*Pens OpEd for the Guardian* I agree that in 2016 it would not kill the show. But it might see off some of the BBC audience who I suspect are rather old fashioned. Doctor Who probably has a younger audience that would suffer less from apoplexy. |

Just checked and Dancing with the stars in the US also bans same sex couples on network orders allegedly but has had such a dance routine (or near dancing as they termed it!) in a non competitive part of the show and as a professional performance.
Craig Revel Horwood said in 2015 he expected a same sex couple in the 2015 or 2016 BBC series but it has not happened. So we will see if he was just out by a year. I think in some ways though it is down to the type of dances they do which are rather dependent on a male and female relationship because the dances are somewhat role cast and that would be more difficult to put across with two men or two women. It may be less prejudice and more dynamics of the show. |

Corrie is on next Thursday at 8.30 pm too - up against the second half of the first Who Do You Think You Are? episode - with Danny Dyer - which has got the cover story in this week's Radio Times and has featured in several press stories this week because of what he found out about his family.

The opening Danny Dyer episode has certainly had plenty of publicity and it has an EastEnders lead-in. although that doesn't really amount to very much these days. |

*Pens OpEd for the Guardian* As everyone keeps saying on here, SCD has a mainly older audience and generally they are less ready for that sort of change. Hell, I'm not ready either. . |

I don't think Corrie is usually shown on Thursdays whereas Thurs at 19:30 is one of the 'classic' EE times.
Even I know EE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30. Straight after TOTP or on Tuesdays... Holiday86/Telly Addict/Ever Decreasing Circles ...???

Yes, because Meet the Parents is just like Strictly...
As everyone keeps saying on here, SCD has a mainly older audience and generally they are less ready for that sort of change. Hell, I'm not ready either. . I just find it a bit of an odd request really- Same Sex 10 Dance does exist but it's usually female/female as not enough gents take up the sport and really and truly there''s nothing sexual about it despite how Strictly try to spin it. I also don't get why gay men would be uncomfortable dancing with women, I'm a gay male and have danced some ballroom with my female partner and many do.the same- It's a professional relationship and to be honest having seen nale same sex dancing it looks a bit odd in something like a waltz/tango. I just think it would be Strictly doing it for the sake of doing it rather than it adding anything to the show |

"the BBC shouldn't ever buy another series again just in case another channel might one day get it into its head to bid more at renewal" - I never said that or even implied it. I said if another terrestrial channel wants to out bid the BBC for content then they should let them have it rather than getting into a bidding war. For example I think they did the right thing with GBBO they made a sensible bid, probably in the full knowledge other broadcasters would probably bid more.
Your characterisation of the GBBO negotiation is simply wrong. BBC was completely blindsided. It had no reason whatsoever to believe that it was in competition with any other channel and, if C4 is to be believed, nor were they in fact. |

According to the DW forum on here the BBC are already planning the 2018 series without Moffatt and Capaldi. Chris Chibnall of Broadchurch is taking over. And the BBC want a new younger doctor to help sell dolls, apparently.
The story suggests that both the doctor and the companion might leave in the Christmas 2017 episode as the new companion only has a one year contract. All the companions have had single year contracts, by the way. It simply saves hassle on either side if they get a better offer for example. If Capaldi does leave (and I'm by no means suggesting that I would wish that) it would be frankly hornswoggling if the companion was to go too. That it has never happened before emphasises the importance of some anchor of continuity from one side of the regeneration to the other. |

To me that really begs the question why not schedule it as:
19.00 Emmerdale 19.30 Coronation Street 20.30 I'm A Celebrity And take advantage of EastEnders' absence? As I said before, I guess there'd be accusations thrown at them that were being overly competitive against a telethon but they're already fighting back slightly by having the live trial tonight instead of Sunday. As it is they'll lose viewers at 8pm and not get them back.

No may be about it. Same sex couples in Strictly would simply be doing it for the sake of doing it. DWTS has a freer format including team and tro dancers withing which there are plenty of occasions for at least part of the dance to involve same-sex partnerships so it would be wrong to say that it's banned per se. Both competitions are simply designed for contesting by traditional male-female partnerships in traditional dances. It is absurd to characterise this as prejudice and Craig Revel Horwood should really not be stirring this up unnecessarily. The very idea of prejudice in DWTS' case is laughable given that they've had openly gay competitors of both genders, plus transgender, and a host of disabled competitors including amputees, a little woman, and a profoundly deaf champion.
I agree that it is a male/female dance competition and simply including gay people on an equal footing with everyone else is the right approach. Changing the show just for them would disadvantage them against everyone else. As you say the programme has always been very inclusive and nobody could reasonably argue otherwise. Based on a few contestants they do not even restrict it to humans as there have been a number of donkeys. ![]() One of the gay contestants on the Australian version recently said they were happier dancing with a female partner because it was about the dance and not the partnership and for the dance to work alongside all the others doing it this was the best way. |

Yeah it's be awkward and clumsy; I'd imagine they'd go for two women for various reasons. EastEnders started making statements 30 years ago and even Corrie has followed suit. I doubt 16 yeas ago DFS had adverts of a black man and a white woman trying out beds together but it's old hat now. I know one thing for sure, 16 years ago DFS had a Sale on and it was ending soon...

They would stand out and likely not get fair judgement from the voting public for their dancing ability because of the different dynamics in that partnership compared with everyone else.

I think all those soap figures are disappointing for this time of the year. I was forced to watch Coronation St last night, and without wishing to upset anyone, I wouldn't think now is the time to be planning an extra episode.
The decline of the soaps has definitely accelerated in the last couple of years (Emmerdale's less so, to its credit) and they certainly don't stand above the crowd in the way they used to. |

I agree, I think all those figures look pretty limp. To link it back to another thread favourite, all of them were below both of last weekend's X Factor shows and one of those was against Planet Earth.
