5.8m for both Countryfile and Poldark. Poldark had a 26.3% share.

Planet Earth II debuted with 9.2m last night #tvratings

Good god! That is a stunning rating! I know people will say it had a big lead in, etc but that is a brilliant rating. May well timeshift to over 11m!

Richard Osman ‏@richardosman 18s18 seconds ago
10.2m for #Strictly last night, followed by an incredible 9.2m for #planetearth2 . #XFactor held up well with 6.5m.
OMG re Planet Earth II - that's brilliant and well-deserved. That sequence with the snakes and the baby iguanas is still lodged in my head …

I didn't see that rating coming for Planet Earth 2!

I did say though that to be big Planet Earth 2 would have to bring extra viewers to the slot rather than hurt X Factor. It looks like that's what happened.

5.8m for both Countryfile and Poldark.
Good for Poldark, which made good use of the bigger lead-in for its finale. Countryfile looks a bit lower than normal.

I think a lot of same day timeshifting might have gone on last night, which makes next week will be interesting with I'm a Celebrity also in the mix and a new drama on BBC1. I'd expect both PE2 and XF to dip a bit next week for that reason (unless PE2 gets a lot of word of mouth that sends it even higher).

Good for The X Factor, it's a distinguished alternative to Plsnet Earth 2.
I'd say that was the other way round.

Fantastic for PE especially when you consider XF had two of the biggest artists around on the show.
Viewers didn't have to choose, they could've watched both.

PE2 did amazingly well. I wouldn't be surprised if it had a huge time shift, as its big office chat. Could even rise at some point during the series. if it is a six week series, the final episode will air the same night as The X Factor final.

XF is still awful - 6 million... was only six years ago 13m would watch the results! Bring back Cheryl! Nicole is a horrid person.

Will be interesting to see what SCD ends with - could be one of the biggest finales!

Countryfile was 75 minutes long from 6 last night children in need special, so not a normal episode.

I hadn't realised that. Countryfile grows rapidly across the show because of the SCD lead-out, so not a surprise the average dipped last night with the earlier start.

Of course, but great that such quality TV won the day. It may not of a few years ago.

Well done to BBC1 for storming away with the night again, especially with two blockbuster ratings.

I wonder though, how many scenes were fixed during PE. Wouldn't be the first time an Attenborough led show conned the audience would it?

Thanks Ray.

Big hitters on BBC1 and ITV are hurting other channels. Operation Gold Rush on BBC2 ahead of Humans in overnight ratings. Another thing I didn't expect.

So BBC1 and ITV had nearly 16m between them at 8pm last night. Always good to see more than one channel get a big number at the same time. Remind me of the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode, that got a huge audience but XF held up well. Shows appealing to different audiences can sit well together.

ITV's commercial share must have been very nice at 8pm too, keeping the bean counters happy.

Also, very poor rating for Humans. Looks like the bubble has burst with this one.

I could see over 8m for Planet Earth tonight to be honest. I'm gonna guess

Planet Earth - 8.1m
The X Factor - 5.6m
I was 1.0m off for both shows (but the closest on the thread for Planet Earth II just sayin') 🏅🏅🏅

Great for SCD and The X Factor did very well to do 6.5m against that 9.2m for Planet Earth. Nice to see high ratings.

Shame about Humans. Will we get its Ep1 consolidated number today?

How comes Planet Earth 2 is so huge? If I remember correctly, other recent Attenborough series haven't been that huge, so why is this one so hyped? Going to have to catch up now!

And that is a really low rating for Humans, was not expecting this kind of drop, it doesn't deserve it

But you had heard of Melvin Odoom ?

Him and Danny Mac were my unknowns.
I'd caught a bit of Bang on the Money and also saw Ore Oduma doing vignettes on the Olympics. So I recognised them though didn't know their names.

Superb for PEII. No channel can compete when the BBC have this many big shows in one line-up.

It does show that PEII was most definately event TV.

SCD took advantage of ITV being sub 2m at 7pm I imagine. And Poldark got viewer new viewers for is final episode?

Thanks for posting the numbers Ray. A poor evening for both C4 and C5 and an amazing one for BBC1.

Do you have the excluding HD numbers for Next Great Magician and Tutankhamun?

Can see the haters wanting to hobble the BBC with even more restrictions.

Just seen that The Next Great Magician got 2.55m (11.1%) excluding HD and +1.

Looks like it will have been low 3s all in, which isn't all that bad in that slot.
