Dunno why everyone is calling out ITV when BBC1's highest show had not even 3.1 million...for the first channel on the telly that's a joke.

It's burn off Summer. If BBC1 or ITV get ratings like that in Autumn or Winter then it's a story. Last night's ratings are meaningless to me.

What difference does the channel number make? The BBC don't even have to consider ratings really. ITV, as the largest commercial network in the UK, should be concerned when they have ratings of 1.6 million on a Saturday night.

Or rather 3.69m for Casualty? Not brilliant by any means but a tad higher than the 3.1m you cite.

Everyone is calling out itv because they are the biggest and most watched commercial network by a country mile and these figures would be considered good for Channel 5, acceptable for Channel 4, a little on the low side for BBC2, but for itv they are not acceptable particularly as we are adding +1. I find it sad to think my itv, my once favourite channel as a kid and teen is now reduced to this. For those of us old enough to remember the summer strike of 1979 when itv was shut down for over 6 weeks, it felt like the end of the world being stuck with just BBC1 and 2. It was dreadful. Would we care if we had to be deprived of itv for a month these days?????

Saturday night even in the summer, these figures are crud.com. I agree it is poor for the BBC also, Casualty getting just over 3.5 million viewers is low. I imagine the end of August can't come quick enough for itv and the start of X Factor.

Celebrity Big Brother: 1.35m (8.2%) inc +1

Not too terrible for a Saturday. Last years first Saturday got 910,000, so 50% up on that pretty much.
Well that is some spin. To be up 50%, it would need a rating of 1.82m.

Saying that, it's a decent number for the Saturday show.

From Steve/Broadcast and rzt

ITV (inc. +1)
Catchphrase - 2.61m (18.8%)
Tom Daley: Diving for Gold - 1.60m (10.5%)
1966: A Nation Remembers - 1.18m (7.1%)
That is truly awful. I knew it would be low, but not that low. Horrible, horrible night for ITV. If XF can return with 7m it's going to look huge next to that.

. No. 1.82m would be an increase of 100%.

No spin. It's basic maths.

Isn't it time we got over 1966 and accepted we are a second tier nation? Typical British mentality, live in the past.

Have noticed Skyfall is on AGAIN next Saturday. Are ITV broke?
I think last night's figures will result in more film repeats being churned out!

is iTV now a niche channel ?

I must admit i now have my TV off more evenings than its on.
For the past three weeks I have done nothing but watch Doctor Who and Hustle on Netflix. I have one episode and one series of Hustle left to watch and then it will be Death in Paradise from the beginning also on Netflix. Such is the state of television at the moment, I haven't found anything to entice me at all for months. It's such a shame because I used to frequent the ratings thread with enthusiasm. But seeing the two main channels dwindling on 3, 2 and 1 million figures is proof that they really don't know how to cater for their audiences anymore.

It seems obvious to me that the general public would love to watch both BBC1 and ITV1 of an evening.

It's the failure of those channels that is the problem.

Video-on-demand is great for those niche programmes that used to be on BBC2 and Channel4, but you can't beat the experience of the mass audience programmes that used to be the staple on BBC1/ITV1

Its quite in incredible how Celeb Masterchef can continue to do so well. They can get some of the most usless celebs on the programme, but still it rates well. Food shows NEVER fail to rate well for the BBC.
I think that's pretty sweeping, especially given that when Celebrity Masterchef was on Saturday nights a few years back, it was a total disaster. And I wish people didn't refer to "food shows" as one homogenous lump. Celebrity Masterchef has more to do with The Apprentice and shows like that than it does something like Nigel Slater. Yes, the celebrities are cooking in it, but that's not necessarily why people are watching it.

The point I am making is it doesn't matter how famous they are. Punters watch reality shows. You are a fine example of that. It's your gig, no problem.

What was Vicky famous for before I'n a Celeb ?
The quality of celebs on Masterchef is irrelevant imo. It's an entertaining format. That's why I watch anyway. For the record I think they tend to do pretty well in the celebrities they attract.
Well, yes, and it's funny you should mention Vicky Pattinson because the other day I watched her appearance on Murder In Successville and I really enjoyed it, I thought she was really good in it. I've barely seen her on anything else and I'm not bothered about seeing her on anything else, but I enjoyed her on that. But I watch Murder In Successville because I like Murder In Successville. I don't give a toss who the guest is as long as they're being funny.

