Then probably The Halcyon launching in late January. Possibly with a lead in from The Voice (and a cross channel one from CTM). Not sure what BBC1 have planned for that slot but with the hype that I'm sure The Halcyon will get it'd stand every chance at doing well.

I'd then pair up The Durrells with The Good Karma Hospital in the Spring. Endeavour would be squeezed in somewhere too.

I know they'll have Broadchurch in January and according to Twitter Loch Ness is airing then too. There's tough BBC1 competition in January though so they'll have to schedule carefully. I assume Midsomer and Benidorm will take two January slots as usual too. I'd expect to see Tennison early in the year as well, although it's looking quite busy.”

BIB - given that's from Tim 'Beowulf' Haines, are we expecting Saturday early evening for Loch Ness?

Anything for MOTD2? Abysmal Championship-esque line-up of matches yesterday and they were as dull as they sounded like they would be, too.

From the description, I'd say no.

I think for a drama title Loch Ness is a pretty eye catching one. I suspect it should get a good sample audience.

A drama set in Scotland is nice to see.

Only a smidge behind Saturday's SCD's 18-34 figures, with less than a third of total viewers.

We really need to see more of these figures to see the real ratings battleground, rather than the pathetic Countryfile beat XFactor nonsense!

It seems it's all depending on the competition. Anything decent on other channels and viewing figures go down.
I'm getting old. I remember when XF was first choice.”

Not really, I suspect 7m have watched XF by now. It's probably going to consolidate to 7.5m and the repeats will have added 500k.

It took me about 50 mins to watch last week's Saturday show and 30 mins on the Sunday one. Many won't watch it live.

True but X Factor never had to brag about younger viewers or catch up when it was getting 12/13m. All the fuss about young skewing/old skewing. Sometimes s programme's ratings can be so big that it gets a fair amount across several demos.

True Harry Hill fans will love it. Those who watched TV Burp for clips and didn't like the silliness will hate it.

I expect Yonderland (now in its third series) did well, straight after?

My wife watches both SCD and XFactor, but neither live and she 30x through loads.

She started the results shows at 8.30pm last night and we watched ad free Gogglebox after and were done and dusted by ten.

We'd be counted as fractions of viewers if we were BARBistas.

As in television (and life in general), the music industry has been increasingly dominated by accountants, looking at the bottom line and insisting that is the only thing that matters. And, of course, the books need to balance in any business, but in creative industries especially, there needs to be an element of artistic freedom and risk-taking. Hence the rise of David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Kate Bush and Prince (for instance) in the 70s - the modern equivalents of which either aren't given industry backup, or don't exist at all. Or record companies persisting with the likes of Simple Minds or U2, who didn't have immediate success (far from it).

Simons Fuller and Cowell changed that in the 90s with Pop Idol - instant profits for both the music and television industries. Ker-ching! Record companies became so enamoured with Fuller, then Cowell, that they diverted resources their way - and away from artists whose careers might require long term investment. Instead, the focus was on acts who were compliant, had no opinions and would not be in any way difficult or challenging. And it didn't matter if the public tired of them, because there was no shortage of others.

And the result is a singles chart bland beyond belief, with the focus on manufactured acts, EDM and grime-lite. So the TV shows that inspired a musical desert are left stranded in that desert. No wonder they're in decline and the comedy act on TXF is the one getting all the attention.”

The rise of boyband happened around 10 years before Pop Idol hit the charts. You can also look at Stock Aitken and Waterman in the mid-80s for the same genre.

The XF has given the UK 41 number 1s including the current one. It's also created the first UK pop act to smash USA since the Spice Girls (also a 90s act).

The charts's problem now is that it is dominated by streaming and so it's hard for unknown artists to crack them. The acts are dominated by the American urban genre where you have ActA featuring ActB.

The music industry wants names because they'll get the streams. The industry won't take the long-term investment decisions because records don't sell much in the digital era.

The rise of the internet is what changed the music industry, not the XF or American Idol.

The first paragraph screamed Fortitude. Then it went very Broadchurch.

It's the standard murder investigation over a series where the cop will probably have secrets and will clash with the local, normal- family officer.

It should do very well. The slow-moving murder investigation really does dominate UK drama now.

As I predicted, the audience simply didn't switch to Poldark after so many weeks. I suspect some watched the Crystal Maze, and I expect Tutankhamun will keep steady, if not rise, next week.

Yeah you can start watch SCD at 8:30 and finish watching XF by 10pm on a Saturday evening. I only skip the first five minutes of the Apprentice though as the rest is normally packed.

Incidentally, I have watched soccer matches on x6 and it works really well. Press play when appropriate. Good job I don't run a pub really.

The Halcyon is a big drama, much like Victoria. I think ITV's best option is to show a film premiere on NYD, then start Vera the following weekend. Vera did so well against CTM, that I suspect it could hld a strong 5m+ opposite Sherlock.

The Halycon needs to follow something solid at 8pm on the Sunday

Any predictions for the football tonight? I can't remember the last time there was so much hype around a Premier League game.

Cold Feet will most likely take a real hit tonight, although it should consolidate really well as usual.

I do that with golf sometimes, if I've been out and am a couple of hours behind.

Good thing about Sky Q is you can have a clear screen without the Sky+ blue circle!!

It's a 3 3/4 hour slot, so the average we get will be well below the actual match.

As you say, it should hit Cold Feet, but most Sky subscribers timeshift dramas by default.

Many may catch up, ad free, after the match. So it won't affect the overnights (except they'll be counted as 3/4 of a viewer!!)
