Production companies are mainly loyal to broadcasters who commissioned their shows because it brings in more revenue for them via other commissions and from the way they behave towards a broadcaster. It's all well and good taking shows from one channel to show yourself, but it does the reputation of that company no favours because once shows lose popularity, the broadcaster you stung might not use you and other broadcasters may feel "Uhm, not sure. If it gets popular they might take it away from us!"
Principles seem to be a thing of the past, and if the BBC ever poached Simon Cowell to deliberately harm ITV's ratings, I would be just as opinionated about that. The Voice, in reality, is not a very good show anyway. Beyond the spinning chairs there is no soul. I think the BBC deliberately let it go to avoid more scrutiny from the Government. But, the principle remains the same. You simply don't go around nicking other channels shows that are successful because you are unable to find a hit yourself. If Love Productions wanted commercial and sponsorship deals through Bake Off, they should have kept pestering C4 from the off. C4 didn't want it. ITV didn't want it. Nobody wanted it.
Sorry for my long grumblings, but I just believe courtesy and etiquette are more important than mega bucks and a bad reputation. Perhaps the things I believe in are a dying trend, and I'm sad about that, but the world has become greedy and unethical. I'm glad I won't be around in 50 years time to see it become even worse.”
No offence taken. I'm not young, we aren't far apart.
The instinct I have is that if you can not move your product, you are at the mercy of the broadcaster. The small guy is dominated by the big guy.
PDC darts has just been shown on the BBC. There's a possibility that other tournaments could end up on the beeb. The PDC owes everything to sky. Now I don't know if sky are pleased or not about Barry Hearn trying to get darts on the BBC and I don't care. The BBC offers intangibles and that is why people offer them products.
It's the same reason the NFL allow the BBC to show the Superbowl which is a bit of a kick in the teeth to sky after the way sky kept the NFL breathing in the UK in thr 90s.
They are business decisions made by the sports but they can't grumble if sky dumped them. However content is king and they're betting sky need them in what is a symbiotic relationship.
It's worth remembering that broadcasters can treat a sport or show badly when they tire of it. ITV are going to have to give horse racing CPR after the way C4 has abused it and people on here have posted about the way ITV treated Home and Away.
It's not fair that the BBC can't poach shows but then that's because of the unique way the BBC is funded. I'm pleased BBC Studios will be able to compete soon.
It's a business decision whether to take the most money or protect buyer relationships. Love Productions may have made a mistake and may go bust because of it. That's on them.
If you're a farmer who has always sold to Morrison's and suddenly you switch to selling to Tesco, good look to you. Just don't complain if Tesco ditch you at a later date and no other supermarket wants your sausages.
As you say, Love has harmed its reputation but they had no obligation to stay with the BBC. I'm sure Endemol would like the BBC to keep buying more Total Wipeouts from them but the BBC made a business decision to not renew the contract.
