I do that with golf sometimes, if I've been out and am a couple of hours behind.

Good thing about Sky Q is you can have a clear screen without the Sky+ blue circle!!
I used to start watching the Olympics around 5 hours after it had started. The BBC did so many replays and recaps it was easy to catch up over the evening.

Ditto for the Ryder Cup. I can't watch golf live as you have adverts, lots of walking around and people thinking about shots.

Cricket and NFL have set plays every 30 seconds so it tends to be injuries and adverts to ffwd. I think there is only 20 minutes of actual tennis in the average men's match. In soccer you have around 2 minutes of action in a game. Depends how you define action of course.

Dramas are the best resistor to fast forwarding. You can't miss any of Agatha Christie.

Then probably The Halcyon launching in late January. Possibly with a lead in from The Voice (and a cross channel one from CTM). Not sure what BBC1 have planned for that slot but with the hype that I'm sure The Halcyon will get it'd stand every chance at doing well.

I believe after Sherlock it will probably be the new Tom Hardy drama Taboo,in the 9pm slot.Thats 8x60.

The Halcyon is a big drama, much like Victoria. I think ITV's best option is to show a film premiere on NYD, then start Vera the following weekend. Vera did so well against CTM, that I suspect it could hld a strong 5m+ opposite Sherlock.

The Halycon needs to follow something solid at 8pm on the Sunday
I agree. Do ITV want more programmes like Vera that attract the older viewer? Sherlock is a bad example because it's so huge but it clearly skews younger than Vera. ITV must like the 5m+ ratings that certain dramas can pull but do advertisers?

OAPs do have money. In fact, relatively speaking they've done very well these past 10 years.

I do hope we get some dramas set in the middle ages or even dark ages. They don't have to be about royals too. So this sort of story but set in 1580 for instance. Give it a wrinkle.

The second series of BBC2's The Last Kingdom will cover that.

I need to find the last few of season 1; I loved that. Yes it was a lot like Vikings but it was different enough.

There's a great drama to be made about Alfred, Edward, Æthelflæd and especially Æthelstan who is one of England's greatest monarchs (maybe the greatest).

The costumes are quite cheap too!

It's not a Downton sized hit, but is definitely a hit. And a returnable hit which will please ITV no end.

Hasn't done that in October since 2011, and when it did it was at the end of the month not the start. And also a rare occasion where it timeshifted higher than X Factor for a Saturday show...just. 1.40m to 1.36m.

I loved Victoria but do wonder how they will hold the ITV Sunday night period drama audience. Victoria has become Queen / had a crush on older man / found her Prince / married him / had a baby. What next? Apart from 8 more babies? There is a social history to tell particularly the 20 years Price Albert was alive but is that the stuff for soap opera fans.

So that's three comedy/dramas ITV have currently: Cold Feet, The Durrells, and Doc Martin.

So next year, if Doc Martin is the final series, will we being seeing it moved to Wednesday, with Cold Feet on the Monday?

There won't be room for it with Victoria taking Sundays sadly. I imagine next Autumn might be:

Sunday: Victoria
Monday: Cold Feet
Wednesday: Marcella
Thursday: Doc Martin

Pretty solid and more variety than this year. There will probably be a couple of other bits too.

How are you finding The X Factor live shows James? I know you enjoyed the auditions but not the six chair challenge.

There's an Agatha Christie adaptation, The Witness for the Prosecution with Kim Cattral and one of two MBBs specials, the first Sherlock is on New Year's Day.

Definitely not. Do BBC1 have a 30 minute animation this year?
If so they will probably go:

3.10 Frozen
4.45 BBC News
5.00 Animation
5.30 Doctor Who
6.30 Strictly Come Dancing
7.45 Call The Midwife
9.00 EastEnders
10.00 Mrs Brown's Boys
10.35 Michael McIntyre

Pretty similar to last year. As for ITV...

3.10 Despicable Me 2
5.15 ITV News
5.30 Love of Dogs
6.30 Emmerdale
7.30 Coronation Street
8.30 Birds of a Feather
9.30 Blankety Blank

Maybe. I prefer the idea of Blankety Blank on Boxing Day but couldn't think of what else to put there.

I imagine the 3.10pm film will be Monsters University and they'll save Frozen for next Christmas although it's highly possible that Frozen gets Christmas Day and Monsters University gets NYD or Christmas Eve.

The only other animated film from 2013/14 that I can see getting a plum is How to Train Your Dragon 2 but that might be Boxing Day. On the live action front, they have Maleficent, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy but I have a feeling they'll probably save Guardians for Easter.

Do you know BBC1 have these films? Maleficent should do well.

It would be good if ITV aquired some animations, instead of showing the same over repeated films over and over again.

Frozen will be big. If ITV had that at 3.10pm it would have boosted their entire schedule.
