I meant the biggest show on commercial TV at present.
I don't see how what I wrote is at all personal, just refuting his (in my view, a touch ridiculous) points.

Well they are two VERY different statements.

Mentioning one of Dannc's personal interests is not relevant to X Factor is it? That makes it personal. And unnecessary.

"Stick to talking about C5 shows with 400k viewers" was not remotely personal at all, was it?

Using someone's posting history against them in that way is very low behaviour I'm afraid. We all find different things interesting, it doesn't make us weird. Some only come here to look at big numbers and that's fine, but I can appreciate a show like Can't Pay doing 2m+ every week on C5 just as much as a show on ITV doing 6m+.

As for whether or not X Factor is or isn't regressing, forgive me if I don't take seriously a view on this matter from the very person who this morning had to be corrected on it being down year-on-year after they initally declared it was up!

Mid 6's is okay I guess in today's ratings, but they've been well and truly left behind by Strictly now and the ever increasing gap will be making ITV increasingly uncomfortable I suspect. It's not so much about losing bragging rights, or not being able to schedule as aggressively as they would like; but rather, it underlines the extent to which they are not achieving their full potential in that slot. It's not like the soap situation whereby there's been consistent declines across the board. The demand for high quality Light Entertainment via broadcast is as strong as ever, indeed ITV's very own I'm A Celebrity is an example of that, but X Factor is still regressing despite on paper more things going for it this year, and so if ITV have anything about them at all as our main commercial broadcaster they will strive for better sooner rather than later. That doesn't necessarily mean cancel the show when it's still capable of doing a job, but the need to reduce their dependence on it in Q4 has never been greater. Especially with Downton gone as well.”

That's absolutely spot on. I don't know if ITV will be uncomfortable though. Maybe relieved that it hasn't dropped any more? But as you say, it is doing a decent job. I think the task for it is to stay consistent. If it drops any more, like into the 5's regularly, then alarm bells will ring.

And something that has been in my head all day about XF. Not about ratings, so probably not the right place to write this, but that jukebox?! It's so naff! It felt like that big wheel on The Price is Right (which I loved as a kid, bring it back!). When I watched the results last night something seemed really off about it. Like the energy and verve had gone. I can't put my finger on it. I remember those peak years of 2009 and 2010 when everyone talked about it, and deservedly so as it was a powerhouse despite despising everything Simon Cowell stands for with a passion re his music and dropping a lot of artists after a short space of time. It felt like an event, and event TV in general is lacking these days. X Factor is simply just another entertainment show that is long past its glory years now.

Gone way off topic so I apologise. But hey, it's an opinion.

And Dan R dismissing Dancc's opinion was uncalled for. Would this thread really be one sided? It's a TV show that lasts for 4 months, other programmes come along in quick succession.

I just have a different perspective to most on this thread, don't make me a troll.
Face it, if it weren't for me this thread would be 100% one-sided - which I'm sure you'd love.

There is no need to be so rude to a fellow poster is there? A poster which, I might add, is one of this thread's most consistent in terms of high quality and balance.

His post was based on fact - I heard the same radio broadcast also - and definitely wasn't deliberately antagonistic.

I suggest you apologise immediately.

This is exactly how I felt about it last night. There was more than an element of going through the motions about it. It's a shame after a largely good series upto now.

After an initial pilot that aired on BBC One as part of the reinstated Comedy Playhouse strand earlier this year, BBC Comedy has commissioned a full series of Hospital People, produced by Rough Cut Television for 2017.

Left behind in overnights more than consolidated ratings. I would not say it is regressing either. Neither is it growing.

Both channels need more LE hits. BBC1 have Sundays sorted though.

As you say, this years panel is good but it's what they should have went with in 2014 and not made any changes since, and the figures would tell a different story. It would probably be rating a good 2-3m above where it is now.”

It probably wouldn't be. Younger skewing shows have to try and evolve as viewers get bored quicker and move on to the next thing. Older skewing shows are more comfortable like you say. The majority of the Channel 4 schedule is an example of this, compared with large parts of the BBC One schedule.

Strictly will be doing well because you've got the older viewers who have always been there and then increasing numbers of younger viewers who are attracted by the increasingly younger feel since Brucie left, and they won't have been watching for all 12 years or however long it's been.

Also shows featuring celebrities tend to have a longer life than those featuring members of the public, as even if the format gets tired, there's always a few celebs who hook you back in for another year. The likes of Big Brother and even Who wants to be a Millionaire? Support this theory.

A combination of being on the BBC, being old skewing, and featuring celebs will be why Strictly continues strongly as ever. All key elements of a long success. I do often wonder how long the current SCD vs TXF era will continue though. Blind Date vs Noel's House Party was a ratings war at the time but it probably only lasted about 5 years. Whereas people remember 90s telly, this era is basically going to be all of 00s and 10s telly, and maybe even into the 20s?

And it's a bit ironic someone on commercial radio criticising The X Factor when a large amount of their content is made up of snippets of throwaway TXF gossip in between 10 songs back to back. Like the papers, they love to hate it, but would miss it when it's gone. They wouldn't get many column inches out of an episode of Catchphrase.

Agreed. On that subject of Cowell dropping artists quickly, what's the story with James Arthur they had on last night? I remember there being a string of controversies involving him, then one of his records bombed and that was it, he was done. They don't normally come back from that. Yet this guy has not only re-signed with Cowell's label, but he's also now top of the singles chart? That's quite a turnaround, and very unlike Cowell. Just wondered if there was more to this story that I don't know.

How do you work that one out? You're not the only X Factor fan who posts on here - just the only one who thinks it's an absolutely faultless piece of television and that all criticisms of both its content and ratings performance are completely invalid and should be stamped out immediately.

I admit; perhaps it would be best not to get worked up so quickly when I see a post I perceive as incorrect, however I'm still allowed to call people's statements into question - just healthy debate.

Your posting history this series doesn't stack up with the bold bit. At all!
You might call it 'going through the motions', I call it 'tradition'. Ignoring the notion of 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' is what lost the show viewers in the first place. The format, particularly the live one, is like slipping into comfy well-worn slippers - just like all the greatest entertainment formats, e.g. The Apprentice and BGT. For me, tradition and nostalgia is a part of their appeal.
Of course, twists are welcomed, but systemic changes to the show's DNA would probably go down like a lead balloon.

Or maybe, just maybe, I disagree with OTT comments and doom-mongering. Which, I feel, your earlier post was.

I don't think the Juke-box was anything to ruin a series. Putting through poor singers perhaps, but a Juke-Box to decide the next theme was only 5minutes or less of a 1hr show.

The X Factor is having to adapt to appease the younger, more fickle audiences. If you look at the older skewing shows, many of them (SCD, AR and Coronation Street) are the same as they were years ago. Nothing has really changed (bar quality). The younger skewing shows have adapted to stay relevant, The X Factor being the biggest example.

Probably pointless info but I've just seen on the ITV press centre that Tutankhamen is only 4 episodes, so will finish on 6 November. Then the week after (13 November) I'm a Celebrity will begin again.

Obviously, not long to wait for it to start. They really need to get the casting right for IAC this year. Last year was dull and had too many reality 'stars'.
