With channel 4 he is definitely getting more money and they will definitely give him shows. Is it such a great career move when the majority of people who watched Bake Off (and therefore may have been likely to watch new shows you were doing), think you only went there for the money, and probably won't watch anything you do now anyway?

Courtesy? Going by the reports, the BBC had otehr offers opeb for him, so it would be expected that he would have to inform them that he would not be in a position to accept those offers.

The courtesy was from Hollywood, not C4. It was Love Productions' show, not the BBC's.

Absolutely true. It is a tough business. Nobody is a victim in this and all four people have made decisions that they think will work best for them. They probably all come out with more money over the long-term too.

If Twitter is a good guide, Red Dwarf did the polar opposite of Paranoid. Even Sheldon liked Red Dwarf.

A decent enough performance, albeit fairly unremarkable. A bigger eyecatcher on the night out of the debutants was ABC's Designated Survivor (9.95m/2.3) in the 10pm hour.

Americans seem to stay up watching TV much later in the US than here.

Possibly because there isn't much worth watching on British TV after about 10.30 p.m. ?

I get that but the 10-11 hour there seems to be similar to the 9-10 here and then they show interesting things after that there while they completely give up heer at 10.30 for some reason.

Paranoid should start well but I thought it was poor. A surprise considering the talent involved. I'll be watching The Fall from next week.

I'd say that was pretty decent for Red Dwarf especially when you consider the episode was up on preview for a week.

And yet Mary Berry decided to stay and mentioned the BBC's role in her press release. Just like Mary, Paul Hollywood was offered shows on the BBC on the back of Bake Off. In the public's view they don't see courtesy just someone that left for more money and didn't leave with the others.

I see no reason for the BBC not to put out a statement. It's more positive PR for them and negative PR for Channel 4.

It wasn't a great ep though. For a series opener it needed to be funnier. Be interesting to see the figures next week - Is that ep online in advance too?

If the comments here as it aired are any indication it will drop like a stone next week.

What you have to remember is there are different time zones in America. Something airing at 10pm in New York will be airing at 9pm in Houston, which means viewing figures can be slightly higher. But there is a tradition of late night tv in America that we don't have, at least 5m people watch The Tonight Show until 12:35 and there are at least 2m people on each of the other networks that keep watching until 1:35am. It's madness really but it's always been like that there.

It helps that their news hour is always 11pm, allowing more primetime stuff, whereas ours has always been 9 or 10, so British viewers are used to the news at 10 now.

Mary is supposedly the face of the BBC’s cooking universe. It's a fabulous gig and she's a wise choice. We don't know but my bet is that C4 want to make Paul one of the faces of C4. Both win. Maybe everybody wins. The public might have two shows instead of one and the taxpayer saves millions of pounds a year.

Plus with Downton Abbey, Mr Selfridge and Home Fires all over, Victoria is the perfect vacancy of their next big period drama hit to sit alongside The Durrells.
