I agree with this about Sky and the HBO deal is bringing in US series likely not getting any prominent UK air time otherwise.
I guess my point was really about how Netflix by acquiring rights to the kind of shows that Sky used to aspire towards are positioning themselves as a rival for go to new US TV as well as binge watching and their own new productions. The post I referred to was comparing Sky and Netflix and the relative value of each to the subscriber. Sky's subs are high and adding Netflix as well is not something many will choose (especially as Sky, unlike Virgin, are not rushing to offer a Netflix option on their boxes) But if Netflix expand their policy of grabbing hot new US series they might start abstracting viewers from Sky given that £7.49 pm is a lot cheaper than the £20 pm basic Sky Q package Sky have just started. Sky dropping their HD + boxes as the standard and (unless they have a valid reason to need a Sky HD + box instead) making new customers take Sky Q with its streaming rather than recording seems to be heading them more in the Netflix direction, too. These appear to be squaring up as the two main non Freeview TV premium package options in the UK. I asked a while back about Netflix ratings because I was sensing the above. As posted about Westworld above Sky are happy to promote how well that show is doing in all its options to be seen not just 'live' viewing. If Netflix become a direct rival and we have no way to judge how their shows are doing then Sky will have an edge by being able to push their hit 'ratings'. Netflix might think they need to be more proactive in that respect if they want to take custom off Sky. I didn't know sky were now treating Q as its default box. They must have mined many of the early adopters and so are broadending the base now. It needs a price cut. Sky has previously said that it doesn't consider Netflix and Prime to be real rivals of theirs. They created Now to counter them and see them as serving a largely different market. I'm not sure I buy that. Netflix though has its own problems. Growth has stalled in America and bigger boys are launching. There's a touch of Spotify about them or even Blackberry. I've often wondered if a bigger threat to sky is actually Now TV itself. |

Super ratings. But that rating for The Missing does highlight how much Our Girl underperformed. It's a good figure for The Missing. It dropped a little during the episode so perhaps a 5.8 for next week. |

I know Tuesday flop zone is a running gag but the night can be brought back from the dead. 5 years ago, it was unthinkable that Friday Night on CBS could feature three shows rating 9m+. They moved CSI NY there to kill it off, but it rated well enough that they got a 10m rating show, Blue Bloods, leading out of it.
Then they cancelled CSI NY and moved the already established Hawaii 5-0 there and it did the unthinkable and increased its audience! Now they've got MacGyver leading into them, and they've pretty much made Friday an incredibly strong night. Other networks are trying to do the same now and have finally realised that audiences will seek out good shows, regardless of the night BUT you do need to put in some work to get rid of the stigma. Quote:
The Friday block on CBS while old skewing is a solid night, who have thought replacing The Amazing Race with MacGyver would prove such a good move and likewise NCIS: Los Angeles to Sundays. I won't be surprised if NCIS: New Orleans moves to Fridays at 8pm or Sundays at 9pm next season as it's not doing so hot at 10pm after Bull

3 of them seem like potential hits and 2 of them (Trauma and Next of Kin) could be returnables. No idea why channels keep giving Kay Mellor commmissions, she's awful.

Broadcast reporting that C4 and Gogglebox maker Studio Lambert are exploring the possibility of a teen version of the show, which could air on E4 or act as an All 4 exclusive.
If it wasn't overkill before, it will be soon. http://m.broadcastnow.co.uk/5110281.article |

The Missing lost a million viewers during the episode but should add them back over the next week. It does look like it'll settle at 5.5m which is Victoria level. I don't know how that compares to season 1. |

In other news, Viacom are coming under fire for the terms they are imposing on indies working with Channel 5: Quote:
Relations between Channel 5 and qualifying indies have soured in recent months, prompting complaints to Pact about the Viacom-owned broadcaster’s stance on terms of trade. http://m.broadcastnow.co.uk/5110288.article
Several qualifying producers, those not owned or backed by a broadcaster, have told Broadcast that the commercial broadcaster has been applying increasing pressure to sign deals that contravene the terms of trade, despite the government shoring up the legislation earlier this year. C5 is thought to have put pressure on producers to give away ancillary rights in excess of the 15% stipulated under the terms of trade legislation. The pressure is thought to have come from C5’s US owner, which is used to taking far more rights for its channels in the US and UK pay channels, rather than from Ben Frow and his programming team. “C5 is going great guns, it’s got a fantastic creative leader and a great team. Why do this? It’s a land grab. It’s immoral and it shouldn’t be going on,” said one indie chief. “The squeeze is for the production management team to get as much as they possibly can,” said another indie boss. “It’s all about holding onto the Nordics and Poland, because Viacom has channels in those territories and wants to be able to have content on those channels for free.” A C5 spokesperson told Broadcast that Viacom’s support has helped it “significantly increase our annual investment in original content”. “This year, we project homegrown programming will amount to a record two-thirds of our peaktime schedule. While like all commercial broadcasters we need to justify our increased investment in content, we’re keen to make sure that commercial deals work for everyone. We worked with more than 100 indies last year and we want their best ideas.” |

Well The Missing was great, if a little confusing. Should be the biggest drama launch this year I suspect.
Bake-Off lead in, little opposition. I predict a 6.5m rating. Bake-Off 10.9m |

Girlfriends at least has a different slant on the idea. They all could be really good and I'm sure ITV has noted that The Missing has shown that you can second season it. As did Broadchurch. I'll be more interested by the Durrells clones. Those lighter shows which contain humour and each episode has its own story. Dramas where you can miss an episode and not feel like you have not read six chapters of a book. |

I notice on DS its says a new series of 8 Out Of 10 Cats is back soon, but tbh, it feels like its been on all year. What with the spin-offs on so often. |
