Morecambe and Wise Ratings 1970-1983

Excellent Lewie!

Morecambe and Wise had a lot of momentum in their early years at Thames.

I was thinking 0.8m minimum.

Next UCL rights auction will be fascinating. Surely BT won't be able to justify the kind of sum they bid last time.

Not those ratings either, unless they have seen a uptake in services like broadband.

To be honest, I doubt last week's episode being abandoned halfway through did much for the long term health of this series.

If nobody else has got it yet... 3.01m.”

So competition from ITV, does impact BBC1 on Tuesday. Is it any wonder so many dramas do well on BBC1 on this day. They usually face nothing from ITV, but TPofBA have shown something worth watching can knock BBC1.

Put something decent on and you get viewers. ITV have made Tuesday a factual dumping ground like BBC1 have with Monday. Piss easy to get a decent drama rating on the night...as long as it's good. Ordinary Lies is VERY ordinary. Eben with no competition it struggled.

The current news set up with regional at 6 and national at 6.30pm works for ITV plus they are very unlikely to change what is a solid daytime schedule by pushing everything back by 45 minutes to show stuff at 6.30pm which likely wouldn't rate as well

I went back looking but found no trace of discussion.

When was it discussed?

0.367m difference and Emmerdale probably higher when tape checked so I'd say the "nonsense" is ongoing.

Don't think it's intended to Challenge anything. It's filler for the week between Pride of Britain and the England football match.

New Lives in the Wild is a solid performer and I think 5 is really benefitting from Channel 4 having really weak programming in certain slots, I expect GPs will be up tonight since Bake Off isn't on. The Yorkshire Vet did a hit but that was to expected since the ITV competition was 3 times more viewer than usual

I do think there are certain shows that should be axed like On Benefits and maybe Police Interceptors since Traffic Cops is coming and fills the same role.

Media polls say far more about the kind of people that complete media polls than they do about their subjects generally speaking. And are you really suggesting that BBC commissioning should be run at the whim of a few hundred tweeters and DS forumites?! The word 'exceptionally' is more than a tad hyperbolic in terms of the reception. It warmed a few heart cockles undoubtedly but TV critics were by no means as impressed as has been suggested. In fact I've yet to find a serious newspaper that could be said to have enthused, something which certainly cannot be said of 'Motherland' which they more or less universally loved.

I see it will be branded "All New Traffic Cops" on air which is a bit tacky for my liking. It's not as if BBC One is repeating old episodes at the moment. I don't much like the trend of "New:" preceding programme titles that seemingly everyone is now doing on the EPG either, but this is even worse.

Should do better than Police Interceptors which always rates solidly but seems to have an absolute maximum audience of 1.2m.

The C5 schedule is shaping up nicely as we inch closer to winter. Will be interesting to see how Jack Taylor performs this time around. It's been ages since the last series. Think we're getting it before Ireland, too.

My hot takes..

ITV have really messed up putting shows against SCD rather than 8pm on Tuesdays, especially now they have a show on Wednesday.
Ordinary Lies is like Paranoid and Level and shows that drama is harder work on a weekday than on a Sunday.
Not even 750k for the ManCs v Barca is feeble. Yes Arsenal and Celtic stole viewers but UEFA and their corporate sponsors can't be happy. The door is open for ITV or C5 to do a deal on the new rights.

I've posted this before but here's my take on the top 30 most watched of all time which includes films, sport, etc. I haven't included BBC 1 shows from the 1979 ITV strike period as the list would be full of shows from that period (unfair maybe?). I said on Monday that these lists are often polarising as people shout "well what about World Cup 66?". These are SINGLE showings only and only one highest rated edition per series. Of course, there's no set ratings method pre-1981 so I guess there'll always be debates on this.

Royal Variety most watched show of all time? WHAT? According to an article from November 1967 in The Stage Archive it is, was amazed at that one. It had 11.6m homes which multiplied by 2.2 (how the BFI convert these figures) equates to 25.52m. And it is interesting that the other list and the BFI have the 1965 Royal Variety as the highest. More star guests than 1967?

It really is incredible to see which shows were popular.
