"2 hour finale of Sky Atlantic's #TheNightOf watched by 50k. Adapted brilliantly from BBC's #CriminalJustice. Congrats to writer Peter Moffat."

Thanks for this. I don't know whether that is good or bad for sky Atlantic but what I will say is 'the night of' is easily the best drama I've seen on TV all year. Outstanding.

The rating isn't great but the drama was, as was the BBC original.

Confirmed that for the third year running Viacom will be simulcasting the MTV EMAs on Channel 5. That's on November 6.

Lineup looks weaker than last year though and that did less than half a million on the main channel if memory serves, so probably up against it again.

Monday 4th January.
That says it all. We're in October and the big three soaps aren't hitting 7/8m regularly in overnight ratings.

The whole series was available on demand (and free of of ad breaks) since August.

We did one episode a night over a week.

Absolutely brilliant drama, it even surpassed the UK version. BBC Worldwide co produced, so some of our Sky subs get back to the BBC.

50k in the overnights for a show that many could have already seen weeks ago is pretty good.

This big soap week on ITV doesn't feel like a big soap week, it feels like a regular soap week with a few more crashes and bangs. It's underwhelming and then there is EastEnders which is sub underwhelming. Grant's return wasn't big, Peggy's return didn't do that much either.

Perhaps I'm hard to please but I'm not impressed.
Perhaps you're more of a traditionalist who feels good stories, well told, will always win the day over gimmicks for a week here or there. Judging by the ratings, there are a lot more people around like you! I do feel the people in charge of soaps have just basically given up, or maybe soaps aren't the rite of passage for the best talent working their way up and benefiting from a training ground they once were? It's funny how good telly still brings the numbers in, a show about baking can get astonishing numbers whatever time of the year they put it out. The excuses from TV executives about many shows is boring - they need to up their game.

4th January 2016 was the last time it had over 7m including +1 in the overnights.

From DS:
"Emmerdale brought in 6.97m (32.1%) at 7pm on ITV and 204k (0.9%) on +1 as Emma told Ross to take baby Moses - the show's best figure in just over 14 months. Emmerdale hasn't been as high since October 20, 2014."

I honestly don't mind an explosion or big stunt, EastEnders could do with one to liven it up a bit. But a soap doing them regularly diminishes their impact with me as does a soap repeating storylines. Emmerdale is doing a crash...again! EastEnders has Max having an affair...again.

Soaps plod away doing just enough to keep their diminishing fanbases happy while turning away other viewers. Viewers are out there, some programmes know how to get them while others don't. And the ones that don't keep coming up with excuses rather than solutions.

I thought Emmerdale was great last night but I did think it would touch 7m too. I always feel a lot of effort is put into Emmerdale, and it feels like Corrie is treading water far more and taking its viewers for granted.

Having said that, it's hard to know how soaps can pull in massive casual viewers again as everything has been done, stunt wise and story wise. I guess the next big figures of 9 million + is when all 3 soaps reach another big birthday and they do some live episodes again.

Channel 5 had a mixed night, Nightmare Neighbours did fine but On Benefits and Me and My Affair did poorly. I think On Benefits should be axed, they have much better shows that could do over 1m,

ITV could get both soaps over 7m with one storyline. Maybe over 8m. I've no idea why ITV won't pull the trigger on it.

Unless they're saving it for a later date.

Thanks for these. So after all the talk of it didn't make 7m, the second episode actually hit 7.00m bang on. Emmerdale has been brilliant this week. I hope it can hold onto some of these extra viewers as it's certainly firing on all cylinders at the moment.

As for people expecting it to reach 8m last night, that was never going to happen. The last time Emmerdale was 8m+ was on Wednesday 17th October 2012 when it averaged 8.8m for it's live Anniversary episode.

Obviously everyone hates Emmerdale round here with people falling overthemselves to stick the boot in because it has been decided that 7m is the target and it fell short by a small margin.

Don't make out its all explosions, there are 312 episodes a year, 311 don't have an explosion.

The fact the number of posts criticising it greatly outnumbers those who praised it says a lot.

I believe it hit 8m in October 2013 as well.

Edit: Yes, it did for the big siege week. Can't believe it was so long ago! http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/coro...-on-wednesday/

I've mentioned it before. The one storyline would crossover in to both shows. Emmerdale meets Corrie would be something genuinely significant.

And if they're smart, it would only be a solid storyline for the crossover. Just the nature of it would pull in the interest.

The next time they do it they'd need a much bigger story. Imagine both shows doing big stories that then collide.

On a slightly related subject..

Oops! Missed that! That was a brilliant week.

Corrie upped the ante tonight. A lot happened that wasn't leaked. Hopefully we can have more of this now Kate Oates is in charge.
