True and this situation that the BBC enjoys has taken years to get to. ITV has chased younger viewers and driven millions away by stuffing their weekdays with soaps.

Lygo decides to show similar dramas on consecutive nights and chops the legs off new LE formats. Oh and he wants more Corrie.

Hardly surprising BBC1 is the default option for millions.
Bingo!

She's still the biggest in the world, last album has sold over 10 million is US alone. Which X factor winner has achieved that?
TBF DanR was being jokey (I hope!) and noone compares to Adele.
1D did have two of the top five LPs of the year in America but they weren't XF winners.

It's fairly clear I was talking about the UK, but I guess I should have seen your spin coming.
I think she's quite big in the UK as well...

Yep, she's only a small act in the U.K.

Geez, you don't give up do you? I'm guessing you have the Adele calendar and annual by your bed at night too.

Look at the charts right now, and for recent weeks. This is what I'm talking about (though I think you know this full well )

Nope, not even a fan, just pointing out she's one of the biggest acts in the world and isn't owned by X factor. Wasn't her last single released last year? Wouldn't be in the charts now

BBC News is on before Pointless, which is default viewing fr those older viewers who watch SCD.

BBC News at 5.30pm is often 3.5m+, so Pointless has a good starting audience to grow from.
I knew you'd come back with this one. You can't help yourself. You're always having a dig at the BBC.

Do you think that if The Getaway Car or Can't Touch This or Five Star Family Reunion had been on at 6pm last night, they would have averaged 4.8m across the hour? No chance. The first two would probably have had half that.

People watch Pointless because they enjoy it, not because they've dropped the remote control down the back of the sofa.

I know that. The weekdays editions show that it is popular. I do not suggest otherwise.

What I am saying, is that the celeb editions on weekends are boosted by leading into SCD due to a similar skew. As is Countryfile. Both are popular, but both gain from the SCD lead in.

I don't doubt The Getaway Car would be less, but these are flops and are aimed mostly towards a younger audience and so wouldn't skew similarly to SCD bulk audience.

I think you've gone too high for Planet Earth 2 and too low for X Factor James. But I'm just guessing like you.
It's weird, my Facebook is full of comment's on it, and I don't normally see much discussion on TV shows- It's got a bit of an event feel about it so I could see it happening, especially as it's inheriting a 10m lead in

Last nights @bbcstrictly was watched by a peak audience of 10.7m, with a 46.2% audience share and average of 9.7m.Most watched show on TV

X Factor had 5.6m according to Richard Osman.
BBC Strictly was fab-u-lous on Saturday night. Awesome show. The best show on the box. Not surprised it pulled in 10 million. Well done BBC Strictly.

Absolutely marvellous TV, those snakes, nightmares coming.
It was utterly stunning. Awesome cinematography and soundtrack. I predict 8 million for the overnights. Thank you BBC.

Planet Earth II debuted with 9.2m last night #tvratings

Good god! That is a stunning rating! I know people will say it had a big lead in, etc but that is a brilliant rating. May well timeshift to over 11m!

Richard Osman ‏@richardosman 18s18 seconds ago
10.2m for #Strictly last night, followed by an incredible 9.2m for #planetearth2 . #XFactor held up well with 6.5m.

Massive for Planet Earth!

Love seeing huge ratings like that. I wonder how low X Factor went...

I thought it would get 8m at least. The hype on social media was huge amongst young people as well.

But didn't expect it to be that big . Fantastic rating.

Strictly Come Dancing: The Results was the most watched show on TV yesterday with a peak audience of 11m. Average 10.1m and 42.5 share.

X Factor had 6.5m which is very good considering it was up against Planet Earth.

6 weeks. I think it may well be Planet Earth back in 2006. Frozen Planet had nearly 8m in the overnights 5 years ago.

Fantastic for PE especially when you consider XF had two of the biggest artists around on the show.

Still amazed by that Planet Earth rating.

Credit where it's due, X Factor held up really well. Either Planet Earth didn't dent it or it would have got a boost under normal circumstances. Not sure which is the case but I can't think of anything else ITV have that could have got 6.5m up against Planet Earth. Particularly with what I imagine was a rubbish lead-in.

Amazing for Strictly, this is the time last year when it started posting 10m+ overnights too. Wonder how low Magician and Rockers were.

Strong Ratings for all the big shows last night. SCD results over 10m 😱 Better for X Factor I knew it would be up as Sundays are bigger than Saturdays to be honest these days.. Planet Earth over 9m that's an amazing achievement.
