Emmerdale hour-longs overlapped with EastEnders every week from the beginning of 2007 until mid-2008 (or was it 2008-09?), with some Thursday ones thrown in for good measure. EastEnders stayed in place.

The Tuesday line-up of...
7.30 EastEnders
8.00 Holby
9.00 Drama/Factual

...works well for BBC One, so they wouldn't tear it up to accommodate ITV.
But Emmerdale didn't overlap every day and Emmerdale is not Corrie. I believe Emmerdale started to beat EE too though I may be wrong.

As for Tuesdays, is Holby always going to be on? Is it now a soap which never is off like the three bigs? Is Casualty also a weekly soap too then?

Holby and Casualty are medicated soaps and are quite cheap Drama wise to make as continuing drama. I think the costs per episode is circa £600k compared with the average drama of £1 million an episode.

Both do reasonable business with circa 4/5 million viewers.

Holly is year long 52 episodes a year, Casualty is typically 46 a year but adjusted when there is major sport events on.

The £ savings are that thry have there own sets, and are made week in week out, so value for money, important to the BBC and in some ways educate the audience on medical issues with the soap.

With other drama getting 2/3 million they are safe bets and casualty does ok on Saturdays as an alternative to ITV.

Like all soaps they are habit viewing, so any break, could loose viewers. The actors etc are also hired for long runs giving continuity and any break would loose some regulars.

Any gap would leave a hole in the budget and a massive hole in the schedule that would gave to be filled with repeats as they couldn't pay for or commission more drama.

Holby gives a great lead into the 9 pm slot on Tuesdays helping that programme often typically a good drama.

The treatment of Holby in Scotland is poor, thry have River City on at 8 on Tuesday and Holby is shunted to 10.45 on Wednesday there which eats into its ratings. BBC1 should find a better compromise on that.

It is the new series of Red Dwarf tonight on Dave. How do we think it will perform ?

I think we could see numbers just under a million viewers. I am not sure what the channel gets on average. I haven't seen much of any promotion for the new series at all.

Is Charlotte Moore obssessed with health issues? That's all BBC seems to show these days. And, in Autumn too.

I have a feeling that this will be BBC1's weakest Autumn since 2013.
With a growing number of obese people in the UK, type 2 diabetes is becoming a big issue.

Actually I think they were slammed every week due to Lewis getting a lower figure than it had done on another day of the week previously. They were accused of obviously trying to kill off Lewis by not airing in on a different day.
On this thread, maybe. I can't imagine any real viewer saying that at all.

Plenty of trails for it. You'd need to have watched Dave to have seen them.

I'm not disputing that. I'm not even disputing BBC1's role in airing these type of programmes. But it's all they seem to be showing of late. A Doctor Comes to live with you, A Doctor gives up drugs, Cancer, Alzheimer's and now Diabetes.

Why not create a special medical factual slot Monday's at 10.35pm rather than repeats of Have I Got News For You? Peaktime 9pm is an appalling slot to keep showing these kinds of programmes. Especially at the regularity that they're being shown.

That might be why I haven't seen them.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I find watching it a bit flat now. It's still an enjoyable show, but it feels like a tainted version of what it once was. I also seem to have noticed how egotistic Paul Hollywood is, something I always knew but just innocently ignored. In my view, he is the worst thing about Bake-Off. Oh, and Mary's hands! They look like claws.

But, I'll take my bitchy head off now and just acknowledge the ratings with a

Is that not because now its moving to Ch4, you don't quite feel the love for it anymore? Do you not think you would enjoy it on Ch4?

I suspect there are many like you who will not follow it to Ch4. Its quite amazing how adverts stop some viewers in watching commercial TV (not referreing to you btw).

Mary had polio as a child- that's why her left hand has gone like that.

Good for her. So, only Paul went with the dough then. He'll have to have two salaries. One for him and one for his ego!

We still have to wait for confirmation just incase he changes his mind.

GBBO is going to struggle with just him following the show over to C4 if he does take the money. It shouldn't be too long before confirmation comes out considering Mary's decision.

When you watch Mel and Sue on Bake Off, even though I don't regard them as the best comedians in the world, they are so natural and warm hearted on the show that it makes it instantly accessible. Mary also is never rude or direct about a person's efforts and just offers criticism in a dignified, but polite manner. That is what Bake Off is. It's quintessentially British. The slight eccentricities of Mel and Sue and the British etiquette of Mary is what makes Bake Off. It flows nicely, there is a constant continuity with it that makes it watchable and enjoyable.

Bake Off on C4 without Mel, Sue and Mary, the three vital ingredients, won't be Bake Off. It'll just be another cooking competition. It'll be like a Rolls Royce with a mini-metro engine.

It's not just you, I feel exactly the same.

Confirmation bias perhaps, but it's something that is more striking now.

Oh, and Mary's hands! They look like claws.
I had always assumed that it was something like arthritis, but in fact it's because she had polio as a child - it left her with a misshaped left hand.

I wonder if the BBC actually has some kind of completion baking show in mind now. Bake Off is pretty much a narrow banded Masterchef as far as I can see so the basic format is hardly confined to one programme.
