I'm sure I read somewhere that Holby's overnight figure includes those watching BBC1 in Scotland 8-9pm on a Tuesday when BBC Scotland are showing River City. Holby goes out in Scotland at 2245 on a Tuesday or Wednesday depending on what else is on.

I gather it'd be a 40 episode run so it'll run for 8 weeks initially.

I'm sure it'll do well. The over 65s who watch BBC One on Saturday nights 52 weeks a year will lap it up, plus it'll no doubt be sandwiched in between Pointless Celebrities and a lottery quiz.

Talking bout Pointless, it was quite disgraceful that the episode on Saturday was a repeat, in peak viewing season.

I imagine it'll likely launch Jan/Feb time when audiences are bigger.

Completely agree. Next couple of weeks as well. Don't know why as they still have a whole bank of new celeb ones to show.

It's " money " and budgets, the LF freeze and added costs are beginning to bite.

BBC1 has a set budget, they would run more New shows if they could but, can't budget for it. Michael Macintyre is new, so increased costs.

Still open all hours gets a repeat run soon as well.

New Pointless can be held back to January to run with Let it shine.

I think River City should be networked, if we are getting repeats in prime time, then it should be used, and putting Holby on post news in Scotland is a waste.

Maybe a catch up nightly repeat run on BBC2 then BBC1 try it.

I understood second week of January was muted. They do not want to be exact and tell the BBC but post New Year.

Here's a question. When was the last time we had three unique programmes breaking 10 million on the same night? Must be going back a few years.

Wow! What a set of numbers. HUGE, HUGE, HUGE night last night. Strictly hitting a series high. Both parts of the final last year averaged 11.0m so this years final might be closer to 12.0m at this rate.

I thought Planet Earth II might grow, but not by 1.4m. That's insane. And despite this, XF only lost 100k against last week. PEII has definitely brought in extra TV viewers to that slot.

IAC returned way above my prediction. 10.7m is a right result and fully deserved. It's off to a super start and that's it's best launch rating since 2013.


Poor Humans. That's awful and such a shame. Launching in Q4 compared to Summer last year is a completely different ball game and it's really suffering.

It just shows, great shows can pull in viewers, we have come to accept mediocrity in ratings, that 4/5 million is good, 2 million is bad. Accept Sunday at 8 pm, only six million will watch a programme. Call the midwife shows big numbers are waiting for a good show, now changing things about with Planet Earth 2 shows an audience is there and mediocre ratings are not acceptable on Sunday evenings.

XF hogs prime slots at the weekend but doesn't get the viewers thought the turnstiles, same as Antiques roadshows which should move to a spring/summer slot now.

I've no problem if a channel shows repeats in primetime. I'd rather they didn't but if the audience watches it then sobeit.
However, you're right that it's a waste of money to not show programmes like River City in the rest of the country. You can't cry poverty if you then leave your windows open when you've got the heating on.

But the Glaswegian accent is strong compared to other parts of Scotland. I assume they cope. Or simply soften the accents like they seem to have done with Emmerdale.

Many people used subtitles 888 for The Wire.

Out of interest, does Pointless cost more as it's bought from from an indy (one of Murdoch's), compared to The Chase which is made in house by ITV Studios?

Does having a studio audience add much to Pointless's budget?

Jim Ross said that World of Sport wrestling was filmed as a two hour show and is a pilot with a hope of bringing it back. Now he didn't make clear if he meant WoSW back or WoS itself. With itv4 having the horse racing next year, I guess WoS could return.

The show was filmed with 9 cameras in the Voice's Manchester studio. Over 80,000 people applied for tickets!
It's going to be shown on a key Holidays date. Ross said Xmas Eve, Day and NYDay were all possibles. The ITV suits took him to Chinatown and told him over dinner that they have high hopes for WoSW.

I'd imagine it would go to itv4 long-term but I could see how itv might love the younger and male demos at 4pm on a Saturday. It would certainly bring a potentially significant boost to itv4.

Well an audience is no cost, bar security and health and safety? That spread over say recording five or so a day.

I think you missed the point, not per programme, but per new series, the BBC just ordered 110 new Pointless shows, that's to cover 250* nights shown.

* typically not on Wimbledon, but also not Olympic Games - once in four years, maybe celebrity repeats at Christmas. So 230 -250 nights.

The BBC rely on Pointless too often. There is a reason why ITv have so mant LE flops. They commission more.

If something flops on BBC1 on Saturday, Pointless is drafted in, and a rpt of MBB. Its safe and they know the audience will watch come what may.

The Getaway Car and Can't Touch This were attempts at new LE shows, but the audience they were aimed at don't usually watch BBC1 and so it aliented the older audience, who usually make up BBC TV audiences, and this was left with a low overall rating. And that is why we have so many lottery shows. The audience will watch.
