Considering the amount of hype around Emmerdale this week, I certainly expected the big episode to top 7m.
ITV daytime as you'd expect was essentially wall-to-wall adverts for it as well - I flicked onto ITV twice briefly during the course of the day and they were doing features on it both times on different magazine shows.
It just seems much harder work than it used to be to make a real significant difference to the soap ratings. No doubt it'll return to its usual numbers within a week.”
With Emmedale's spectacular set pieces it usually goes like this.
Something will crash into something and a person or person's life will hang in the balance, or something will explode and a person or person's life will hang in the balance or something will crash into something and explode and a person or person's life will hang in the balance. It's the same old same old. Surprise me. When they say Emmerdale has a big set piece, that doesn't surprise me. And if it's a BBBBIIIIIIIIGGGG week in soap they should be looking to be closer to 8m in overnights. The viewers are around now because we have cold Autumn evenings. Why haven't more viewers turned up? Maybe they will tonight but so far ratings look like they usually do but with a little spike. Last year they were closer to these numbers on a regular non game changing, earth shattering, things will never be the same week in soap.
This big soap week on ITV doesn't feel like a big soap week, it feels like a regular soap week with a few more crashes and bangs. It's underwhelming and then there is EastEnders which is sub underwhelming. Grant's return wasn't big, Peggy's return didn't do that much either.
Perhaps I'm hard to please but I'm not impressed.
What's left to blow up now? Thermonuclear devices? Suicide bombers? Spontaneous human combustion? Samsung Galaxy Note 7s? Microwave meals? Cup-a-Soups?
