What are the predictions for the two unpredictable shows tonight - Planet Earth II and I'm A Celeb?

I'm pretty certain PE2 will push past 10m. And I think IAC might just sneak past 10m.

Not sure about IAC. At first thought it's hard to imagine it being up YOY but then, I think, it has a shorter runtime this year (?) which could help figures.

What did IAC launch with last year?

The creator Barry Devlin has said it will be an ongoing series (if successful) .

It couldn't have a much harder start, the IAC opener will be one of its top 2 or 3 ratings I would imagine-including some casuals that might have dipped into the drama instead.

But IIRC, last year it ran over by 5-mins and didn't actually end until 10.55pm

I like Russell Howard but he's not primetime material and I think putting him in a light entertainment would suffocate him creatively.

Millionaire is old hat, what was unique about it back in 1998 isn't unique anymore and it ended at the right after a very successful run. I'd rather see a new gameshow format rather than dusting off old ones.

Last night JR was on against the Festival Of Remembrance which, although it rated about a million higher than Casualty has been rating recently, probably skews very old leaving the young audience looking for something else to watch. And it's 9.30 on a Saturday night and if Five Star Family Reunion can get 3m+ against X Factor, JR should be able to in prime time against the Festival Of Remembrance.

Is JR now bringing one guest on at a time but leaving them on stage when the next guest comes on. Because Parky was doing that back in the 1970s and it probably makes for a better show than bringing each guest on one at a time on their own. Just so long as he doesn't have a dimwit producer who suggests putting the host's chair in the middle. Because that's what happened to Russell Harty in the 1980s. Which meant he had his back to half his guests at any one time. Which is why Grace Jones thumped him one.

Various people could do a TV review show to varying success, but nobody could do "TV Burp" except Harry Hill. It was the unique surreal humour and observations that made it what it was. Plus it was always pitched the criticism at exactly the right level, not a love in, but not a downright TV critic style slating.

Until Harry Hill runs out of money and has to do either this, or I'm a Celeb, it won't happen.

I can see WWTBAM coming back at some point, but not yet, give it 5 or 10 years and the nightly event format might work again.

Of course the relatively unique format on Jonathan Ross was the visible "green room" so while the guests were not on the sofa together, they were still seem before an after and could chip in when asked, something that wouldn't happen on Parkinson.

Yes I think when that million was won it marked a sea change in attitude towards game shows. I don't think there is much public appetite now for seeing that kind of money won. ITV scored for decades with game shows offering luxury goods and comparatively considerable cash prizes and that was part of the draw-its ironic now that the biggest cash prize is the £100,000 on the BBC Lottery shows-but again its not driving the interest like it did.

Yes, that's the style Ross now uses. His hero Letterman did it and Aspel and Company used to do it with the audience donutting the stage. Ross needs a new set but the show is alive again. These increased ratings should lead to more Hollywood guests.

Why won't Harry Hill do Burp but will do Tea Time?

Indeed, all the things people used to slag off Ross over are still occurring on his show, the silly games, the same questioning style, having his mates on every series, but now he's rating well, it's acceptable again!



The problem with those shows was that besides the small number of household names, you'd have very obscure comedians appearing who would struggle to get a place on a Channel 4/BBC2 panel show and might just get a spot on one on ITV2. Not prime time BBC1 material.

It was obvious a twenty something edgy comedian straight from Edinburgh Fringe, doing straight forward stand up wouldn't appeal to over 60s watching BBC1.

Great results show tonight for X Factor. Nice for Ant and Dec to choose the theme. I think it will get a boost from IAC personally.

Millionaire pretty much killed off the bright and breezy game show where contestants would play a silly game and win household goods. When cold hard cash was being given away people seemed less interested in contestants winning the Showcase Showdown.

Tonight's a difficult one to call. I'm a Celebrity is a bit of a spanner in the works for the 8pm shows (mainly X Factor) due to the VOSDAL impact. Could Planet Earth rise? Then there's BBC1's new drama. Some predictions:

Strictly - 10.3m
Planet Earth - 9.5m
My Mother/Strangers - 5m

Magician - 3m
X Factor - 6m
I'm a Celebrity - 9.5m

Yes and every quiz had to have big graphics on screen, blue lights and the audience barely visible.

Now I think the old shows would work again. Whats old is new. Rarely does anyone win more than £20k on a gameshow. They were doing that on itv twenty years ago. The trick is to have the gamble risk like Tipping Point, Bullseye and Take Your Pick.

In the 80s Sun Bingo gave away £50k prizes. People still refuse to gamble £3k on Tipping Point.
