I think Strictly results are up slightly on last week. Peaked at 10m as well which is higher than last week.

A relief for X Factor I think after the low of Saturday. I'm surprised it was up on last week. Hopefully it can hold that. Another excellent number for Strictly and it boosted the shows around it.

Decent start for Tutankhamun, I expected a lot worse. Was it any good? I imagine it's the sort of thing ITV will sell around the world as well. It's a solid start and wasn't far behind Poldark, which didn't really benefit from the lack of Victoria as ITV kept a reasonable amount of pressure on.”

If you didn't watch Poldark before you won't watch it now, mainly because it's episodic and you'll be behind in terms of story.

They were rubbish, that is all

Out by 1m for Poldark, predicted high for Strictly and low for XF.”

Fair enough! What did you have for Tutankhamun? I think that was the toughest to predict last night. I wonder if it could have been close to 5m without The Crystal Maze?

Won't be consolidated. Countryfile is inflated by early Strictly tune in. The 15 minute breakdown will be hilariously skewed.

Well I have to say, last nights ratings are suprising. But both channels are doing well, and its not just one dominating.

Tutankhamun was good, not excellent, but it should hold 4m or so. But tbh, I expected a much lower figure. Clearly the postive vibe around ITV's drama Victoria has allowed Tut to start well.

The X Factor back up, but that still doesn't take away from the poor rating yesterday.

BBC1 line-up showing how SCD can boost everything - Countryfile up 2m when before SCD arrived on Sunday.

If Corrie does improve a lot, I am all for it to return to Sunday. Only if it is back up in quality. Otherwise it'll just give Corrie a poor rating on Sunday.

Poldark didn't rise as much as I thought it would.

Fantastic. Certain this will go to a series, and become an almost year-long series.

So ITV should put The Durrells against CTM? Really?

I'd give The Durrells another year before putting in that position. At least.

The Grand, oops, sorry, The Halcyon is already getting pre-publicity so I'd expect that to play in January. I suspect BBC One drama won't have the boost this coming January that it had at the start of the year (War And Peace, Happy Valley) - and ITV should take advantage of those slots, rather than attacking established hits.

According to Sarah Hadland, Miranda is returning.

If true, I think will be a mistake. The last two specials at Christmas was pretty poor, and how much more can you really find funny about falling over?

Miranda was on Graham Norton and there was a jokey banter between her and Sam Neil saying that she would have loved him on the show. He said that he would do it.

I wonder if she has had some big names offering to do an episode with her which has spurred her on to return to it again.

So more people watch the results show of a singing competition than watched the actual singing?
It seems it's all depending on the competition. Anything decent on other channels and viewing figures go down.
I'm getting old. I remember when XF was first choice.

Ideally, that is how XF should be rating from now on.

6.37m (27.4%) exc. +1 for X Factor.

When singing shows are based around success with no forum to show what is or isn't popular in music, I can understand why their viewers are declining - no visible prize.”

Unfortunately, the state of music industry is linked to TXF and Pop Idol - and also to the same forces that dominate both: short-term thinking.

As in television (and life in general), the music industry has been increasingly dominated by accountants, looking at the bottom line and insisting that is the only thing that matters. And, of course, the books need to balance in any business, but in creative industries especially, there needs to be an element of artistic freedom and risk-taking. Hence the rise of David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Kate Bush and Prince (for instance) in the 70s - the modern equivalents of which either aren't given industry backup, or don't exist at all. Or record companies persisting with the likes of Simple Minds or U2, who didn't have immediate success (far from it).

Simons Fuller and Cowell changed that in the 90s with Pop Idol - instant profits for both the music and television industries. Ker-ching! Record companies became so enamoured with Fuller, then Cowell, that they diverted resources their way - and away from artists whose careers might require long term investment. Instead, the focus was on acts who were compliant, had no opinions and would not be in any way difficult or challenging. And it didn't matter if the public tired of them, because there was no shortage of others.

And the result is a singles chart bland beyond belief, with the focus on manufactured acts, EDM and grime-lite. So the TV shows that inspired a musical desert are left stranded in that desert. No wonder they're in decline and the comedy act on TXF is the one getting all the attention.

It was a tricky one to predict. I wouldn't have even been that surprised to see The Crystal Maze beat it. Looks like it dropped a bit over the slot but mainly in the first 15 mins - it was quite stable from 9.15 onwards.

As a big fan of the show I thought the Christmas Special was really poor. However, the NYD one was fantastic and a perfect final episode to the show. I feel it might be a little too soon for new Miranda unless there's a fantastic script. The show is more than just falling over you know

Yeah better for X Factor, there. Cowell and come could do a lot worse than admit its days of being in the same tier as Strictly are long gone and that ~6m viewers to win its slot is now a success for it.

Yes, I definitely wouldn't put The Durrells against CTM. Endeavour and Vera held up quite well against it last year, but The Halcyon seems likely to get a Sunday slot so that might scupper those plans. I'd be tempted to run Vera against Sherlock in the first few weeks of the year as even though they're both detectives, I suspect the audiences are quite different and Vera has been resilient before.

Then probably The Halcyon launching in late January. Possibly with a lead in from The Voice (and a cross channel one from CTM). Not sure what BBC1 have planned for that slot but with the hype that I'm sure The Halcyon will get it'd stand every chance at doing well.

I'd then pair up The Durrells with The Good Karma Hospital in the Spring. Endeavour would be squeezed in somewhere too.

I know they'll have Broadchurch in January and according to Twitter Loch Ness is airing then too. There's tough BBC1 competition in January though so they'll have to schedule carefully. I assume Midsomer and Benidorm will take two January slots as usual too. I'd expect to see Tennison early in the year as well, although it's looking quite busy.

It would have been a bigger surprise if Cold Feet didn't return. It's dong better than several series that have been recommissioned this year like The A Word.
