I think what he's saying is that you don't see the kind of talented, smart celebrities they have on BBC quiz programmes slumming it on ITV, isn't he? Seems like a fair enough assessment to me!

It appears that older people will always stay loyal to the BBC or watch it almost out of habit regardless of the quality. XF and Meet The Parent's ratings have been unjust

BBC1 do well in January with pretty little effort. Lottery quizzes can get up to 5m, and MBB rpts the same.
This is especially likely if ITV are showing very little, or a young skewing show like Take Me Out. I think Let It Shine will appeal to those viewers who watched the ALW shows. |

Absolutely. I loved the ALW shows. Looking forward to Gary's show in January. Why? Because he is a credible musician/composer/singer.

I wonder if you felt that way when he was on that ITV show X Factor.
![]() See Dan, that's the difference between the BBC talent shows and their ITV counterparts...the BBC ones have credibility...and the viewers flock to them in their millions. From The Apprentice to Strictly...from Bake Off to Gary's Let It Shine and the ALW shows... to Gareth Malone's 'Choir' shows. By the way Dan, Gareth has a new series starting next week on BBC Two. You ought to tune in. You will then see what's wrong with ITV's Ex-Factor and the other Cowell formats. |

And not sure why you've put Gary's show on there when it hasn't even aired yet (I will give it a try, I like Gary). Also, you're suggesting that viewers don't flock to entertainment shows on other channels in their millions? BGT wants a word! I've seen your other posts around the forum, you really are way too passionate about the BBC. There are so many things to be worried about in life and the BBC is not one of them. |

This clearly has an impact on many viewers choices of viewing. Btw The Apprentce doesn't have credibility. Its as trashy as TXF. |

Do you know how long the opening ep is? Last year was 1hr 50min. The last few years have been 90minutes. I think it would be better if they kept it 90minutes. |

Nah thanks, I tune in to what's entertaining, not just what's considered 'upmarket' or 'educational' or whatever else. Just because people on BBC music shows have spent 10 years studying in some elite music college & can now play Beethoven fluently doesn't mean I'll enjoy the programme or their performance.

It will be interesting to see what BGT does next year. Again, in my opinion, it suffers the same issues as other ITV so-called 'talent' shows. The BBC is hugely important for our country on all sorts of levels, and yes, it is right to support it and fight for it. ITV on the other hand... |

'...Entertaining...' even if said vehicle has no credibility? Don't you see/don't you want to see what's wrong with the Ex-Factor/why people like me will NEVER give it the time of day?

The BBC attracts a large older viewer following, which is why most of the BBC programming skews so old, and hold up well.
The BBC also has the advatage on no adverts. This clearly has an impact on many viewers choices of viewing. Btw The Apprentce doesn't have credibility. Its as trashy as TXF. On the adverts, ITV knew what it was entering into back in the day when it chose to base it's model on advertising. They didn't have to go with ads did they. The Apprentice has loads more credibility than The Ex-Factor. I give you the 'judging panel' for a start. At least you have people on 'the panel' from the world of business passing judgement on others attempting to enter into that field. |

I don't watch it, but Yippee! It'll be nearly Christmas once it's over, so thanks ITV, another marker on my Christmas Countdown.

You are right. You know the countdown to Christmas begins the minute it's over. Like you, I won't be giving it the time of day. I have no patience with it.

BIB...is this not mildly offensive? You imply that it is only oldies pushing zimmers who watch BBC One. I am no where near that age. I value and appreciate the quality and higher standards provided by the Beeb. ITV could (and should) learn an awful lot from the BBC. Poaching BBC talent is not enough. It's about the tone, the content and the credibility of that content.

At least you have people on 'the panel' from the world of business passing judgement on others attempting to enter into that field. The BBc obviously has its younger shows: TA, EastEnders etc. but its skew towards older viewers is much greater than ITV. That is why the BBC can hold up so well opposite ITV big hitters. I do agree, the BBC has plenty of quality programming (I watch a lot on BBC programmes), and it does have the greatest advantage out of all the channels. But then, ITV has quality programming as well. You can't brand the entire ITV network trash. |

No I didn't imply that ONLY older viewrs watch the BBC. But as an example, BBC1 Sunday line up (Countryfile, AR and SCD) over 4m (50% of total viewers) are 65+. These are facts, not made up.

I think ITV do need to take more risks. Their over reliance on a handful of hits - soaps, BGT and XF is causing it terminal damage. Yet, it still produces gems that make me enjoy watching ITV again. I'd like a little more variety on ITV, but I do concede that it has found it's audience and that is all it now caters for. As long as it keeps the advertisers happy!

Ash, enough. This is not the thread for your BBC supporting posts. It's a thread established over a period of a decade where television programmes of all channels are celebrated or criticised based on their ratings. The BBC is important to YOU, but on here, the whole of UK broadcasting is important. There are those who prefer BBC to ITV and C5 to C4, but they don't lecture contributors on the merits of the broadcaster they have chosen as a favourite. Your BBC propoganda is best suited to the Broadcasting threads.
I will say at this juncture, well done to BBC Strictly. The ratings for last night's show don't surprise me. It was a brilliant show. |