Does Rugby League always do that badly on BBC2?
What happened to BBC2? Why would they fill up the schedule with Rugby League if no one watches it?
Rugby League is very rarely shown in primetime on the BBC, but I can't see how it did so badly anyway. It's hardly as if it was miles behind every other channel anyway. It's a minority sport but it doesn't hurt anyone, if they can put golf in primetime they can put rugby league there once in a blue moon. They won't be showing it then again this year. It wasn't helped by, as mentioned, a massive injury in the match which meant there was a lengthy stoppage, hardly very TV-friendly.

Besides, on Friday I saw many tweets from rugby league fans who were absolutely thrilled that the BBC were putting rugby league in primetime and giving it valuable exposure. We hear so much everywhere about how the Beeb shouldn't be chasing ratings and encouraging minority sports instead of throwing money at millionaire footballers and then we get inquests when a minority sport doesn't get millions of viewers.

Channel 5 have sacked Kelly Cates and hired BT Sport's Lindsey Hipgrave in an attempt to boost ratings. How they think replacing one experienced sports presenter with another is going to improve the ratings is a mystery to me.
Hang on, we're going to need a citation here, I think. I have not read anywhere that Channel 5 have "sacked" Kelly Cates, and I think I might be libellous to suggest they have. Cates is not presenting the new season but that does not mean she has been sacked. There can be many reasons as to why she's no longer presenting.

They'd have been better off ditching the presenters entirely and maximising match footage. A better quality programme, albeit still low rated I suspect, but at least it would challenge perceptions of the channel, something that the current programme with maximum waffle and minimum actual highlights does not.
The problem with a show like this, especially one that's on at 9pm, is that there's a need for presenters because there has to be a live element to ensure the programme runs to time. If all the matches are nine goal thrillers they can talk less, if they're all 0-0s they can talk more. You could argue that the talk is not very good, but there has to be some kind of talk, because it would be too hard to edit it all together without that buffer - especially so soon after the matches when there's no way to work out how long the actual match footage can be. It would be even worse if we had to see more from appalling 0-0s to fill up the time.

Plus the FA want to put a fourth sub on from QF onwards so the premier league teams can just put on a big name in the dying minutes to get a late winner.
Not sure this is the right thread to discuss this, but that's hardly any advantage for the Premier League teams because it's not in use until the quarter finals by which point it's more or less all Premier League clubs. And in addition, it's only being introduced because they're dropping replays from these rounds, where Premier League teams can get a second chance.

Not surprisd the tom daley and world cup shows did so badly there not really saturday night programmes are they.
Just looked at 1966. A nation remembers 1.18M?! It would not have done any better on any other night. Just terrible. Or maybe people are now more angry that England have not won anything since.
I think those ITV ratings are worth remembering when someone suggests that we should have something other than LE on a Saturday night, the audience simply doesn't want it and it feels all wrong. Same as, as I mentioned earlier, when the Beeb showed Masterchef on Saturday a few years back.

I'm sure the programmes themselves were perfectly fine, I'm going to watch the 1966 one later. But even though it was on the day itself, I think it probably didn't help, like their Euro 96 doc the other week, that the BBC had already done a documentary on the same subject a few weeks earlier, so it felt a bit second hand. And maybe it might have been better received if England weren't so bloody awful at the moment.

Well, you say this, and sorry if this sounds a bit weird, but surely one of the reasons you have Netflix is to watch Netflix, and that will inevitably mean watching it instead of broadcast TV. If you don't watch it, it's a waste of money. And the programmes you mention are all BBC programmes anyway, so presumably the Beeb do know how to cater for their audience because you're still watching their programmes, two of which are continuing series anyway.

And in addition of course it's July. In the past the Beeb may well have been showing repeats of Doctor Who and Death In Paradise in any case. And if you include the news, BBC1 was brand new and British from 5.35 until 10.35 last night, including two new dramas and three new entertainment programmes. OK, they may not have been out of the top drawer, but you would certainly not have got that very often in the past, in July.

