare cash on repeat fees for Mrs Brown's Boys?

I'm sure if the BBC stop showing repeats of Mrs Brown they'd be able to outbid Sky for live Premier League football.

It feels like living in a poor country with such a weak public broadcaster. Surely they could find other things to put on a Saturday after "Casualty"? The Tories have really killed the BBC. Also why isn't there a full series?
