If Paul doesn't go, then Channel 4 have really shot themselves in the foot big time. 75 million quid for a tent with ovens.

In case anyone doubted my sources... Mary Berry has quit and Paul was seen going to the Channel 4 offices in person today! Just a shame it's ended the way it has, but I expect the BBC's happy with the result.

It would be a miracle if the show maintains its (to me) mystifyingly successful grip over the nation and its an almost certain goodbye to these ridiculously huge ratings. Bake Off is up there with the greatest stories on this thread, its unexpected rise from BBC2 obscurity to ratings that perhaps only X Factor has achieved regularly at its peak in the last 10 years or so. Brittle(as its turned out) magic perhaps, but magic all the same.

The ovens are hired, and almost everything in it apparently (maybe they own the bunting)!!!

Not entirely sure what they've bought, except the rights to call a baking show The Great British Bake Off. It will certainly bear little resemblance to the current show - very sad to think next year won't have the show I've loved for 7 series.

So she's not going out of loyalty, Mel & Sue are not going for the money.

The unravelling of the Bake-Off is fascinating.

The biggest show on TV right now being torn to shreds at its peak. Has this ever happened so publicly before?

I wouldn't be surprised if Paul went to C4 alone, but then a part of me thinks he may also stay loyal to Mel, Sue and Mary. It doesn't look good if he is the only one that lets the money talk.

I've heard people saying even Welford Park may not permit the next series of Bake Off to be filmed there. The owners of the grounds are familiar with the current set-up and are dubious about a new team. I guess the relationship with the current four is what is important, and broken relationships can cause doubt.

Broadcast says Happy Valley will not be returning for at least two years, but Sally Wainwright already has a new series commission which will air next year on BBC1.

If they do that, there will almost certainly be a massive lawsuit between the BBC, Love Prod. and Channel 4. And it'll be interesting to see exactly how it turns out. What does Love Prod actually own apart from the name? The pressure on Paul Hollywood to state its intentions soon must be huge (and I still don't know whether he's been offered Top Gear).

And I agree with the poster above who said that since the public has been made aware of the huge financial battles raging in the background, the show has lost a bit of its appeal. It doesn't feel quite as quaint, cosy and comforting. The spell it cast on the audience has been somewhat lifted.

I have only seen corporate implodes like this once before, Gerald Ratner of Ratners Jewellery said that a M&S sandwich was better value and would last longer than his Jewellery, his company lasted about a year.

Love productions have killed this well loved show stone dead, killed a programe that they could have got £15 million for, C4 have made a seriously misjudgement.

IMHO Paul is just playing hard ball negotiations to get the best deal, in his heart he has no plans to go to 4, just wants to get the most out if the situation.

Whatever the ratings on 4 it will be like Top Gear, and the tabloids will have a field day ripping apart the 4 show, it's toxic.

Yes, think of the public backlash Hollywood would get if he goes to C4. Has anyone seen The Santa Clause 2? It suddenly came to me that Paul Hollywood looks like the plastic Santa on that!

He didn't worry about how it might look if it came out when he had an affair with his co-star.

I'm not sure Hollywood is the type to lose sleep over this.

As long as it isn't Bake Off, as long as it doesn't emulate Bake Off, then the BBC can make and show what they like, when they like. They always show a baking competition in August, so if that's what they choose to show next August, what's to stop them?

Love Productions don't own the baking competition monopoly.