I mean, last night I only watched Pointless, but so what? It's July and I have other stuff to do. I don't want to watch telly all night.

I do not think it's relevant if posters post here day in day out or " disappear " some do not live on the Internet or this forum, or thread year round.
Er, yes, I would agree with that. I don't think it's at all constructive to take issue with posters and when they do or do not wish to post. That kind of attitude also puts people off from posting.

I've not watched anything on main channels on Saturday night since new year apart from Mrs Brown's boys. Earlier in year I'd pick up on recorded stuff but currently naff all on during week so it's box sets at moment.

Once Man Down went up against Boy Meets Girl, Boy Meets Girls ratings took a hit. But it was suffering before that as episode 1 of series 2 didn't hit 1 million.

Boy Meets Girl is a sitcom built on a character being transgender rather than jokes. It's not very funny.
Sort of, but they sidelined the main couple this series to try to make it into a comedy about the families. However, It never was a comedy, more a sweet love story.

So by killing off that story and still failing to make it a funny sitcom they lost the only edge they had and most of the audience.

Almost universally the reaction has been that series 2 is much inferior to series 1. And that was barely funny in the first place.

On this issue, Steve, I strongly and utterly disagree. Yes, I have Netflix. But it is something I watch when there is nothing else to watch. It isn't my primary choice for TV watching. I would much rather watch an evenings entertainment of new and varied programming that is exciting, informative and well worth watching. The only stand out programme recently is The Living and the Dead which I will watch during the OIympics. I watched the first two episodes and thought it was fabulous. But the format on Saturday night of Celebrity Pointless and another dreary Nick Knowles lottery quiz is not enticing and enjoyable, and the viewing figures suggest I'm correct. People will sit down and watch good programmes, even in Summer, but when broadcasters have drifted into "can't be arsed" territory, then the viewers get so used to that attitude that they stop expecting decent programming and switch to other means to entertain themselves. If broadcasters make the effort, people will watch. No matter what time of year it is. I would rather watch actual broadcast television rather than Netflix, but there simply is nothing to watch.

BBC1 and ITV are now full of terribly poor programmes that mean nothing to audiences. Obviously most people will not bother.

If BBC1/ITV1 were instead packed full of live events, comedy and engaging light entertainment programming then they would get a significant audience again.

What has happened is that both the BBC and ITV are now run by people who are not into TV.

Thank you rzt and cylon!

I make that a timeshift of 2.36m. Fantastic rating, and that share is brilliant.

Edit - I've just seen on the Bake Off Instagram that it will be returning on 24 August.

I'm wondering if any of the BBC's sitcom season in September can match or better that Mrs Brown rating - Porridge with Fletcher's grandson, Are You Being Served with the all-new cast, the Keeping Up Appearances prequel. Expect they may get better slots than Mrs Brown did. Fantastic rating for something that seemed to be rather randomly scheduled.

The Bake Off start day is not a surprise. First Wednesday after the Olympics.

The problem with a show like this, especially one that's on at 9pm, is that there's a need for presenters because there has to be a live element to ensure the programme runs to time. If all the matches are nine goal thrillers they can talk less, if they're all 0-0s they can talk more. It would be even worse if we had to see more from appalling 0-0s to fill up the time.
I'm simply joining the dots with regards to Kelly Cates. Her and George Riley presented Football League Tonight last season. It got terrible, terrible ratings all season. Kelly Cates' presenting was panned by prominent TV critics including Ian Hyland. Channel 5 began to make changes to the programme at the end of last season. Now this season, Kelly Cates is no longer one of the presenters of the show. That to me and to most others would suggest she had been sacked (or in other words, had her contract terminated/not renewed).

It's not necessarily libellous to suggest it because we have simply come to an obvious conclusion based on what has happened. If proof or reporting emerges showing that Kelly Cates was not sacked, I will happily retract my statement.

The football chat can be good if they can get some decent presenters and pundits who can build up a good rapport. I think a Soccer Saturday style format with one host and three or four pundits sat at an adjoining desk would work better. The highlights could be shown, as introduced by the host, and the various pundits could give their opinions. They should try to get recognisable pundits and keep them the same each week so that the viewers can become familiarised with them and they can build up a rapport.
