The Rio Ceremony was too serious. It had no spectacle. The Olympic Ring reveal from trees was quite nice, the sculpture around the cauldron was beautiful although a blatant cheaper imitation of London's. But, where was the interpretation of the doves? Where was the jaw dropping colour, dance and entertainment? It was more like a Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony rather than an Olympic one.

And, more importantly, why did the BBC decide to give Rio 2016 its own ident, Glasgow 2014 its own ident yet London 2012 absolutely nothing?

I expected a much much bigger share than that.

The peak at 00:10 isn't great, it'd only been on 10 mins by then!

When the officials come out will they stitch together the pre and post 2am parts into one rating?

In recent years the BBC presentation department has moved in mysterious ways with no consistency to when they occasionally make more than the minimum of effort.

I actually expected better shares for the Olympics. And the other channels did decently. No one really embarrassed themselves.

Very poor for Rio. Suppose the time it went out was an issue. Wasn't a good ceremony, it has to be said.

Interestingly, I was looking for a comparison to last night's rating, and I think you'd find it difficult to find one given the timings of the previous Opening Ceremonies:

25/07/1992 - Barcelona - 17:15 to 21:00
19/07/1996 - Atlanta - 00:55 to 05:00
15/09/2000 - Sydney - 08:45 to 12:30
13/08/2004 - Athens - 18:35 to 22:00
08/08/2008 - Beijing - 12:45 to 16:45
27/07/2012 - London - 19:30 to 01:00
05/08/2016 - Rio - 23:40 to 04:00

Unless anyone can find a rating from 1996(!) anywhere, there really are no valid comparisons here.

Not a great peak for the Rio OC. A lot of people predicted mid 2M on the RPG. But 50% share is on the low side. Should have been in the 60s% or even low 70%.

I watched all of it and apart from the Cauldron being pretty and the tree olympic rings it was all a bit "meh".

And there's this from BARB - http://www.barb.co.uk/news/past-olympics-ceremonies/

Thought opening ceremony would have got a much better peak than that especially heading into the weekend where more ppl don't have to get up on a Saturday, but there really doesn't seem much hype for the Olympics this time around, maybe it's a bit too much sport for one summer.

I only watched for the first hour as to be fair it was pretty dull, kudos to those who lasted the whole thing.

Glad I didn't stay up for the Rio OC, the highlights on 'Olympic Breakfast' showed that I didn't miss much.

In which case, Rio did perfectly fine.

I didn't even know the Rio opening ceremony was on last night, often the case for me and one-off events on the main channels.

Watching it now and it's not exactly gripping entertainment, perhaps it would have been a spectacle in the stadium.

Sky plussed the commentary free version of the Opening Ceremony , will watch in chunks in spare moments.

So the exc.+1 figure is higher than series 3's inc.+1 figure. This series is trending up year on year which is good to see.

WHERE IS EVERYBODY????? (echo)..... (echo)...... (echo).............

Tonight ITV are showing Skyfall at 8pm and Carry On Girls at 11pm. I can't help thinking they would better off showing these two the other way round (given that Skyfall was in exactly the same slot last Sunday).

Is it not the case that ITV own the rights to the Carry On films and that it doesn't cost them anything when they show them? They should maybe try showing one or two of the films in prime-time. It's no worse that a lot of the prime-time fare they're showing across the summer and they might be pleasantly surprised at their performance.

I'm new to this forum, but looking back through previous threads there seemed to be so much more data, figures for every programme throughout the day and lots of channels, but that doesn't seem to be the case any more. Why is this? The only ratings not publicly available are from RayTings?

We used to have ratings roundups on digital spy via articles but they stopped for some reason.

So we can only reply on a few great members now. If those members are absent we are pretty f*****

Yes, people like NeilVW who used to post a lot of the ratings on this thread have now gone. Thankfully Ray Tings still posts some of the key ratings and we get bits and pieces from lewiep93, rzt, Steve Williams and Hassaan but other than that there really aren't many sources for ratings info on here anymore.

It's not that people are going elsewhere to discuss ratings- it's just that there are so little sources anymore so people stop posting on the thread. Case in point today when the thread dropped off page 1 of the TV Shows: UK board.

An improvement on BBC1's (all-new) line-up in this slot the previous week. And I imagine there's a fair bit of dipping in and out and channel-hoping to BBC4 and the Red Button channels amongst Olympic fans.
