Well, they can't all be big hits, can they? A show with Nick Knowles doing yoga is going to be a more acquired taste. But it's like the old Michael Gove quote, isn't it, not every show can be above average.

And it is a fact that there is a lot of churn at seven o'clock. The 6-7pm slot on BBC2 (and C4 and C5) is clearly watched by a lot of people trying to avoid the news. When that's finished a lot will go to The One Show and a lot will go to Emmerdale because they watch them every night, so you're never going to hold on to the entire It Takes Two audience. It's the same as at ten o'clock, a lot of people go to the news, a equal number of people go away from the news.


Yes, but different with those shows and in those days, though, as I mentioned before there was only one series of Airport a year so people watch happily watch both because there wasn't that much to go around. And of course there's far more that you can show and talk about in an airport than you can about bloody parking.


Well, that's as maybe, but it simply cannot be said "X got X million on BBC1, Y (being on a similar subject to X) got Y million on ITV, DEFAULT AUDIENCE" because there are a million and one reasons why the audience is different. They can be in different slots, they can have different competition, and most importantly, one show might be much worse than the other.

We had that when C5 did the series going behind First Great Western and Sky 1 did the series going behind the scenes of East Coast two minutes later. I watched the C5 series and enjoyed it and by that theory, I should have also watched the Sky 1 series and enjoyed it equally. But I didn't, I stopped after episode one, because a) all the interesting stuff was very similar to what had been on the C5 show and I didn't need to see it again, and b) the Sky 1 series was crap, it was badly made and annoyingly produced. It's simply wrong to suggest any two series are identical and deserve identical ratings, and it's patronising to the audience to suggest they lap up anything on a subject regardless of its quality.

Same as with Ambulance, it makes no sense to say, oh, other ambulance shows are cheap filler. They're all different shows. Some of them string videos together, some of them are proper documentaries that have unparalleled behind the scenes access. Ambulance is clearly the latter. It was Pick of the Day in the Radio Times and got reviewed in The Guardian. You don't get that with the shows on ITV4 and Quest. It's clearly a different type of show - a quality, authored documentary of the type that has been a staple on BBC1 for decades, like Inside Story or one of those strands.

It's like looking at a programme about ABBA on ITV2 and a programme about ABBA on BBC4 and saying, oh, they're both about ABBA, they should get the same ratings, where one is stringing videos together and one is a serious documentary about their musicianship. And the audience can tell them apart.

You may as well argue Bake Off and BBQ Champ should be getting the same audience, they're both cooking competitions. Never mind the quality of these shows, just look at the numbers and take a quick glance at the title and just make assumptions about what they might be like. Ridiculous.

I think BBC2 struggle with 7-8pm, the Great British Menu is good and maybe they could extend it to the whole hour, but apart from that you get Nick Knowles in a sauna or repeats of Mary Berry/Michael Portillo, which I think is lazy as I would expect original programming at that time of day.

Talking of BBC2, how do people think their arts night on Saturday will do? I can't see how poetry will bring in a big audience myself. It feels like it should be on BBC4. I'll watch it to see however.

It's interesting that programmes about transportation like Great British Railway Journeys do well. Channel 5 had success with The Tube and FGW and BBC Two had a numerous railway programmes as has BBC Four.

Is there not some England games coming up in the next few weeks

The amount of shows I've watched over the last few years about the London Underground/TfL shows that people do watch shows about the same thing.

I found the series about East Coast Trains on Sky (I watched it on Pick) perfectly fine, lots of faux drama like there always is but it was enjoyable enough.

Many recent shows like Shop well for less have been done before on ITV, as part of Tonight or a Martin Lewis fronted format, yet they still rated well and probably better on BBC One.

There is no reason why Car Wars should have been such a flop, those sorts of shows are all the same, not exactly exciting enough to plan your evening around but ok enough.

A shock death in Emmerdale tonight, one that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the TV listings magazines, not even listed in a vague "Moria reveives devastating news" "The villagers come to terms with some shocking news" kind of way.

Yes ED continues to deliver those shocks. When will Kate Oates begin to bring that drama to Corrie as it's still absolutely dire imo?

I'm predicting Paranoid will be down to low 3m tonight. I can't see this being over 3m for any more episodes this series.

Its an 'ok' drama, lots of well known faces, but its another run-of-the-mill crime drama. Nothing to make an audience stick around.

It certainly does. I was not expecting that tonight. Massive shock indeed. Kate Oates seriously needs to inject some of that magic into Corrie...and fast!!

I just think the Emmerdale production team are better than Corrie. Its kierean Roberts that I think is holding Corrie back so much.

He probably doesn't want shocks etc., like Emmerdale - so everything has to be leaked ahead instead.

I do hope this upcoming big week for Corrie sparks life into the soap, and from then onwards we have consistent quality. I want some shocks in Corrie to reate a talking point.

Kieran Roberts has been executive producer since 2006. Considering the highs and lows of the show in the past decade I think it's unfair to put the blame on him. In fact I doubt he has much input at all...

No perhaps not, but I think the complete refresh of much of the top bosses would perhaps be wise.

Corrie feels so much like it needs a fresh team at the top.

I wouldn't be surprised if it replaces DCI Banks on Wednesdays.

There's five Wednesdays available until IAC starts so ITV could easily schedule Dark Angel and HIM in the same slot with HIM starting on the 27th. I did think Dark Angel would go on Mondays after Cold Feet since there were two Monday slots available but I'm not sure now.

Dark Angel will get Mondays. The Wednesday after DCI Banks ends ITV are showing a one off documentary so there won't be room for both dramas on Wednesday.
